  • Hello everyone, and welcome to my campaign. Apologies for the lack of music this time, I feel it's better to get my point across now than to indulge my love of theatrics. Now, let's get down to business.

    1) Why are you running for this position?
I'm running for this position to complete the mandate I set for myself back in April, and revitalize the roleplay sector of Wintreath.

    2) What do you aim to accomplish as thane? As part of this, you must include at least one thing that you promise to do beyond the minimum listed duties of the position during your term. It should be measurable, so that it's black and white whether you fulfilled this mandate at the end of the term if you are elected.
I am to fulfill my April mandate. Which was:
    1. Expand the Academy for Roleplaying Things and Stuff (ARTS) to Flurry and even Blizzard levels.
    2. Create additional forum RPs, preferably a beginner RP, an intermediate RP, and an advanced RP, as well as reopening the Frostbite Tavern for additional RP opportunities. Although a beginner RP and an intermediate RP are a minimum.
    3. Expand the Wintrean RP Server to include more games and GMs/DMs.
    4. Add additional roles overseen by the Thane of Roleplay to help spread the work and promote various parts of the community due to how spread out the RP community is now becoming. (I tried to do this last term, but Ruguo and Wintermoot felt it would be better to do it when more people were RPing.)
    5. Create a RMB roleplay. (I am currently in the middle of this).

2a) If you are an incumbent running for re-election, did you fulfill your mandate from the June election? If not, why didn't you?
I did not, mostly because I had a lot of real life issues going on which led to me being less active.

    4) What qualifications or experience do you have in the area that you are running in?
I have been roleplaying for 3 years now, and have also been Thane of Roleplay for 4 terms. I currently have several Dungeons and Dragons campaigns running where I DM and play, I RP a bit on the website RPRepository, and I have recently gotten started in RP on World of Warcraft. I also have been running the ARTS program alongside Ruguo, where I currently serve as a mentor for two classes.

    4) How do you plan to have the time to fulfill the duties of the position until the next election in December?
I plan to eliminate all other distractions so the only things I have going on are my Wintrean RP duties and school.

    5) Are you currently a part of any other NationStates regional or organizational government? If so, please include those regions and positions.
    I am not

I welcome any further questions/comments/criticisms. If you have anything you want to know more about, don't hesitate to ask.

  • Hey there! With a few hours left for people to stand, it looks like you will probably win be default! But you should at least get one question. :P

Reading through what you want to accomplish, do you think it's an ambitious agenda? You mentioned that Ruguo and I thought adding additional roles should wait until more people are RPing, and now if anything fewer people are. Do you think there's a need for so many RPs spread out between the forums and Discord?

  • To be honest, I’m really not sure. The fact is that we need more people RPing, and that we don’t have enough people doing so. I’m trying to get that to change. Hopefully, by expanding more ARTS classes, and helping people learn how to be a GM, I can influence more people to participate and RP. I definitely think there was a need for a TTRPG server, because Discord can Do you things The form is cat. Hopefully that explains your questions. If you have any follow ups, don’t be afraid to ask!

  • I assume you mean "the forum can't" and not "the form is cat". :P

I suppose the question becomes why aren't people RPing when it is one of the top things people list they want to do when they become a Citizen? Are we not promoting them enough? Is it too confusing for people to get into? I know from my very limited experience in ARTS that RP is quite a time commitment, but from the pool of interested people it seems there should be more people involved.

I'm not even going to pretend to be a RP expert, but it seems to me you might be more successful having at most one forum RP and one Discord RP that you can give more TLC to, rather than a bunch of RPs that you have to divide your attention between. Then if things grow and there's enough unique people to justify a new RP, consider it at that point. That's just my advice, at least.

    Oops, I did mean that.

It's really a combination of things. First off, it is the time commitment involved. RP can be a very time-consuming venture, and I know that throws a lot of people off when they first get into it. TTRP sessions, such as for D&D can run up to 5 hours long, and I've had walkup RP scenes in World of Warcraft last for over 30 minutes. People RP usually because they are passionate about it, meaning they invest a lot of time into their projects.

