@taulover, @Aragonn, @Colberius X, have you ever seen the movie Event Horizon? The entire movie, I was thinking: "Hey, this is just like WH40K!" It turns out the movie is notorious for that fact. It isn't actually based on it, it's just incredibly similar. It is like watching the first contact with the forces of Chaos play out.

I actually have seen Event Horizon. It was years ago. That movie freaked me the fuck out. As I would imagine any contact with Daemons should. But you're right about it sharing similarities.

Well hey there, stranger!

Since some people that were once close friends to me left a few years ago, I've occasionally gone through the events that led to their departure in my mind, only to reach the same conclusion time and time again...that there was nothing I could have done differently. Their arguments were without merit, and their demands sprung from a personal vendetta that was unreasonable and ultimately would have changed the region for the worse. Each time, I concluded that the loss of those friendships were just the cost of being a leader...but that has never given me much comfort, leading me to inevitably re-evaluate the whole thing later on.

But yesterday I realized my failing...I didn't fail as Monarch or as Founder, I failed on a more personal level as a friend, because I never tried to save the friendships that I mourn were lost. Once, long before I ever came to NationStates or met anyone here, a friend noted that when I felt I had been betrayed or hurt by someone I was close to, my reaction was always to cut them out of my life as if they were a cancer on my soul...and that's exactly what I did. Neither before or after what happened, I never reached out and at least tried to save those friendships...I never tried to personally explain myself, ask for forgiveness, or at least expressed how much their friendship meant to me. Doesn't anyone I consider to be a close friend deserve that much, at least?

Maybe in the end it wouldn't have mattered, maybe things would have gone the way they did no matter what...but we'll never know now because I never tried. And it only took nearly three years to realize that I should have...what does that say about me?

But seriously though.  We all have flaws, we all can be really stubborn and irrational, and it takes us a heck of a lot longer to learn things than it should.  But, though there are drawbacks to that, think of all be benefits, too!  We get to constantly learn new things!  Sometimes we even get to learn things one hundred times before we change our behaviour!  The world is a vast place, and you can make a lot of screw ups before coming around and realising your mistakes.  It's quite a fascinating phenomenon, too! 

And it could be argued that it's never too late to explain yourself, apologize, and tell someone how much they meant to you. They may or may not have just been waiting to hear you say something like that.

Real friendships survive no matter the circumstance.  You have flaws, they have flaws, and you both acknowledge and accept those flaws and a mutual respect and friendly type of love is created.  If they sever that bond for whatever reason, they weren't your actual friends to begin with.  Because even if one side was the absolute worst, true friends would see it through and move past those rocky moments.

You have no reason to explain yourself or apologize for anything.  If they up and leave, that's on them.

If the opportunity presents itself in the future, I may do so, but I wouldn't know how to even contact them at this point. That being said, I think a point comes that it is too late. I've tried the whole reconnect with old friends thing and even in cases where there wasn't a falling out it just didn't work out...people change, the things that you bonded over change, your relevance changes for the worst. Usually you have a few nice conversations, reminisce some, and then it just putters out.

But that bond takes communication and effort to maintain, and that's something that I didn't do when it most mattered. They aren't blameless, and if I had tried and failed, I would agree that it was on them...but I didn't try, so I have to share some of the blame.

And it's not just them, my history is littered with close friendships that fell apart in a similar matter...I can't say that it's entirely everyone else's fault and that I'm blameless. At some point I have to accept that the only consistent feature of all my dissatisfying relationships is me. I got that from a demotivational poster, btw.
