  • Aboard the H.M.S Rainix, you trudge your way down hallways and staircases, heaving the heavy suitcase behind you. As you step deeper inside it gets colder and chills your skin. The sun is a memory blocked by several hundred feet of cruise ship. With every step your annoyance grows. You should’ve ignored that old man. “Take it with you, it’ll come in handy!” Yeah, right, because a giant metal suitcase double your size is useful. You came on this boat mostly empty handed for a reason! You finally reach your room, 705, and elbow it open.

It’s an ordinary cabin. Your gaze zeroes onto the soft, warm, and altogether inviting looking double bed. With a shrug of your shoulders you drop your backpack onto the floor, then lug the suitcase onto the desk opposite the bed.

Whatever’s in the suitcase? Who cares. You can look at it in the morning. You already spent who knows how long lugging the thing behind you, and your arms hurt, and it hit your calves and your backpack several times on the stairs. You can deal with it tomorrow.

That decided, you throw yourself onto your bed and try to sleep.

    ===

You aren’t sure what time it is when you wake up. It's black and cold. You turned the lamp on the bedside table off before you slept. But you're alert and awake immediately, jolted from irritated sleepiness to heart pounding alarm near seconds after you open your eyes. In spite of the thick, inky black, you are perfectly aware what sound disturbed you from your slumber.

    You can hear water.

Specifically, water pouring onto the carpeted floor, drumming with frantic speed.

What would you like to do?

(Welcome to the second Wintreath Escape Room, where everyone is welcome to hop in and out however they like. The goal of the game is to direct “you” into escaping the room. How? Puzzles! You solve puzzles. You do that by examining your surroundings, poking things, demanding me to write more detailed descriptions, and so on like an old timey text adventure game. Since this is the second run of this game I've learnt a little more about, well, running games, but I'm a flawed person so feel free to ask for clarification or suggest ways to make this run smoother).

    How To Play and Guidelines
    How to Play:
    - At the start of the game, each player can post up to three “command inputs.” Once a person has posted three inputs, additional inputs by that person will be ignored until the next turn. If you would like to change your input, please strike through what you are replacing.
    - After 24 hours, I will type up the various inputs being played out, and the results of them.
    - This post begins the next turn. With that, players can post new inputs. This again has a limit of three.
    - This sequence will continue until you successfully escape the room.

    General Guidelines:
    - Inputs can range from examining something, checking your immediate senses (smell, sight, hearing), checking inventory, using an item, flipping a switch, inputting a password, and so on. Since I am not a computer (beep boop) I’m willing to allow sillier inputs as well. Be creative! Go wild!
    - In the previous game when people inputted commands such as, “>type random codes,” I used a random number/word generator. This is no longer the case. Asking “you” to type in random codes will now get you the response: “you type in random codes.”
    - Please be realistic when judging what counts as one input. I will be warning people if they’ve made an overlong input so they can change it before the deadline.
    - Inputs are resolved in the order they are received. Yes, this means you can pull off a long series of inputs if you work together.
    - In the event I’m having trouble understanding what an input means, I will ask for clarification and will not resolve the input until the poster clarifies.
    - Normally, these inputs are not designed for voting on what actions will be taken. Rather, all will be resolved. The only exception is if there are mutually contradictory inputs (such as “let the cat die” and “save the cat.” You can't save a dead cat). In that case, depending on how severe the contradiction is, I will either use the first one posted or pause the game so people may vote on which they want to do. (N: I don't think this'll be used in this game, but I'm future proofing and making sure if I do need this rule, adding it won't be a massive spoiler).
    - Please do not put inputs in bold. I use that. Bold is moine.

(Updates will be around 7PM NZT, or 3AM EST if my time converter is correct).

(One last thing. In this room, there is one puzzle whose solution hides somewhere else in Wintreath. I'll let you know when you're looking at it. Don't worry, it's rather transparent on where you need to go. Now, I think that's everything I need to say? If anyone spots any holes I'll try to patch them up. Speaking of holes, you all really should figure out where that water is coming from. Good luck!)

  • (... Okay, I'm going to announce this here instead of the post in the next few hours.

@Kane lives, @taulover, and @El Fiji Grande, I'm going to allow interactions with multiple objects in this opening turn, but keep in mind that:

Kane Lives 2: Test the light switch and lamps.
// This would be three (3) object interactions.

    taulover 2: Inspect the paintings.
// This would be two (2) object interactions.

El Fiji Grande 1: Look through the bedside drawers.
// And this would be four (4) object interactions.

Strictly speaking I should have notified you all to change them, but I'm thinking we all want to sink our teeth into the actual puzzles before we start making you need to choose what to do. Better to give you all a canvas to work with before you need to choose your battles. See you all in a bit over an hour!)

