  • Nope. But Fallout 3 was a fine game on its own.

  • But Fallout wasn't a game on its own at that point...it was one of the most innovative, character-driven game series of the 90s, and Bethesda bought the IP from a bankrupt Interplay and turned it into The Elder Scrolls: Fallout. They should have just developed their own game that would be 'fine on its own', but they took another game and changed almost everything about it, from the genre to the perspective to the emphasis on being a FPS.

The only silver lining is that the creators of Fallout 1 and 2 were eventually able to create Wasteland 2, which should have been Fallout 3.

  • Well, I can see how it upsets long-time fans, but the point remains that it was a pretty decent game, even if it was nothing like its original namesake.

Apparently Dragon Age: Origins was a spiritual successor to Baldur's Gate.

  • I just don't understand why you would buy a game's IP and then destroy everything that was great about it. I guess just to make some money off it...it's all companies really care about. >_>

I have Baldur's Gate from a GoG sale, but I've never played it...speaking of which, I'm thinking of picking up Vampire: The Masquerade and Arcanum from today's GoG sale. ^.^

  • It's not like they didn't turn it into a good game. It just didn't resonate with you personally. :P

The people who made the originals were probably hoping to make money off it too. People have to make a living somehow. Why not make money and make exceptional games?

I've been trying to find the time and the courage to play games as old as Fallout 1 & 2 and Baldur's Gate, but I don't even properly have time for Dragon Age: Inquisition at the moment. Vampire: The Masquerade and Arcanum are also firmly in that boat.

There are too many good games.

  • But it wasn't a Fallout game...that's the whole point. I wouldn't be so sure about them making much money, either...Interplay did have to declare bankruptcy and sell its IP to Bethesda, after all. :P

Ironic to this conversation, Arcanum and Vampire: The Masquerade are from many of the same people that worked on Fallout 1 and 2, circa early 2000s. You don't need much courage for Fallout 1 and 2 though. They may be older, but they're very easy to pick up and play...the most difficult part is making all the decisions you have to do in making your character. A lot of variety there. :P

  • Fallout 1 & 2 were outstanding! I've never played Fallout 3 due to my own various restrictions. But I wouldn't find an Elderscrolls style Fallout game very appealing.

  • I've played all of the fallout games, though I'm far from the biggest fan of them... I would say that 1, 2, & 3 are all excellent games in their own right but that they do appeal to different styles, which I don't think is a bad thing...

This guy knows the deal! :P

I did try Fallout 3 at one point, and ended up being very disappointed. The great thing about Fallout and Fallout 2 was that they were more RPG and less combat-oriented...you had a lot of character development (good or bad), a lot of colourful personalities, and a lot of quirky humour in the grit of the post-apocalypse world. Those were fun worlds to explore. Fallout 3...the characters and the world just seemed so dull, and it really came off as an Elder Scrolls game with guns. I don't like FPS games in general, and this was no exception, and it seemed like when they were developing the game everything else took a backseat to making it a FPS game.

It's not a bad game, although even standalone it wouldn't be my thing...but it's not a Fallout game, or it shouldn't be, and it's unfortunate that the IP fell out of the hands of the people that put it together to begin with.

  • Sometimes I just get tired of having to think about finances and prioritizing and what I need...sometimes I wish I could just splurge and by a bunch of stuff just because I want it...but that seems to be a long ways off...
