So, how do we fulfill the mission of scouting new planets? Do we discover new tech on the way that will let us communicate back to Wintreath?
FTL communication seems to be, at this stage, all but impossible anyway.http://https://www.quora.com/How-possible-is-the-Quantum-Entanglement-communications-from-the-Mass-Effect-games
Using ion engines to travel at lightspeed doesn't make sense either. In terms of tech, it looks like this RP is throwing realism out of the window anyway.

I don't know if that would make sense technologically, but if it does than it gives us a way to leave soonish. It might make sense; since USS Wintreath is for long-term transport, there might be something faster on the short-term.Or, if necessary, they could catch up while we're on a break at one of the outposts/colonies.

Yeah, it's mostly space magic.
True. As a big ship, the prototype FTL isn't reliable and probably highly unstable. A small ship may be able to utilize the prototype FTL drive without exploding like the death star.

But your post gets me thinking: how large is USS Wintreath?
