I've mentioned Scribd several times before...it's my go-to source for books! Basically, it's a $8.99/month service that provides you with three tokens each month that can be used to read any book in its massive library of e-books and audiobooks, with additional "Select" titles each month that don't use a token. I know it sounds restrictive, but I've never ran into an issue, and if you don't use the tokens they stack up to a total of 9. They're also branching out into offering magazines, documents, and some other things.

In response to Trump's travel ban, Scribd is offering a one-month free trial to provide an opportunity for people to "educate themselves about what's happening right now". This free trial doesn't require that you give them your credit card number, so there's no risk of forgetting about being subscribed and charged for something you decide you don't want. I just thought I'd mention it because I use it and because it's free to try.
