  • Good question. @BraveSirRobin?
Whenever we want to.  Heck, even today.  Just trying to advertise to the RMB people again, but if they don't get on the train, we can head off without them (at least initially).

On the topic of things we need for this roleplay though, @taulover care to generate a cool planet?  :)

(If not, I could do it too, but that probably wouldn't be as fun :P)

Which generator do you want to use?

  • We might be better off going with what Gerrick already made for Wintrean Union years back:
Hey, everybody. I was able to create a bunch of maps using a map generator: http://donjon.bin.sh/world/ (thanks again to taulover). I created more than I'd like to admit, but I narrowed it down to six that at least somewhat fit the descriptions:
    • Laurentus gets his own continent with an island or two near the equator (I situated each map so that this is on the right side to make it easier to compare)
    • plenty of mountains for Commander Zemas
    • enough land for the rest of us to fit on another larger continent or two
    • scattered islands and archipelagos
Remember that I am able to change of each map the sea level and the amount of ice at the poles and can flip the maps horizontally and vertically, so just look at the shapes/sizes/locations of the land masses for now. We can also say that one pole is just ice (like Earth's north pole) and the other is the snowy diplomatic land created by Weissreich (somewhat similar to Antarctica).

So if anybody has any input on which of these work better or worse (or if none work -- whether because they just aren't right enough or you don't really like the site used), that'd be appreciated. Also, in case you didn't know, the colors indicate elevation: the white and red mean high (mountainous) and the green low.
    Map 1
    Map 2
    Map 3
    Map 4
    Map 5
    Map 6

The next steps would be to choose the best map, decide if the sea level/polar ice is good and flip the map to the best way, then finally create a layer over it to carve out our nations with borders.
Here's two more I've generated, though I still don't think they compare to the finalized version of Gerrick's Map 4:

Early WWII to early Cold War. Tech should advance as the RP does.

  • I find it interesting that y'all like Map 1, considering that it was ruled out immediately last time after Bodobol disliked it the most.

  • It looks to me what annoyed Bodobol the most with the maps was the distortion of land near the poles which is a standard feature of any flat rectangular map. Putting that aside, his reasoning for not liking map 1 is that there was too much going on. He probably just wanted something simple to work with. As a strategist who likes to have multiple options open at all times, the map is perfect for me.

  • I agree with Aragonn, map 1 is strategically diverse. Allowing for more freedom of defense and attack for crafty leaders.
    End of Time

I remember there in the dawn,
When the suns rose and rose,
    That never could I know,
A sight more grand than this.

Now I sit here in the dusk,
While the suns die and die,
That never will I see a sight more sad,
    Or a sight more beautiful.

  • If you guys have problems with the maps from that website (with its difficulties of land grabbing and distortion), there's also this one, though it's more of a pangaea (though we could put two next to each other). Some pros of this site are that the maps are made of polygons, so there's an easy way for countries to establish their territory with (and fight over) predefined land tiles (which could be easily changed to each country's color in MS Paint), and it comes with biomes (which could also be changed) and rivers. The con is that it's much less complex in terms of continent shape (though, again, that could be changed in Paint).

With this map generator, you can change the shape (I prefer "perlin"), point selection (either "relaxed" for more natural or "hex" for uniform tiles), and number of tiles (I'd say max 2000).

An example (two maps side by side using perlin, relaxed, and 2000):
    With polygons (tiles)
    Smooth

    But it's whatever. :P

  • I really like the polygon tiles for land claims. My only issue is that it's kinda giving me trypophobia and making me nauseous as a result... Would vastly prefer it if it were uniform hexagons or something.

  • I think it kinda takes away from the realism, but it does simplify things enough for novices. Though to me those land masses look too small to cover a whole planet, so we'd have to bump it up on scale.
