The queens of self love wrote a stupidly catchy song all about loving yourself and keeping your head up and keep on walking even when people don't get you.

Huh. I've always liked this song, because it kinda perfectly show-cases someone trying to be a high-functioning depression sufferer, but finding their own act hollow. At least that's the vibe I get from it. I didn't notice before that MGMT was also involved, though. Considering their later introspective turn with My Little Dark Age, I shouldn't be surprised, lol. 

I couldn't find this song for the longest time, but it was well worth the effort because it has immense sentimental value to me. It was used at my primary school's farewell ceremony and no one knew what it was or who by. It was 2006, so we also weren't as connected to the internet back then, at least in South Africa. I swear there's a longer version that has a deeper, darker sound, but that might just be a faulty memory, or the speakers I first heard it on might have given it that effect. 

@Laurentus: The title says that it's the radio edit, which implies that there's a longer version somewhere. Looks like there's a lot of remixed versions of the song too...so it has to be out there somewhere. I'm glad you were able to at least find the song though...that's awesome after so long.

I read about this song in a book the other day...the author was going through a traumatic time and a music video was playing with some lyrics. I looked up the lyrics and found the song, which is now in my hope and love playlist. =]

Definitely reminds me of some of my parents' old music... I look for them because I'm nostalgic and I end up finding completely different versions of the song by the same artist that sound similar yet not the same.

Pianist Nahre Sol's "Empty Rituals" and video game composer Lena Raine's "Aerie" from Minecraft 1.19 start on incredibly simple chords. Half the time when the game boots up these days I half expect Nahre Sol's effortless playing to begin.

@taulover: I was just reading the other week that a lot of people are nostalgic for their parents' music that they heard as a kid, and that's why 60s-80s music is still so popular today...it was a small set of songs that everyone listened to on the radio. The question is whether it'll be the same with modern music, since the internet allows for a wider variety of music that isn't universal to everyone.

I really enjoyed what you posted, especially Aerie! Empty Rituals kinda reminded me of something else I discovered over the summer...they're both kinda minimalist and calming:

Weirdly, I went through a period from about the ages of 12-17 where I couldn't stand my parents' music. But I really love the '80s now. 

Anyway, another ode to a rebellious youth:

The universal in the Chinese-speaking world of the 80s was Teresa Teng. She was Taiwanese and came to prominence there and in Southeast Asia, but as China started opening up, her pop songs became the first to really become popular there also, in particular The Moon Represents My Heart:

It's from an album of Classical Chinese poems set to original music. The poet is far from home, drunk and missing his home and his brother, looking up at the same moon that he knows he also is, despite being thousands of miles apart.

I was struck by some of the universals. The instrumentals to The Moon Represents My Heart wouldn't have been out of place in a slower-paced American country song around that same time. The music to the second song is absolutely beautiful, and again, the universal of two people connecting with each other, overcoming time and distance, by starting into the moon at the same time with the thought of each other in mind. I'm always a sap for that one, it's just such a sweet idea.  ;-; 

On another tangent, I was just reminiscing about nostalgia, but in a slightly different way.

This song was included on a video on Youtube called THE INTERNET on April 4th, 1998 (since removed due to copyright claims, then reuploaded). I remember watching it about mid-morning at work on June 29th, 2012...it was one of those slow, casual Friday mornings where there wasn't much work to be done, so I spent the morning on Youtube and hanging out online, then later on some of us at work went to iHop for breakfast/lunch. At the end of the day I went home and my mom and I went to Chili's to have dinner, as we did every two weeks on payday. This was back before our relationship turned into...whatever it is today.

That's the time the big derecho hit, and we were without power for two weeks. Then after that I started struggling with health issues, the same ones that led me to find NationStates as a distraction from them, and from then on it's seemed to be one thing after another that's continued to this day. I think of that day as the last truly carefree day in my life, and listening to this song reminds me of the blissful carefree innocence I had before life kept happening.

This song plays during perhaps one of the darkest twists of all time. It rivals things like Game of Thrones' "hold the door." And it's just excellent at piling on some more anguish.
