  • As you enter the tuberous temple, you see your panel of judges before you. High-ranking members of the Church of the Holy Spud, which you must impress with your starchy dishes and honor the holy food.

Besides you are eight fellow cooks and chefs. You must work together to make these dishes and provide suitable offerings to the Tuber. But are all of them as committed to the faith as you are?

    The Roles

    The Faithful Potatoeists
(vanilla name: The Resistance/Knights of Arthur)
    Head Chef
Always vigilant, the Head Inquisitor Chef has investigated and, with the Potatoe's guidance, knows who the heretics are, except for the Compromised Bishop (Mordred).
    (vanilla name: Merlin)
    Sous Chef
The Sous Chef knows who the Head Chef (Merlin) and the Tomatoeist Inquisitor (Morgana) are, but not which is which.
    (vanilla name: Percival)
    Line Cooks
    Ordinary faithful Potatoeist cooks.

    The Heretical Tomatoeists
(vanilla name: The Spies/Minions of Mordred)
    Tomatoeist Inquisitor
This Inquisitor Chef confuses the Sous Chef (Percival) by also appearing to them as the Head Chef. They are in contact with the Compromised Bishop (Mordred).
    (vanilla name: Morgana)
    Compromised Bishop
This high-ranking Potatoeist clergy and chef appears faithful to the Head Chef (Merlin), but is in reality a dangerous heretic. They are in contact with the Tomatoeist Inquisitor (Morgana).
    (vanilla name: Mordred)
    Closet Tomatoeist
This cook is secretly a heretic. They are not in contact with their fellow Tomatoeists.
    (vanilla name: Oberon)
    The Rules/How to Play

    1. The leader position will rotate in the order of players listed below.

    2. The leader nominates players for the mission. The number of players nominated are, for each mission:
    Mission 1: 3
    Mission 2: 4
    Mission 3: 4
    Mission 4: 5*
    Mission 5: 5

    3. Following this nomination (and some discussion), each player must Vote: Aye or Vote: Nay on the mission. (Please bold these votes.) This nomination succeeds if a majority of players vote Aye.

    4. If the nomination vote fails, the leader position passes onto the next player, who will likewise nominate players for the mission as described above. If the nomination vote fails five times in a row, then the Tomatoeists win.

    5. If the nomination vote succeeds, each player in the mission must PM me whether they seek to Pass or Fail the mission.

    6. If anyone votes to Fail, then the mission fails. If nobody votes to Fail, then the mission succeeds.
*Except in Mission 4, which requires at least 2 Fail votes to fail the mission.

    7. If at least three missions fail, then the Tomatoeists win. If at least three missions succeed, then the Tomatoeists try to guess who the Head Chef (Merlin) is. If they are correct, then the Tomatoeists win; otherwise, the Potatoeists win.

    8. Try to keep all phases under 1 day. If this does not work I may look into ways of motivating a faster pace of play.

    9. The winners will win 15 Potatokens, split amongst themselves. This means 5 Potatokens each for the Tomatoeists and 3 Potatokens each for the Potatoeists if the respective team wins.

    List of Players/Leader Order:
    1. @Marzipan
    2. @Red Mones (resigned from the game)
    3. @Gabrielle
    4. @BraveSirRobin
    5. @North
    6. @Gerrick
    7. @A self deprecating Kane

  • Apologies for the delay; I am sick and somewhat busy.

As mentioned above, @Marzipan will be the nominating a team to complete the first culinary task of this endeavor.

  • I must again protest the demarcation of Tomatoists as 'heretical', we merely have differences in religious doctrine and orthodoxy. Truly dangerous heretics would be Sweet Potatoeists, or Quayle forbid, Yammers.

