The term "zombie" was first recorded way back in 1819. Zombies have existed in numerous cultures throughout the world, most notably in Haiti and Africa. Of course zombies in film really got their start in the 1960's thanks to George Romero's "Night of The Living Dead". They've had a significant impact on the world's culture, not just in film but for some, their everyday lives. How exactly? That's what we're here to talk about!

I recommend that everyone watch this really awesome video/documentary by Ahoy on the history of zombies, particularly in video games.

I'm not sure you can play an action-RPG without running into at least a few zombies to slay.

What I like about zombies and similar figures is the way that they capture people's imagine...I think unlike anything else that isn't real, they make is wonder what-if, and imagine worlds where they were a thing...which goes on to providing the spark to create books, games, shows, and movies that capture even more people's imaginations and starts the cycle all over again. If anything has been obvious of the past few years, it's that people can't get enough of the undead.

Plus they've managed to be worked into not just our literature, films and religions but also our doomsday theories. Zombies are right up there with nuclear war, the sun going supernova, Y2K and even the Maian 2012 thing. Nobody can say the same about vampires, werewolves or even dragons! I'd say that's rather impressive.
