Or maybe more people are just getting in touch with their LGBT+ side.
Either way, according to Gallup, more people in the US are identifying as lesbian, gay, or transgender than ever before: 5.6% of survey respondents, up from 4.5% in 2017, with the majority of those identifying as bisexual. Even more interesting though is that this number is much higher among people age 18 to 23, with almost 16% of people in that group identifying as LGBT and 11.5% of that group specifically identifying as bi.
It also showed that liberals are much more likely to identify as LGBT: 13% compared with only 2% of conservatives. Following along, 8.8% of Democrats identified as LGBT compared with only 1.7% of Republicans. Is this because LGBT people are more likely to be liberal, or because conservatives are more likely to be in the closet? I would be interested in a study that investigated the cause of that discrepancy. However, education didn't matter...about as many people who went to college identified as LGBT as people who didn't go to college, also interesting seeing how colleges tend to be viewed as liberal bastions.
Personally, I think this is exciting, cause I've always believed that bisexuality (and its many forms) were much more prevalent in people than it seemed, even 15 years ago when it was just a tiny portion, and I remember that opinion making a lot of people mad. Now a much larger portion of people are identifying as bi, and Gallup estimates that portion will only grow in the future. Having more people identify as LGBT will also translate to more support and a bigger voice against discrimination and for rights, and...who knows? Maybe someday it'll become as normal in society as heterosexuality.
