It sounds like the university I am going to might be among the only ones in California that actually has service learning as a general ed requirement and that it has to be taken more than once for both lower and upper division.
Oh yeah it is 25 hours of service required in my class at a single site. I am doing mine at a Boys and Girls Club on the one day that I can serve there; Fridays from 2-6pm. I already have about 8.5 hours from two days of service.
There was community service in high school which was different from service learning because there was no need to reflect on the service in writing but there was a lot of paperwork for each service activity (about as much as with this class). It was a graduation requirement separate from the other requirements in high school.
There is actually a fair amount of variation with service learning classes. I only saw The American Dream: Promise and Reality as an option when enrolling but it had a few categories within it. The one I chose to take is Youth, Schools, and Power but some other options included classes focused on art, science, business, and (presumably) mathematics and more specific sciences/the environment.
