  • Dogs are too much work. You have to train them, and that's time out of my busy schedule.

With a cat, you say.. poop in this box and I'll clean it sometimes. In return, the cat cuddles with you, purrs at you, squints at you, does hilarious things. To all appearances, it loves and understands you, which is sometimes all you need to get through the day.

If you feel the need to have a dog coming on, have some kids instead, I always say.

I didn't think anyone would contest the assertion that dogs require more training than cats.. =p. Having been the sole owner of both types of pets, I have found it to be unrelentingly true.

It really just depends on the dog and likewise the cat, since animals like humans are not all the same.  One child may require constant learning and training compared to another, who may have grown up a bit differently but is capable of similar things.

You can teach a cat to use a litterbox, for example, but you can't teach every cat to not claw the fuck out of you if they think you're petting them too much unless you spray them to death with a water bottle or spank them on the butt.  But even then, they'll still do it and might claw you even more for spanking them.

Likewise, you don't have to train a dog to love you, because they will always want to cuddle up to you and be your friend if they feel comfortable around you, and they end up being much better protectors than a cat ever will be.  What's scarier to a person coming to rob your house?  A cat hissing?  Or a big dog growing and showing their teeth because they know there's an intruder?

My point being cats will love on you if they so choose, and hate you when they so choose, regardless of how you treat them.  They'll hide in a corner and let someone run through your house and steal everything, since they really don't care.  And you can train them to use the litterbox all you like, but guess what?  Do something they don't like, and they'll piss on your clothes, bed, or wherever else they feel like.

Dogs, sure, they're difficult at first and may need more training, but it pays off in the end.  Teach a dog to go to the bathroom outside, and they'll do it every time unless you can't read the signs that they need to go out.  They'll love on you nonstop and won't have a limit on how much they like to be pet, and will play with you whenever you want to.  Train them right and they'll protect your house from intruders while still being a good and friendly dog for people that you know and trust.

I've owned plenty of dogs growing up, and I've seen how they can be when they're trained correctly.  I've also lived with plenty of people that owned cats including my parents at one point, and I've seen how they can be regardless of how you try to train them.  Quite frankly, dogs may be a bit more work, but I highly prefer owning them to a pet that has constant mood swings like a teenager and only likes you when it wants something from you.

I won't deny that it was a large factor in my decision to want one.

  • Dogs, no contest. I've never liked cats, and cats have always gone out of their way to show me that the feeling is mutual. Seriously, fuck cats.

My favourite breeds of dogs are Rhodesian Ridgebacks, bull terriers, bull dogs, huskies, golden retrievers and Jack Russels. I absolutely despise curly haired dogs, though.

    Bull terrier

Many people misunderstand bull terriers, and consequently deprive themselves of owning fiercely loyal, fun-loving and intelligent dogs.

It's definitely not the type of dog that first-time dog owners should get, as it requires a great deal of patience, training, socialising from a young age, and tons and tons of physical exercise. This is the type of dog that can become overly aggressive if left in the hands of an unskilled owner. It is also one of the most powerfully built dogs in the world.

The brindle one looks positively majestic, but I've never much liked the pure white ones.

It is best described as a clown that doesn't quite know its own strength
    .

I currently own one, and seeing it run around the house in pleasure of seeing me is just the thing I need after a hard day at the university.

    Bull dog

One of the few dogs that I'll own simply for being cute. It is also very powerful, however, and requires great knowledge about the breed to keep it fit and healthy.

    Rhodesian Ridgeback

A hunting dog bred with the express purpose of hunting lions, this dog is easily recognised by the ridge of hair on its back that grows in the opposite direction of the rest of the coat. It is slender, powerful, fast, and fiercely intelligent. It is also stubborn, and its will can't be broken. This dog absolutely will not submit as a slave, and its owner isn't really its owner, it's its friend. Like any friend, this dog will not suffer ill treatment, and should be treated with respect.

It really is almost human with its intelligence and personality, and I won't think twice about buying one after I graduate and move into my own place.

We owned one for 14 years, and when that dog died, it really felt like a close relative passed away.

    Jack Russel

This is another terrier, often used in South Africa for hunting smaller wildlife.

While small, it has the heart of a lion beating in its chest, and it is afraid of absolutely nothing. It's playful, loyal, and extremely easy to handle, as long as you yourself are also active. It is not particularly smart as dogs go, but it still has an incredible amount of personality, and is quite easy to train. I just don't have the heart to own one in the city, however, as they are fond of chasing motor cycles or cars, and subsequently get run over frequently.

I'm not going to post pictures of Huskies and Golden Retrievers, as they are already popular, and there isn't that great a variety in colours and so forth.

  • I particularly liked the Rhodesian Ridgeback on that list.  That looks like an absolutely gorgeous breed and very majestic.  I wouldn't mind owning one of those, though I don't know if I'd be able to have the skill to train it properly just yet.

Cute is a Coton de Tuléar, a West Highland or a young Yorkshire Terrier.
