  • It has been suggested that we install World Edit on the server, which as I understand it would allow players to quickly update a lot of blocks at one time, among other things. Given that it would change how building large things is done on the server, and out of concern that it might "cheapen" the work that was done before the hard way, I wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on this suggestion.

  • I think in general the proposal/usage of WorldEdit would be for admins to have access to it in order to fix certain glitches and such. I can't see WorldEdit being a viable option for actual survival multiplayer play, for obvious reasons (wow, you just summoned a giant cube of diamonds, etc.).

    Edit: If you want to make building things easier, perhaps consider a builders' wand mod/plugin.

  • Yeah I don't think that adding a plugin like worldedit would be particularly good for anything as far as the survival server is concerned.  If we want a creative server we can maybe cordon off an area?  But not sure how that would work really.  That seems like it might be slightly more complicated...

  • One of the main reasons I'm for this is cause I like building big things and I'd like to build some of those for the server. Other than that, it is a very useful tool for moderation, ensuring that there's a good way to roll back chunks of the server as compared to having to fully reload the entirety of it and so on.

    I don't think it'd change the nature of builds on the server but I do understand that position.

  • I've only used Builders' Wands in the Extra Utilities 2 mod, which is normal client+server side mod, so that wouldn't work.

    There's this Spigot plugin though I've never worked with it before, so I can't speak for how good/bad it is. And of course, adding something like this would definitely need to be discussed.

    I don't see this and WorldEdit as alternatives to each other. WorldEdit has admin-level use cases on survival servers, and could be used, for instance, to fix the broken pre-1.13 water when it mixes with post-1.13 water, which I think is something trader mentioned.

    I don't think it'd change the nature of builds on the server but I do understand that position.
    I would say that it would fundamentally change the nature of resource acquisition. Finding, gathering, and farming any blocks would become obsolete when you can just summon them into existence.

    That's not something I had really thought about. From my perspective, I wanted to build public structures for the server, stuff that serves a function to support spawn.

    Wands aren't really a replacement for World Edit sadly, cause world edit does a lot of different stuff that works together fairly seamlessly. Neither would address the resource issue. Oh and I can see issues with it being used maliciously if it was provided to everyone.

    Maybe a fair compromise is proposing a build that uses WE in a thread or discussion post and see if people are into it, after which the person is provided temp access to WorldEdit? Cause the reason I would like to see it on the server is cause I'd love to make some cool places that people could visit around spawn (and maybe to help make the godforsaken tunnels for the subway).

    What does everyone feel about this?

    If it's a good wand mod, then it should consume resources from the player's inventory when in survival mode.

    I suppose I might be okay with admins using WorldEdit on public projects, though I would still prefer that such things be done using survival.

  • The Subway and the Ender Ender (newly renovated) are examples. There's also that wheat farm at spawn. In my mind, it would be builds for athletes to enjoy, explore or use. My base is one of those places for the most part; I like the adventure I've created in trying to find all the secrets.

    It'd be fun to build something near spawn like that with wands or WE, cause it's pretty difficult to make some of the things we could make with WE fairly easily.

    If there's some way to make WE or another mod use items in your inventory, I'd be super down to have that on the server! There are mods (or were, I haven't looked at MC modding in years so these mods may be dead) that allowed you to essentially do that. It may exist as a plugin.

    Athletes?

    In addition to farms, things like roads, the spawn house, etc. would all be things I'd consider to be communal/public works. I'd probably also consider the hiking trails I built, but I haven't publicized those in years now.
