Oh man, so much Chinese cuisine is "weird"...
First off, we got the stuff that's apparently strange to Westerners, but seems perfectly normal to me. This Gordon Ramsay video is a good intro:
Their reactions just seem so exaggerated, especially since all that food seems normal. (Except stinky tofu, I just don't particularly like that one. But chicken feet is a typical dinner appetizer or dim sum dish, duck tongue just tastes good, and fish eyeballs are one of the best parts of a steamed fish.)
Some more things:
Bird's nest soup (the swiftlets make their nests out of saliva)
Chicken's feet for dim sum
Cloud ear/wood ear/black fungus
And now I'm hungry...
Then we have the stuff that's weird even to me. Snakes are a fairly okay instance of this. There's other ones too though, such as that one time I accidentally ate some worms, then realized they weren't onions.
There's also some strange things from traditional Chinese herbal medicine. For example, there's this
cordyceps/caterpillar fungus that we sometimes make into a broth for soups. And apparently these parasites are effective against cancer (there's been multiple
peer-reviewed studies into this).
Best non-alcoholic drink?