Second, it's an issue of promotion. I'll be the first to admit that I don't check a lot of the citizenship forms, meaning I can't direct people when they are interested in RP. Wintreath isn't centered on RP, meaning that finding it without help from those who know it (e.g. Me and Silv), is very difficult.

Thirdly, there's the issue of new Gamemasters and Loremasters. We don't have a lot of experienced RPers, meaning it is up to those more experienced people to run games. This then runs into the issue of burnout, and GMs having to split their time between games. By starting the Gamemaster course for ARTs, we can help remedy this.

Fourthly, it's complicated. Roleplay is a dizzyingly wide field, and can intimidate a lot of people interested in it. ARTS was launched to combat this, but it is an uphill battle due to the number of mentors we can field at any given time (right now, two).

Finally, and this fault is on my shoulders, there hasn't been a lot of support for it. I've been less than helpful in my capacity as Thane, and I plan to fix this this term.

Writing this, I finally figured out that one of the big reasons we can't get a lot of people RPing, is that we need experienced people to run games, but we can't have experienced people running games, if nobody's RPing. I'm hoping this term I can bring in some new mentors and GM/LMs to help lighten the load a bit.

Is there any way to make it less time-consuming? Part of the reason World of Warcraft revolutionized the MMO genre is because they made it easier for casual players to play, in part by making it less time-consuming (with ideas like rested experience, simplified mechanics, etc). Is there room for innovation here?

In fairness, it's not entirely your job to scan through Citizenship apps and figure out who to reach out to for RP. In a perfect world, we would have established pathways depending on what people were interested in getting involved in...for example, a RP pathway might start out with asking them to sign up for ARTS, to fill out a survey about what kind of RP they're into, being included in a RP group that would then make sure they're comfortable and getting involved, etc. I feel like we tend to leave new Citizens hanging after we approve their app, but that's more an integration issue than a RP issue.

Yeah, this is really systemic of Wintreath in general, especially Cabinet-level positions. There's few people leading and generating the content that pushes the community forward, so there's a lot on each person's shoulders, which leads to burn-out. Again, it's not just a RP issue, but we definitely have to figure out how to get people more interested in leading aspects of the region (even a game/loremaster is a leader of their game).

Yeah, and speaking as someone who is a novice at RP, I can say stepping out there is intimidating too...you have all these passionate, experience roleplayers, and you're new and don't know what you're doing. There's a fear of fucking up and looking stupid/pissing off the passionate veterans. ARTS was helpful because you're grouped with people on your level...but thinking back, what brought our class to a halt was that nobody was willing to experiment and figure out how to do conversation with each other without guidance from Ruguo. I don't know about the others, but I was afraid of looking stupid. v_v

Well, apparently nobody thought they could do better than you this term, so you'll have a chance to rectify that. :P

Brain drain...especially relevant considering the people who have left in the last few months. We're not active in a lot of areas, including RP, so nobody gets experience, which means there's nobody to take over when the people that have been doing it need a break, or get burned out, or leave.

It's funny, three out of the five issues you've identified are really integration issues, but they impact virtually every area of Wintreath, as we're finding out here. In the absence of a Thane of Integration, we're all really going to have to get together and work on integration this term. We can't afford to let our group of "skilled" members and leaders decay any further.

It's entirely possible, but you then run into the risk of having an RP lose momentum, which is one of the worst things that could happen. Maybe having a "posting schedule" or a "number of posts/week" for each RP could help?

Agreed. I could definitely add that to my agenda as something people can point to to get newcomers started in RP.

I am in agreement with you on this. Hopefully the ARTS courses (especially the GM one) can help remedy this.

This is a big part of RP and is what's very intimidating about it, thus causing not a lot of people to want to try it. It's like theatre, you have to get out of your skin and into the head of your character, no matter how people might ridicule (and speaking from experience, the number of roleplayers who ridicule newer RPers is close to zero. Anyone who does so is an asshole).

Well, apparently nobody thought they could do better than you this term, so you'll have a chance to rectify that. :P
    :D Apparently

On the one hand, it's good to see that my problems are not confined to the RP sector, but on the other, that makes me sense that their is a disconnect between newcomers and members which has to be bridged in order to get people interested in what Wintreath has to offer. This is something the culture team can work towards as we fulfill our goals.
