Hello all!  As you all know, usually @tatte holds a debate for the candidates, but as the Finn is currently running for office, I have decided that I shall create an epic debate topic for all of the candidates, as one final "huzzah" before I take a two month break from politics here in the region as part of the Underhusen.

    Anyway, here it goes:

Good evening candidates and welcome to the Harkin Robin Steak Fry!  Today we have assembled a group of the finest Underhusen candidates in the land to tell all you guests about their platforms, goals for this session of the Underhusen, and vision for Wintreath as a whole in the future, near and far.  The questions are as follows:

    1. Before we get into the real meat of this event, I wanted to ask all of you—what make you decide to run for the Underhusen?  What do you think the main goal of this session of the legislature should be?

    2. Recently there has been a large amount of confusion surrounding the introduction of an Open Assembly, a goal that the previous two Underhusen sessions have attempted, with the latest session even sending an Amendment to the Fundamental Laws to the population for ratification.  Here, it was discovered that many citizens in fact did not like the Open Assembly Amendment in its current form.  How do you, a candidate for the Underhusen, propose better involving the citizenry before a ratification vote?

    3. As we all know, for an organism to remain successful and prosperous, it must expand.  What do you believe is the best way to catalyse growth and the expansion of Wintreath within NationStates?  Are there strategies of other regions that you believe could be adopted by us to increase the success of our recruitment efforts?

    4. What do you think the biggest problem Wintreath faces is at this point?

    5. Who is your favourite politician from history?

    6. What is your favourite form of government?

    7. Are there any other questions that you believe candidates should answer?  As this is a more informal debate (it's a steak fry, after all) feel free to engage in debate, or productive discussion, with your fellow candidates and upstanding citizens of the Wintreath community!  :)

    8. And now, arguably the most important question of them all—how would you like your steak?

  • The main goal of this legislature should be to figure out a compromise. I personally think, after the ratification fiasco, that an OA cannot work. But the current system drives people nuts. I think an Arbiter position will help but we need to figure something out.

I don't know. We tried to involve people and no one spoke up, before or after the ratification. I don't think that the majority of the citizenry want to be involved in political discussion before the last second.

3 ways: roleplay, roleplay and roleplay. We need more, we need more roleplays, more participation. The RP is one of the biggest draws.

    4. Inactivity. Alas, we cannot fix that. Real life and all that.

    Yes, 3 very important questions.

    Favorite politician ( FDR)

    Favorite government type (Democratic Socialism)

How do you want your steak done? (Medium)

  • 1. Find some way to end the Constitutional Convention in a way a super-majority can support. Some compromises are going to have to be made. That's democratic politics for you. I'm not so quick to write off an OA. I would like to hear more about what Cynosure's like, for instance. But the point remains that we should probably try to fix this hopeless system too. I'm not going to go all-in on an OA again. Or any system, for that matter.

    2. I think it might be time to experiment a bit with how we involve citizens and debate laws. The fighting doesn't do anyone any favours. I think trying something like The Six Thinking Hats decision-making process might be beneficial. I don't know why I haven't thought to try something like this a long time ago. It's an excellent tool when people can't seem to solve problems without getting into pointless, circular arguments in group projects. By giving everyone a role to play, and expecting everyone to play each role before we're done, it makes everything a lot less personal.

As to how I can actually get everyone to get involved, I don't know. Mention them a bunch of times and hope they respond? That doesn't sound like a particularly good idea either.

    3. I don't know much about external recruitment, but playing to our strengths is the surest way to keep growing and get citizens involved. That's why culture is booming with RPs and forum games. We're not really a NS region, we're more an online community that uses NS as a tool to recruit, but ignores it for the most part, though we occasionally flirt with defender gameplay. If the Ministry of Defence is closed down, for instance, I doubt much would be lost in terms of activity.

    4. Over-reliance on government to get things done, when our meritocratic system exists precisely because we want to encourage citizen involvement.

    5.

5.1. There can be such a thing as a favourite politician? Heresy. Blind Heresy. It doesn't exist. (Though if I absolutely had to choose, I'd choose Cyril Ramaphosa or Blade Nzimande, South Africa's last hopes. Fuck Mmusi Maimane, despite what all the DA drones would have you believe. Fuck him, I say).

