    Yes, to my knowledge basically all the terrain would appear as though it were generated with the current version's terrain generation. So any ungenerated terrain would be as it appears on Amidst, but old terrain may differ.

  • You know, Worldpainter can load existing terrain AND predict ungenerated terrain.
    Worldpainter is primarily for creating your own terrain and actually generating it on the world files, which isn't really necessary in this case. I'm not sure how the performance is for large-scale prediction of ungenerated terrain?

    Wintermoot said he doesn't want something where he needs to download the world file, as it is very large. So I've ignored anything that requires loading existing terrain.

    EDIT: I originally said Amidst could also load existing terrain, I thought that was true but I think I was mistaken. It can load the level.dat info but not existing world data, I think.

  • Before updating to 1.15, we would probably need to replace some plugins...PermissionsEx to LuckPerms and Lockette Pro to BlockLocker. Then we would do the upgrade, then we would start looking at new spawn points.

    1.15.1 recently came out and seems to have mostly been bug fixes. Does anyone know how it seems to be doing on MP servers?

    Checking the Spigot forums, it looks to be quite good and stable, at least in comparison to 1.14.

    Edit: in terms of performance, looks to be

    Ideally, if we are updating to 1.15, I think we should be looking for a new spawn after the update so that we get all new terrain generation from the previous two updates.

    Also my two cents regarding resetting the server and starting from scratch. I do understand that the server has been around for 6+ years and that people have invested a ton of time into their builds thus far. Where this leaves new players though is having to play catch up or relying on the generosity of others for materials. I have trouble giving stuff away or feeling useful because everyone already has everything they will ever need. If you wanted to do a complete reset it would provide a fresh, blank canvas for every player, and make for a more cooperative atmosphere. You could also create a backup file so that anyone who wants to keep the work that they've already done would be able to do so.

  • Hey @Aersoldorf! Since this topic, @trader has taken over hosting and maintenance of the Minecraft server. I believe he's stated that he will upgrade when he has a chance, so it mostly depends on his schedule.

    I would hate to lose all that public history. I think there's something to be said for having a long history of buildings and milestones that reflects our past, especially those that were made by people who aren't with us anymore. I'm not sure a reset is a permanent solution, either...I'm reminded of how once in awhile a region will have the idea to whip away their government and laws and start fresh, with the idea that everything has been done and it'll give people something to do. But the opposite usually happens, because people wonder what's the point if it's going to be eventually wiped?

    I think you do have valid points though, and I wonder if there are alternative solutions...maybe moving spawn to a newer area, or having some kind of item decay or system that makes it harder to hoard items long-term. Is it possible to make some items rarer or harder to collect? Are there gold sinks of a sort we could add to encourage people to use their items instead of hoarding them?

  • I'm open to moving spawn very far out, as long as there is a warp back to the old spawn. Or the reverse (an easy warp to new lands would probably go a long way to helping new players get out of the old areas).

    I think any sort of item decay would, in addition to being very hard to implement well, also run into the same issue of erasing public history. People keep items with the understanding that they're permanent and will continue to be part of the Wintreath historical record. It's a monument to what was achieved and done.

    In the long term it doesn't really take very long to reach the Minecraft endgame, and I think that fact evens things out. Aersoldorf has only been around for about a month, for instance, and is probably already richer and better-equipped than me, someone who's been on the server for almost 7 years now.

    I also do feel like the Wintreath culture is already very cooperative and people are open to sharing. In some communities that generosity might lead newer players to owe debt to older players, but here I think it is just kindness which bolsters the cooperativeness of the community.

    Resetting the server isn't something that I'm in favour of, as Tau and Moot have noted, it wipes away a lot of history. I do have a bit of a personal stake in keeping the server the way it is because my base, and the bases of others, mean a lot to me. Wiping it away would be a massive shame, and it would have the effect of making me not want to play, Wintreath's MC is pretty much the only place I play MC these days because of its history. I would encourage you to visit and explore the bases of others, my base is open to the public, and I believe Pond's base is as well, both are pretty epic, and would be lost. An alternative I've considered is the Multiverse plugin, but with the server's size it's daunting to imagine having to manage two worlds worth of storage lol.


    I'll try updating the server soon, we were waiting on a few different things to get themselves sorted so serverside we wouldn't have issues, now it's just a matter of doing all the things. The biggest bottleneck is backing up the server, which is about 33gb takes about 3 hours iirc, which holds up the storage drives that I use for work. I am open to sharing the world with whoever would like it, but figuring out a solution for sharing it is... challenging.

