Or perhaps it could function like Runescape, where if you hover over a username, it reveals that user's most recent former name, and then both names would be acceptable when mentioning someone. Well, if that's at all possible.

I like this idea. I would suggest visually to keep the username unchangeable and use that for mentions, and then have an nickname that is equally visible, always changeable, but noticeably different.

Edit: The username/nickname thing doesn't necessarily have to be those two fields exact. What you want really is an unchangeable more prominent mentionable name, and then also visible but not as prominent, a nickname that you can easily change.

Would it be possible for the mention system to work on the registration name, and for the registration name to show up in a new field underneath the avatar, perhaps? That way, the person can always change their nick, but have the registration name there for easy reference and mentioning.

I do know it's possible with some message boards.  With 10KI, they grab your registered name, and then the name that shows in the mention is your username, regardless of what it is.  So even if someone changed their username 50000 times, it'd always be accurate.

EDIT: In other words, Laurentus could call himself FuzzyEmperorOfTheNorth, TheGuyThatDoesThings, LaurentusOfHighever, and pretty much as many names as he wants to, and all someone would have to do is use the mention feature (a button on 10KI) start typing his current name in the search or just type his registered name (@tredania for example for mine), and it'd always mention him, and the shown user name would change to reflect his current one (in other words, if you refreshed the page after he changed it again, the shown username would still be his current one).

So it'll always mention the person since you're using the registered nickname...but the shown username would ALWAYS be accurate.

Yeah, I imagine that'd be how it'd work best - a User Field that displays under the profile picture or above it, like the Title does.