5.2. Local context specific. Although I tend to lean in favour of meritocratic systems, as long as the actual right people run.

5.3. Lazy aged medium rare. And for god's sake, if you're unsure of what that means, just aim for rare and provide a hot plate. Baie dankie.

    Now for my three questions:

5.4. If you absolutely had to choose between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, who would you choose? (I still can't imagine consciously having to vote for either one. Still, ((goddamnit)) I have to go with Hillary ((washes mouth with soap)))

5.5. Who's your favourite ever dictator? (Caesar Augustus)

5.6. Favourite legal system? (Roman-Dutch, but obviously I'm biased)

I can't say I'm just stirring up the pot, can I? I'm very serious about running, of course. But wow, seven seats is a lot, as much as we have campaigning candidates currently. (Although I didn't know they raised it that high when I decided to run, a happy coincidence.) Good thing I started answering from the bottom.

While it's not necessarily a task for the UH, I would like to see the Constitutional Convention resolved. An overhaul of the election process is something I have been rooting for for a while now (Here's some possible pointers for that).

We could establish a temporary Constitutional Convention press releasing easy to swallow sized updates of the process, allowing people to effortlessly follow it and quickly step in if they read something in particular that they wish to give their opinion of.

I'm in favor of how nature has solved this issue: push forth the goods (think boobs). Recruitment is unavoidably a game of quantity, beyond that best possible results are achieved by perfecting the first glance appeal.

I've always really enjoyed being a member of the Underhusen in the past, but this time I think I've decided to run because of how much activity there is in the UH this term, and how much I think there is to be done. As for goals for this session, I think we definitely need to resolve the issues that have arisen from the Constitutional Convention. Similar to many here I haven't given up on the idea, and I think that we can find a balance in the implementation of an Open Assembly that'll keep everyone happy.

Getting people involved with forum related things is always going to be difficult to a degree. We have a pretty active base community, and many of those are at least hold a passing interest in what's going on, but getting everyone involved is hard. I think the best way to go about it is to try and increase our member base and regionwide forum activity as a whole to bring in new voices and new ideas. Hopefully, an influx or even a trickle of new members willing to get involved will encourage those who are here already but often hold back from posting to get involved :)

Recently I've seen a lot of activity on the RMB, and I think that if we can find a way to invest in that and bring people into the region properly there's definitely potential to grow. I'm not really knowledgeable about Wintreath, but I think promoting the cultural aspects of the region will definitely be a big draw (or at least a draw of some form haha), as I get the impression a lot of people like RPing on NS.

    4. What do you think the biggest problem Wintreath faces is at this point?
I'm not sure we really have any one biggest problem, but if I had to point to one thing... I think it would probably be the lack of new blood. We have an excellent community here in the region, especially on the forums, but for all that Wintreath is a 400-500 nation region over on NS we don't really get any long-term member growth. Many on our RMB seem passingly interested in the idea of politics, and they're all definitely enjoying roleplaying too, so we could really benefit from this.

Hmm, no favourite politician but I rate Noam Chomsky pretty heavily as a political theorist.

A few; other than the questions about the Open Assembly, what do you guys want to focus on this term? Do you guys think attempting to recruit more heavily from the RMB could help alleviate some of the issues we face in terms of activity and involvement? Other that that, most of my questions have been asked :p

  • 1. Before we get into the real meat of this event, I wanted to ask all of you—what make you decide to run for the Underhusen?  What do you think the main goal of this session of the legislature should be?

Meaningful constitutional reform.   Legislation should be sound, rational, and not prepared based on emotions and feelings.  The discussion on the OA thread became way more heated than necessary.  I want to run so that we can get work done and activity going, more than just this election.  I have experience as a legislator elsewhere, and in government in NS, and I want to bring that here.

Bring forth the bill to the Citizens' Platform first, and then implement any changes to the bill, and bring it to the Underhusen floor.  Any changes made in the UH should come back to the Citizens' Platform for discussion.

