Changes to Citizenship Process

  • In response to the discussion we've had lately about making Citizenship quicker and more convenient (and to lighten my workload), I have done some work this weekend to change the process for new nations to become a Citizen! I'm hoping that by being making the form itself less cumbersome and making it so more people can grant Citizenship, our new Citizens can engage the community and explore the forums instead of waiting to be approved and masked. :)

First, the Citizenship form itself has been simplified...the lengthy interests section has been merged into one question asking what interested them in joining the region and becoming a Citizen. I think that not only will this be quicker to answer, but that the answers will be a lot more helpful now that it isn't just a series of yes or no questions.

Next, the entire Riksråd now has the authority and ability to grant Citizenships, through the new tasks system that I've coded into user profiles (basically, I can easily add tasks that authorized groups can run on any user through their profile). While they aren't required to process Citizenships, those that want to will make the process faster so our prospective Citizens won't have to wait for me to be able to review their applications.

Finally, the nature of our security checks are changing...basic checks are ran as part of the Citizenize task, and I will run the more extensive ones when I get a chance after Citizenship has been granted. In two and a half years, very few people have been flagged in the security check, and I feel that the benefit of faster approvals vastly outweighs the risk of having to revoke a Citizenship after the fact due to a security check.

Combined this should make for a much better Citizenship application process, and I'm still open to ideas to make it even better. If you have any ideas, feel free to start a discussion on them and we'll go from there. :)

  • Looks like I was the first to accept a Citizen under this...I also found a bug which has been resolved!

So Defense was the first non-integration ministry to accept a citizen, and I was the first non-integration worker that was/is not the Monarch that is a Jarl, and that is the Jarl of Defense :P

  • One thing I don't like about removing the interests section is that many people might not be aware of all the things we have to offer, and that questions part was a good way to introduce those areas to new people.

Yeah, I like the interests section. We should keep it, I think. It makes the form less yes/no and more multidimensional, you know? :)

  • But it was such a long form, guys. Maybe we should do a better job of advertising stuff and showing users around once they're already here, rather than shoving all in their face in the citizenship form?

  • Right, especially considering that everyone who posts something in the interests section never ends up following up on said interest, namely politics and journalism.

  • Maybe keep the length away, but give an idea such as stating that we have Minecraft/Civ and give people an idea of what we offer around here.

But I do agree that we want to keep it brief, especially since, as Barnes mentioned, people who have expressed interest normally don't follow up on said interests anyways.

    *Clears throat*

Anyway, did the length of the form really increase people's hesitance to apply for citizenship?

  • We tell people what we offer in our recruitment message, in the welcome message when they join the region, and in a dispatch pinned on the region page...if people don't know what we offer by the time they've been through all that, I'm not sure the Citizenship form will help them anyways. I'd rather we focus on the reasons that they came to the region and became a Citizen than a list of things they may have just said yes to because it was on the list. Besides, perhaps the reason someone joined us wasn't on that list, in which case we wouldn't have got the best answer anyways.

  • wintermoot has a point. although one thing that may or may not be a problem is organization of the various topics? maybe keeping them up to date and deleting the old ones? I'm just saying if people find what they came here for easier it might help.

  • I do like the idea of retaining at least a single lonesome question about cultural aspects of the region and new member interests just so that we can point people in the right direction straight off the bat, but otherwise I think the changes made are all beneficial - especially making it so that more than just one person can mask new citizens :)