  • Turn 1

Kane Lives 1: Get out of the bed.
You shove and kick your sheets away and fumble to the edge of the bed. The second your foot touches the ground you can feel dampness, wetness, that’s gross. You whip your feet back onto the bed and stay crouched in the dark like a creepy garden gnome. The smell of wet carpet fills your senses. Until you know what you’re getting into, maybe you should stay where it’s relatively dry.

Kane Lives 2: Test the light switch and lamps.
The room’s lightswitch is across the room, but there are two lamps to your left and right. Since the water’s coming from your left when sat on the bed, you feel your way to the other side of the bed and find the lamp.

You have got to be joking. Who puts faulty lamps in a faulty room!

    Click, click.

    Click, click.

    Click-- clang!

Well, that’s not good. It seems like the lamp away from the water came apart in your hand. You frantically toss the pieces on the bed and crawl your way back to the left lamp. Hopefully you aren’t about to electrocute yourself…!

    You turn on the lamp.

The first thing you notice is the gaping hole in the wall.

It’s about head height, dropping water from its mouth at a steady rate. On the floor is a painting of, what, a sewer? The water pours down its glass front, a steadily growing stain of water spreading all over the carpet, all the way to the desk at the far end of the room. The edges are spreading rapidly and the spot right under the painting is thick with water. So, not about to drown, but still something to worry about.

Kane Lives 3: Try to find the source of the flooding.
    Yup, yup you found that.

It’s about the size of a tennis ball. The edges of the hole are made of metal, so, it’s there by design? Who designs a cruise ship to have water holes in the walls? Okay, if it’s there by design maybe there’s a design to switch if off. But, you can’t see anything, not here and now. Maybe a stop-gap will do? It’ll buy you time, at least.

Gerrick 1: Scream as loud as possible.
    “EEEEYYAAAAAUUUUUUGHHHHHH!!!!”

    ….

    “AHHHHHH!”

    ….

Your throat hurts. Nothing else appears to happen.

Gerrick 2: Try to open the door.
You dance around the growing pool of water and head for the front door. It’s down a short hallway, with what you assume is a bathroom door leading off to one side. You grab the handle. It doesn’t move. Your second, third, fourth, and fifth attempts also provide no results.

Gerrick 3: Try to open the suitcase.
You left that on the cabin’s desk. It’s big, made of metal, and cold to the touch. You run your hands along the surface, trying to find a latch or something. There’s a seam running along its horizontal axis, and what look like removable panels. Except, you can’t seem to get them op--

Okay, that happened. You touched one panel and it abruptly drew back, revealing a multicoloured series of buttons. Or lights. Both? Four in all, with a diamond layout, and coloured green, red, yellow, and blue. There’s a silver button in the middle.

That old guy has a strange sense of humour.

    taulover 1: Open the backpack.
Your backpack is on a small, round table, just in front of the corridor. It’s sat on top of the cabin’s phone. Let’s see. There’s your clothes and… where’s your wallet? And your keys, and everything else you packed? You rummage around. The drumming of the water against the painting is loud and uncomfortable, and you drop the clothes onto the small table. There’s nothing, nothing at all.

Your hands brush against something that isn’t fabric. It crinkles under your touch. You pull it out, and it’s a piece of paper, which you hold up to the light.

    Quote
    Welcome, stranger, to the game
Be wary and watchful of our domain
Keen eyes and ears you must possess
    Or find yourself trapped, endless
The gift we gave to guide your hand
Is not the full path to leave this land
Many clues lie in our halls
    Begin anywhere upon our walls
Though, if needed, hints you will find
Just in case you've become blind
Call it Simon, rotate twice if you wish
And play a game of schoolyard kids
Then connect the gift to screen and wire
And bonus rounds you will acquire
From there by fives you'll gain a guide
    But only by each solver

What’s that supposed to mean? You shrug your backpack on and load it with your clothes again. There’s plenty of room inside it now that all your things are gone.

You have acquired one (1) backpack, an assortment of clothes, and one (1) note.

    taulover 2: Inspect the paintings.
One of them is under the hole in the wall, so you pull it out from the stream of water. As you saw before, it’s a picture of a sewer of all things. Water particles stick to the glass. You turn the painting over and there’s something written on the back. “0817.” What does that mean?

The other painting, on the opposite side of the room, seems to be of some gladiators fighting in a colosseum. You take it off the wall and check its back. Nothing.

But when you look at the wall, there’s something else built into it. It’s just like the hole in the wall opposite. The metal is flush with the wall. It’s like an old rotary telephone, minus the actual telephone part.

taulover 3: Turn on the television.
You find the remote on the desk beside the suitcase. The TV turns on easy enough. You flip through a few channels, but all it gives is white noise.

El Fiji Grande 1: Look through the bedside drawers.
You leave the TV on for now and head for the bedside drawers. You start at the one away from the flood of water, to the left side of the bed.