Alternatively, I can support the ideal of a Tricameral Assembly: the Overhusen, the Underhusen, and the citizens into a Town Council or Citizen Assembly.  It combines an elected and appointed legislature with more involvement of the other citizens in government for those who are not in any position currently.

    3. As we all know, for an organism to remain successful and prosperous, it must expand.  What do you believe is the best way to catalyse growth and the expansion of Wintreath within NationStates?  Are there strategies of other regions that you believe could be adopted by us to increase the success of our recruitment efforts?

We do have our region improving though.  We are hopefully close to reaching 600 nations.  We should have more contests to encourage people to recruit.

I will be having money coming in next month, and I will now say this.  The first recruiter that is not Wintermoot, who brings in our 600th nation into our region, will get a free Video game of their choice!  [/u]  THAT IS A PROMISE.

    4. What do you think the biggest problem Wintreath faces is at this point?

Culture wise, we have active RP and we should keep that up.

Government wise, well here are a few things I'd like to see:
    A. Separation of government powers, in both personnel and branches.  A person who is in the executive level of government should not be in the legislative or judicial, and vice versa.  We have enough users on the forum active enough that we do not need to have more than one person in more than one branch of government.

We also do not have enough transparency in government.  Even if it's not legally required, people should know when appointments to the RMB or government are made, with reasoning given.  The logs of cabinet discussions from earlier months has not been released in line with the Sunshine Policy.

We should work on getting an active judicial branch.  That means, they convene when cases need to be heard, and work on updating case law here and there when they are not needed.

Government should not be upset when questioned on their policies.  Government answers to the people, not the other way around.  People should always question authority, and Government should never ignore them because they're asking questions they don't like hearing.

That means if I'm elected, will I get questioned on how I'm doing?  Yes.  Will I mind?  No.  When I was Prime Minister of a region I was questioned about my policies from the Leader of the Opposition Party, and I didn't punish or admonish anyone for it.   Questioning someone, expecting satisfactory answers (and satisfactory in the eyes of who questioned them), is not pestering anyone.   That's how it works in RL government, from the local city councils up to Parliament / the Prime Ministry, and Congress and the Presidency.

    5. Who is your favourite politician from history?

Several: In no particular order: Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, Indira Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Narendra Modi, Margaret Thatcher, Winston Churchill, Vaclav Havel, Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev, Anwar el Sadat, Golda Meir, Yitzhak Rabin, Menachem Begin, and Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo

    6. What is your favourite form of government?

A Federal (democratic) republic, much like how it is in the US and India.

    7. Are there any other questions that you believe candidates should answer?  As this is a more informal debate (it's a steak fry, after all) feel free to engage in debate, or productive discussion, with your fellow candidates and upstanding citizens of the Wintreath community!  :)

    A. How do you all feel about what government can do to be more transparent?

    B. Do you think there should be separation of powers?

    C. Outside of Underhusen reform, is there any form of reform you'd like to see elsewhere?

    8. And now, arguably the most important question of them all—how would you like your steak?

As a Hindu, Medium rare.  No A1 on it.

  • 1. Before we get into the real meat of this event, I wanted to ask all of you—what make you decide to run for the Underhusen?  What do you think the main goal of this session of the legislature should be?
Well aside from the fact that I always run for UH, I do believe we should work on refining our current system. Fix some long standing issues, and perhaps fix some odd sections of our Fundamental Laws.

    Quote
I don't think there is much we CAN do. Part of that is due to apathy, and we can only attempt to bring more balanced debating models to the convention, in an attempt to prevent things from having happened, that have happened.

    3. As we all know, for an organism to remain successful and prosperous, it must expand.  What do you believe is the best way to catalyse growth and the expansion of Wintreath within NationStates?  Are there strategies of other regions that you believe could be adopted by us to increase the success of our recruitment efforts?
I think we are doing the best we can, aside from perhaps getting more people into recruitment.

    4. What do you think the biggest problem Wintreath faces is at this point?
I have several statements I could make, although they would not be appropriate for here. I'm sure most people who know me, know what they are.

