How about this: Before writing the battles, we check with each other to agree on the setting. That way we don't get confused.

I found this solar system generator. It doesn't provide many life supporting planets however.

Just create a list of possible inhabitable single biome worlds then use a random number generator to determine which type of world it'll be.

Then use the same method for what type of star system and number of planets in the system.

Sometimes, the info it comes up with is weird. Fortunately, it also lets you adjust each part separately.