Alright, my religiously necessary token defense of Tomatoism done with, let's win this sucker and make Tomatoist paste.
    Tau, a few clarifying questions:
    1) Among the Minions, are there 1 of each role, and that's it, or is there a generic Minion among them, since IIRC by Avalon rules, Oberon doesn't technically count as a Minion (and so also doesn't appear to Merlin). This is an important clarification, since by the 9-player setup, it should be 6 Loyalists (one of which is Merlin, one of which is Percival), 3 Minions (one of which is Mordred/Morgana/Oberon).
    2) I note that the Assassin is not listed as a role. Does this mean that the Tomatoists as a collective decide who the Head Chef is?
    3) Are PM chains in use, or are those banned? I ask because in Generic Avalon, there's no 'night phases' where people can gesticulate to each other and coordinate - which creates the possibility of, perhaps, two Tomatoists being on the same team, and creating a situation where, for fear of them both fail-voting and revealing themselves such that they are forever frozen out, neither fail-vote and the mission passes.

Now for some Experienced Player Speak. While there is literally no reason to no-vote a team on the first mission (there's just no information to work with), there's also no necessary reason to trust the people who push it through. Remember - the fact that there's only 3 of them means that if there's 1, or even by a stroke of luck two fail-votes on the mission, we can basically freeze that whole group out of the game forever and win by default. Therefore, a passed Mission 1 is not definitive proof of someone's innocence - merely a good indicator. In the Mafiauniverse lingo we've all picked up from Laurentus: it's NAI.
I will also note that the reason Mission 4 needs two fails is because the usual way it goes is Day 1 passes, Days 2 and 3 fail, Day 4 passes, and everything really just comes down to Day 5. If we do pass Day 2 or 3, then...it's pretty much in the bag, really. So don't feel disheartened if we fail Day 2 and/or 3; that's just usually how the game goes.
Lastly, thank god there's no lynching in this game. Finally, I'll survive a game till the end!

My understanding is that while Oberon is technically not a "Minion of Mordred" (which determines who knows each other), they are technically Evil, which is how the 6:3 ratio is determined. There are no generic Minions.
    2) I note that the Assassin is not listed as a role. Does this mean that the Tomatoists as a collective decide who the Head Chef is?
Yes. (It seemed to work when I played that way in person, and also allows me to insert Mordred, Morgana, and Oberon.)
    3) Are PM chains in use, or are those banned? Yes, I highly enjoy that case/scenario but decided that because there is no way for me to necessarily prevent the communication from happening, I might as well allow it to happen in a sanctioned manner. (Much as with seer armies and wolf daytime communication in forum Werewolf.) This does skew the game more in favor of the Tomatoeists, though I'm not sure how this roleset is skewed in the first place anyway (for the new Wintrean meta, at least). And that is also why I decided to add Oberon in, to handicap the Tomatoeists a bit and also let this same situation still be possible.

  • Also, if anyone needs a TL;DR or possibly less technical/flavorful rewording of the roles/rules:

Merlin (Head Chef): knows who the bad guys are
Mordred (Compromised Bishop): appears good to Merlin, thus confusing Merlin
Percival (Sous Chef): knows who Merlin is
Morgana (Tomatoeist Inquisitor): also appears as Merlin to Percival, thus confusing Percival
Oberon (Closet Tomatoeist): doesn't know who the other bad guys are, and the other bad guys don't know who Oberon is, thus confusing the bad guys

Good guys want to pass 3 missions. Bad guys want to fail 3 missions or discover who Merlin is. Good guys want Merlin to stay hidden.

Leader nominates players to go on mission, players vote on nomination. Players who go on mission vote to pass or fail mission, mission fails if anyone fails the mission (except in mission 4 when it's 2 fails to fail).

It sounds like Marzipan picks a team and then we all vote whether to keep it or pick another one.  I am not completely sure though since I had never even heard of these games before taulover made this one.

The games do indeed have a rather similar structure, probably because Secret Hitler. was largely inspired by Resistance/Avalon I believe.

So when do we decide who goes on the first mission?

  • Oh are we not doing secret aye/nay votes?
I mean I guess they're not secret secret in Avalon because you see them once everyone has voted, but the point of having them initially secret is so you can't influence anyone (e.g. Perceval copying Merlin, the Minions copying each other).
But I guess that would be hard to coordinate. Sacrifices must!

Aye! And a reminder/observation that there's really no reason to vote no on this, because again, no information.
