But Fallout wasn't a game on its own at that point...it was one of the most innovative, character-driven game series of the 90s, and Bethesda bought the IP from a bankrupt Interplay and turned it into The Elder Scrolls: Fallout. They should have just developed their own game that would be 'fine on its own', but they took another game and changed almost everything about it, from the genre to the perspective to the emphasis on being a FPS.
The only silver lining is that the creators of Fallout 1 and 2 were eventually able to create Wasteland 2, which should have been Fallout 3.
