    >Pick up and examine the hook and the hole it left in the mantel.
The hook is metallic, but rust free. Rust would have made your attempts to remove it unpleasant. The hook is long and large enough for you to grip in your palm, either end of the hook emerging from said grip without a fuss.

The base of the hook looks strange. You look closer. Instead of a screw, or anything that made sense, the base of the hook is a white pen tip. You don’t know what colour ink a hook would possess, but it’s there. Decorating the point is a ring of black dots.

You have aquired one (1) Hook Pen.

Examing the hole it looks like something within the fireplace was keeping the hook in place. You can't say you know how, since the end of the hook is a pen. Of all things....

Yeah, and when a picture was involved the first letter of what was in the picture. Ice Cream, Statue. Dunno why pink was at the end though.

I was pretty sure when it made a word, even more sure when I remembered that the safe was behind a picture of a ship.
There's a reason why it was those colours. I'll explain it at the end, since we should be almost there.

=D I was wondering if people would notice the room's hints!

    >Use the hook pen to connect the dots on the paper in order.
You turn to the dot painting, pen in hand, and begin joining the dots in black ink. As you join them, more labels appear to guide your hand. You finish drawing with a flourish and find that you have drawn what looks like a stereotypical bird. One claw is pointing upwards.

You hear a loud clunk, like something hitting metal, above you. A gust of cold air brushes the top of your head.

Something hard lands on your head. You hear it hit and roll along the floor by your feet. You look up in time to see a hatch swing closed as if it had never opened in the first place. Rubbing your now-aching skull, you reach down and pick up the candle it deposited. It has nine (9) notches along its side. It looks the same as the other candles you've found.

You have acquired one (1) candle.

Does that mean that all the candles have 9 notches along their sides?

    Nah, there are 6 candles. 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
They probably need to be arranged in ascending order.

    >Place all candles in the holes on the mantlepiece
You place candle nine (9) in the far right hole. Nothing appears to happen. From left to right, the candles are in the following order: five (5), six (6), seven (7), eight (8), ten (10), nine (9).

    >Pick up and replace the shoes.
You go back to the boots. No matter how you adjust them you can't seem to make the lights turn on again.

    >Grab each of the remaining hooks and wiggle them.
As before the remaining hooks are tightly fastened.

    >Examine the skis closely.
They are skis. Puke coloured, worn, with hundreds of scratches.

To save time and frustration: you've already found the clue needed for the candle order.

    >Replace the candles from right to left in ascending order.
From left to right, you rearrange the candles in the following order: ten (10), nine (9), eight (8), seven (7), six (6), five (5).

In a leftwards rush all six candles glow from within, almost like an invisible hand had swept across them. You hear a soft creak. It sounds like a small old hinge rubbing rust raw. A moment later something dark and shiny lands in the fireplace's ashes. It looks like a simple padlock key. What is with this room and dropping things, all of a sudden?

    >Use the key in the padlock on the safe.
With a click the lock opens and you swiftly remove it. You then discard the padlock onto the floor, where it falls with a loud clunk. Finally! You don't pause and yank the safe open.

    ....

    What.

Who keeps a bunch of potatoes inside a safe.

The safe is as large as the painting that laid in front of it, so the arrangement of potatoes is jarring. You open the door wider, letting the light behind you spill inside and light up the entirety. The five potatoes are surprisingly clean, and you notice a small piece of paper pinned under the potatoes.
