It is, but (at least here in New York) it gets pushed aside for a focus on math and English.  New York does a decent job, in my opinion, of still requiring history to be taught throughout all grade levels, but it certainly isn't a priority like math or English. It's mathematics and English scores that are factored into how the state assesses school performance; no one looks at history scores. And a lot of states have education systems far worse than New York's, so I can't imagine what it's like elsewhere in the country.

Here, Afrikaner history has pretty much been thrown down the crapper, even though we built the first cities of any decent size, and has been replaced with quite politically correct retellings of apartheid, but ignoring some of the worst crimes committed by Umkhonto we Sizwe, the military wing of the ANC, such as placing tyres around the necks of other black people because they refuse to get involved with the fighting, and then burning them. But every gruesome crime committed by the apartheid government is retold. And they also quite conveniently forget about white people who fought to end apartheid, and when confronted about this glaring hole in our curriculum, they look at you as though you're urinating in public.

Like. That defeats the whole damn point of history. By all means, go into detail about the heinous crimes committed by the apartheid regime, but don't ignore the offences of all other groups involved, or the hard work that white South Africans did to try and end it.