The top drawer refuses to open, but it has a tiny keyboard pressed onto its face. With some experimentation, you figure it wants a password six letters long. Beside the tiny keyboard you can make out scratch marks. It looks like someone took a knife to it.

Thankfully the drawer below that is unlocked. You find two items. First, what looks like a small tile.

    Quote

    Second, a slightly crumpled note.

    Quote
Arnold: “I heard Betty get hit with an axe. That means Charles is a killer.”
Betty: “I’m surrounded by killers. Both of them could reach me.”
Charles: “I only heard one gunshot. One of the girls is a killer.”
Donna: “One person next to me is a killer, the other is dead.”
Egbert: “The axe only swung once. Fabio was killed with the knife.”
Fabio: “Two of the living’s names rhyme with someone dead.”
Gelbert: “I was shot. Donna was killed with the axe.”

Moving to the drawers partially obscured by water, the top box contains a tissue box, which you carefully maneuver around the stream of water. It doesn’t feel like tissues are in it.

The lower drawer is locked. Its face has two red LED lights on it, as well as another tiny keyboard just like its neighbour on the other side of the bed. With experimentation, you figure out that this one wants a password five letters long.

You have aquired one (1) tile, one (1) note, and one (1) tissue(?) box.

El Fiji Grande 2: Examine the suitcase.
The lights on the suitcase don’t appear to be doing anything. It’s made of metal, and you can attest to how heavy it is. The wheels were its only redeeming quality. The other panels don’t respond to your touch like the one that hid the lights… buttons… whichever.

El Fiji Grande 3: Use the blankets and bedcushions to try to buy time by slowing down the process of water entering the room.
You scrunch up a pillow as small as it can go. It can’t hurt to try.

You throw it and yourself into plugging the hole. For several seconds you battle the water pressure, as faint as it might be.

    Bzzt.

The pressure dies. You wait for several seconds, pushing a second pillow into the hole for good measure, and withdraw your hand. Eyeing it, it looks like the pillow’s plugged the hole. Funny. It’s not even dripping.

(All the images of text are provided by https://fontmeme.com/handwriting-fonts/, one of the coolest sites I have found.)
(Just a note: In the image provided, the water came from the painting on the right side of the screen, and the lamp that does not work is the one of the left side. Narrative “you” called them left and right, respectively, at the start due to being sat on the bed. Good luck!)

    - In the previous game when people inputted commands such as, “>type random codes,” I used a random number/word generator. This is no longer the case. Asking “you” to type in random codes will now get you the response: “you type in random codes.”

(Sure you want to do that? Just double checking. In this case you'll be getting some information anyway, I just want to double check you know about this).

Yup I am sure about that.

  • Hmm it took me a while to decipher that cursive script. It's odd to think that this sort of writing used to be the norm...

Ok so the knife mark message is at least partially in Māori (ana te tangata at least)

    "axe and knife hits neighbor"
"gun can hit further, but not right next to them" (if that first letter's a G, that's a terrible G :P)

A fun logic puzzle! At first glance some of it seems contradictory though. I'll have to break out the pen and paper for this.

  • Still not sure on the "axe only swung once" but the suggestions that both Betty and Donna were hit. My current theory is that Betty and Donna were both next to Charles and so it only took one axe swing to hit both of them. The "two living names rhyme with one dead" is also tripping me up, Egbert and Gelbert are obvious but the others not so much, possibly look at nicknames? Perhaps there are actually two rhyming pairs (Charlie and Betty??), not a rhyming triplet?

Given that, my current guess is:

    Fabio: stabbed by Egbert
    Egbert: stabs Fabio
Betty: axed by Charles? but survives
Charles: axes Betty and Donna in one fell swing
Donna: axed by Charles, shoots Gelbert
    Arnold: does nothing
    Gelbert: shot by Donna

That's a seven-letter (or eight, if you include the H) combination, so I'm not sure what to do with it.

    1. Turn the Simon panel twice
    2. Open the tissue box
    3. Cup hands up to mirror and look through it to try to see if it is two-way

I think that Charles axes both Betty and Donna is a good guess. You've forgotten that Donna says "one person next to me is a killer, one is dead", so if Charles is a killer, then that means Egbert is dead.

    Arnold: Did nothing?
Betty: Axed by Charles. Shot Gelbert?
    Charles: Axed Betty and Donna.
Donna: Axed by Charles. Shot Gelbert?
    Egbert: Dead. Knifed Fabio?
    Fabio: Knifed.
    Gelbert: Shot. Knifed Fabio?

How did Egbert die, though? Charles couldn't've reached him with the axe, Gelbert couldn't've reached him with the knife, and a bullet couldn't've passed through him and miss Fabio and then hit Gelbert. Could Egbert have killed himself with the knife?

Have no idea what to do with this puzzle either by the way.

It’s like an old rotary telephone, minus the actual telephone part.
Can you explain what this means? Like it's just the rotary dial?
