I think it's a bit crazy how long the campaign season has gotten over the last decade in the US. Like, 22 months and we're getting people who want to run? That seems a tad absurd to me. In Canada our election season was like 2-3 months? or so. I don't really see the need for a campaign season to be as long as it is. Maybe putting in some of the work in the backend but public stuff? Less so. I mean, it's 2 years worth of campaigning, that's a lot of time to dedicate your primary focus away from your constituents and point it towards a race that doesn't even start properly for at least another year.

Well, the 2020 campaign season arguably started in January 2017, when Donald Trump filed as a candidate with the FEC for the 2020 election two days after his inauguration, and then began holding rallies immediately the next month...

Wait what.  I wasn't expecting my state's governor to jump into the race.

Yeah, he's standing for the nomination. Hardly surprising, he's been making moves like that since taking the chair of the Democratic Governors organization. His main plank seems to be that he is the candidate who is most serious on environmental issues.

Well, he needs to stand for something and since Reparations for Slavery seems to be taken by other candidates the environment is a good an issue as any.

It also appears that John Hickenlooper, governor of Colorado, is also going to stand for the nomination, an announcement is going to be had in March most likely.

I'm pretty sure the major candidates of the race have already been decided by this point, though, and everyone else is just kind of crowding the field. It's been Bernie v Kamala since day one, really. I project that it's going to be largely a two-way primary between those two, with Elizabeth Warren coming behind at a relatively distant third, and Tulsi Gabbard in fourth. I can't say anything about the order of the remaining candidates, but I feel they have absolutely zero chance.

And frankly I'm not even happy that Amy Klobuchar is running. I'd much rather have her stay Senator like I voted her to be. I think she just wanted to throw her hat in the ring just to say that she was running, and to potentially boost her publicity for a reelection campaign in 2024.

Well, I think more are to come. Beto O'Rourke will likely stand and so will Biden, at least, they are making moves in that direction. Maybe a few more people will stand as well like Michael Bennet and the like.

The time for Beto to run was right after the 2018 senatorial election when he was still fresh in everyone's mind. Beto and Biden, like the rest of the candidate pool, appear to have fallen by the wayside by now.

Perhaps, but I think they will stand none-the-less. At least, that's what appears to be the case.

I think the reason why the electoral season has started and will be so long is because many of the candidates running (especially on the Democratic side) are very unpopular and unknown out of their home state. They have to build a base and tell the people how they represent the ideals of their party and what unique thing they want to bring to the table. People like President Trump who is fairly popular, though he has already announced his campaign for reelection, do not need to start his campaign off until later this year. After all, how many people actually knew about the Gov. of Washington, Jay Inslee, until he announced his campaign...

I like Inslee's platform. I know little about the man himself.

I can't really find anything on his platform besides environmental protection. Would be interested in reading more if you have any links.

Why "besides" the environment? That is a huge global issue, and he so far seems to be the only one who is placing any emphasis on it. That's the main reason he came to my attention.