    I'll definitely make a warp out to somewhere between 10k to 50k from spawn so people can get to new chunks, and modify perms so you guys can use /warp. Storage is basically the biggest concern for Wintreath, and trimming out chunks is a bit of a time intensive process, so it's not easy for me to do. As for moving spawn, it's definitely plausible, but we can consider moving that after I implement the warp so you guys get the chance to see if that works well enough for you guys. I'll probably world edit in a rail line from spawn to the new area for whoever might need it.

  • Ooh I am pro adding a few /warps to the server.  I think that we've definitely been lacking that for quite some time (in fact, the /spawn and /home being all that is available is like 95% of the reason I first built my castle at spawn like.... a LONG time ago).

    Moving a spawn out like 50k blocks could be quite interesting too though for new folks.  Definitely would present an opportunity to develop a new spawn, incorporate modern building techniques, redstone, etc.  I don't know lots of possibilities.

    On another note, I hopefully can return to the server soon, Minecraft has updated so much that things are daunting but I'm trying to get back into it haha

  • Hey @Aersoldorf! Since this topic, @trader has taken over hosting and maintenance of the Minecraft server. I believe he's stated that he will upgrade when he has a chance, so it mostly depends on his schedule.

    I would hate to lose all that public history. I think there's something to be said for having a long history of buildings and milestones that reflects our past, especially those that were made by people who aren't with us anymore. I'm not sure a reset is a permanent solution, either...I'm reminded of how once in awhile a region will have the idea to whip away their government and laws and start fresh, with the idea that everything has been done and it'll give people something to do. But the opposite usually happens, because people wonder what's the point if it's going to be eventually wiped?

    I think you do have valid points though, and I wonder if there are alternative solutions...maybe moving spawn to a newer area, or having some kind of item decay or system that makes it harder to hoard items long-term. Is it possible to make some items rarer or harder to collect? Are there gold sinks of a sort we could add to encourage people to use their items instead of hoarding them?
    I'm a hoarder myself, so I don't have any issue with people hanging on to stuff forever if they choose. I also try to be as helpful to the community as I can and that's what I meant by feeling a bit useless. Everyone already has everything that they need, or nearly so, so nobody really needs my assistance. The problem with moving spawn a long way away is that while, yes, it does open up chunks that are generated using the latest versions of MC, it also makes the file size much larger which means more money for storage. If you ever need help with paying to maintain this server please let me know, I would be willing to help foot the bill in order to have a server that I enjoy playing on continue rather than have it simply disappear the way my last server did. I'm probably going to see if my youngest daughter wants to join the server if that's possible, she doesn't play NationStates but she's the reason I started playing Minecraft to begin with.

    There are a few things that I would love to see added to the server that were on the server that I used to play on. First was the ability to actually pick up spawners that we found in the world. Second, we were able to change those spawners to a different type for a price - ie we could pick up a cave spider spawner in a mineshaft and change it to an iron golem spawner for a fee. This enabled us to build our item farms near our base without the need to travel all over the map to reach different grinders. There's also a plugin that I would really love to see us use. It's called MCMMO. It adds a leveling system for different skills used in the game (mining, woodcutting, brewing, etc). You gain new abilities as you increase your rank in different skills.

    I don't dislike anything about the server as it currently is, I just think that these additions would make it more fun. Thoughts?

    Ultimately, adding new server mods is up to trader, but I'm curious...with MCMMO, what new abilities do you get when you increase your rank? Is it a case where it adds things that aren't in the game now, or is it a case where it makes it initially harder to do things and you work your way to them being as easy as they are now?

    I personally think it would be great if your daughter wanted to join. I always love when people bring their friends and family to any part of Wintreath...it makes me feel like we're doing something right as a community. :D

  • To add in my two cents, I will probably lose interest if the server is completely reset. I am in favor of a secondary spawn, but if my stuff were to be wiped, even though half of it will never be completed, that would be something my brain wouldn't deal with well and would likely give up on trying again, much as I did with skyblock back in the day. 

    I am all for adding in new mods, I keep asking for the lasso mod which allows you to pick up mobs and store them in the lasso to place elsewhere later, kinda like fish in a bucket for everything. I don't know how I personally feel about MCMMO, it seems a bit complex and well, personally, I get easily frustrated by that kind of leveling system. I'm a bit of a complainer when it comes to adding in extra things I guess. I never even liked the leveling part of skyrim, I always cheated it to play it more like I was playing a set dnd character instead of a character that actually progresses naturally after the first playthrough.