    5. Who is your favourite politician from history?
I'm not sure, although I have to say Bernie Sanders is pretty close.

    Quote
    6. What is your favourite form of government?
Any form where I am in charge. :P

But more seriously, it depends on where we are talking about.
    NS, probably our system.
Real-Life, a Federal Republic system like Germany seems nice, but preferably one where the government doesn't spy on you, has a decent social net, and also is not insane.

    7. Are there any other questions that you believe candidates should answer?  As this is a more informal debate (it's a steak fry, after all) feel free to engage in debate, or productive discussion, with your fellow candidates and upstanding citizens of the Wintreath community!  :)
I have a few, but I would probably incur the wrath of someone if I actually asked them. I'd imagine a few people would probably know what I am talking about :P

  • Sorry, Robin. I was too busy silently protesting Laurentus' Hillary/Trump question and somehow assumed it would be asked of all of us.
In any case, I'd be more than happy to enjoy a nice steak fry :)

    1. What make you decide to run for the Underhusen?  What do you think the main goal of this session of the legislature should be?
I want to craft legislation that works, is practical, and is error-free. Especially in the case of the Open Assembly, which we have been working on for several months now, I believe we should strive to fix existing legislation and introduce new bills (such as that of the OA) to mend the government from within.

    2. How do you, a candidate for the Underhusen, propose better involving the citizenry before a ratification vote?
Promoting discussion on the Citizen's Platform would be ideally enough, but even though the Constitutional Convention has been the topmost section of the forums for months, the debate has been anything but lively. In this unfortunate situation, I hope to reach out to citizens privately, asking them to message their thoughts anonymously so as to foster ideas free from ridicule, or perhaps by sending out surveys via private message asking their feelings on the current and ideal implementations of an Open Assembly.

    3. What do you believe is the best way to catalyse growth and the expansion of Wintreath within NationStates?  Are there strategies of other regions that you believe could be adopted by us to increase the success of our recruitment efforts?
I certainly admire the way that we've heightened our recruitment efforts to become one of NationStates' largest regions in nation count. However, we need to emphasize a way to translate that to growth of members on the forums. As it stands, Wintreath consists largely of two separate communities—the regional message boards on the main site and the regional forums here—and I can name only a handful of examples of nations in recent memory who have successfully transitioned from message board activity to forum citizenship, and even then, those members are still not as active as those who joined here outright, if I recall correctly.

That being said, I don't think there is a better way to increase recruitment numbers to the region in general (not necessarily the forums but the main NationStates entity) than the telegrams we have been sending and the promotion of Wintermoot's Steam key recruitment contest. I at one point did draft legislation requiring Skrifa to recruit a number of nations per month, but that idea never panned out.

    4. What do you think the biggest problem Wintreath faces is at this point?
I think communication between the citizenry and the government is sorely lacking at the moment, especially in the sense that some of our citizens fear contacting the Underhusen for fear of disagreement or being belittled for their opinions. If I haven't already, I want to actively invite citizens to contact Skrifa either privately or publicly in an open environment where opinions can be shared freely. I can set up an "ask your representative" thread in the Citizens' Platform to keep debate like this going throughout each Underhusen term.

    5. Who is your favourite politician from history?
While acknowledging that every politician has flaws, some of which are fatal enough to ruin their entire careers, I admire the Kennedys and the Roosevelts.

    6. What is your favourite form of government?
I happen to like federal republics and constitutional monarchies.

Well, I enjoyed my last two sessions despite some road blocks.  However, I think those specific road blocks were what helped pave the way to some very efficient sessions, and I would like to see more of those.  It's those active sessions that make me enjoy the UH, whether being a part of it or not.

Right now, I think the main focus is getting an accord of some kind for the new system we're trying to implement.  Sure, we can update our procedural rules and whatnot...but once the new system arrives, that's just busy-work that will go away.  I think our main focus needs to be insuring that the new system can come into play effectively in a way that will benefit all of Wintreath as a whole...and likewise is something we can all agree with.

Actually, I think the current way is decent.  It's a trial and error sort of thing.  If anyone really thought that such a change was going to be introduced without any opposition whatsoever...regardless of how late or early it arrived, this was an awakening.  Much like the OA itself is going to have late voters, you're going to have the late voters in its inception for whatever reason.  But it's in moments like this that we can sit down and work with those individuals to find a common ground.  Therefore, I think the way we're going about it is just fine.  Those involved have had time to cool down, and we're back to thinking logically about it rather than emotionally.  As I said, it's going to be trial and error, and I'll be surprised if it passes in the second attempt, since this is going to take a LOT of time to develop into something really ideal.

Outside of the cultural events I've seen, such as TRR's Rock paper and Scissors tournament...there's always going to be a divide between Wintreath the region and Wintreath the forums.  You're always going to get drifters, players that are purely interested in just being in the region with no involvement, those that join the forums for a day, those that join for a week, and those that become active members.  There's really no perfect system to overcome this, except to keep doing what we do to draw new members.  I think culturally we're going in the right direction since the draw lately has definitely been bigger...and games have been more active.

    Quote
    4. What do you think the biggest problem Wintreath faces is at this point?

Direction.  I hate saying it like that, but from a distance, it's the truth.  Politically, we want change (well, many of us do), but we can't decide on the best way to go.  I think we're also just overall a bit politically divided to where I'm surprised there's no Political Parties, despite this desire for all of us to work together and to reach a consensus.

Culturally we're starting to take off, but we're mostly active in one area (Werewolf) with some gradual improvement in RP...though it's still a work in progress.  We're getting members wanting to participate, but we're not having an easy time shifting that into multiple areas, and are just now getting others interested in taking a shot in their own games.

Outside of those and the general spam threads, there seems to be an aura of confusion as to what to do on Wintreath, despite the Orendi, Recruitment, Military, Newsletters (IE the Lusty Jarl), and whatnot.  People want to participate...but they don't.  This was made very clear when I posted the Wintreath's Got Talent thread a second time and put it to a vote, and a majority so far has only been interested in wanting to see it, not participate.

But this is something the UH can't fix.  This is something that we as a region need to figure out.  There's a lot to do here...and with all of what we offer and with people not being interested, perhaps we offer far too much to where it's daunting to people.

    5. Who is your favourite politician from history?
I've never been the biggest into politics, so I don't have a particular favorite at the top of my head whose career I know well enough to make such an established decision.  If they were a politician that was for equality in all forms of the word, then chances are I liked them since first and foremost, that's my biggest thing I want from a politician.

    Quote
    6. What is your favourite form of government?
Well, it's not a "favorite" since again, that goes into #5.  However, I lean more towards being a Democratic Socialist on the political spectrum.  For those who are going to inevitably confuse that and Communism, I'll explain in better detail:

I believe in a system that, while it pushes people to earn for themselves...it's not a complete capitalist approach.  Certain necessities such as College/University/overall Education, Healthcare, and whatnot I believe should be free, or at least paid for in the taxes that we pay...rather than having to be saddled with outrageous debt that most outside of the wealthy class will inevitably be paying for many years to come, if not the rest of their lives (aka college loans).

I also believe that if you do your best and are fired for something that isn't misconduct (you weren't fast enough for the job, they didn't have the hours), it shouldn't haunt you and put you on the street.  The Welfare system in the US is a nightmare because of those who abuse it, and Unemployment in the US is a nightmare because a company can claim misconduct and you'll be denied unemployment benefits.

These things are unacceptable, and I believe there needs to be some type of safety net that keeps people off the streets and able to work, but also insures that people can't milk the system and take advantage of it.

Any question someone is wanting to ask should be asked unless it is requested reasonably by a candidate not to be (for reasons such as wanting to not have a heated debate in their campaigns).  There's no such thing as a stupid question, and most questions are encouraged to be asked.

    Quote
    8. And now, arguably the most important question of them all—how would you like your steak?
While I prefer medium-well steak on most occasions,  I don't believe there's bad way to have steak unless it's completely raw or completely burnt.  With the right seasoning and sauces, any steak can be a good steak.

This thread is supposed to house answers of the candidates to some basic questions and hopefully facilitate a civil discussion in which all may express their views about the future of Wintreath. :)
