Wintreath ChillTube
Distraction-Free YouTube Videos, Curated by the Wintreath Community
Chances are, you spend more than a little bit of time watching YouTube. Since it launched in 2006 it's become a pillar of the internet and the go-to video site for most people. But not everything about the YouTube website is great including a cluttered UI, algorithm-driven recommendations that push outrage content to drive "engagement", and a comments section that's distracting if not outright toxic.
Wouldn't it be great if you could explore YouTube videos that have been recommended by fellow Wintreans? With none of the distractions, the toxicity, or the algorithms?Wintreath ChillTube is something I'm developing as an experiment to allow for just that. Using it is simple: go to the page and watch the random video presented. Or if you don't think you'll like that video, click the Switch button to try another one. Every video will be included because somebody in Wintreath recommended it, and will abide by Wintreath's rules (
did you know that YouTube recently weakened its rules on hate speech?).
My original idea was to focus specifically on videos that are calming and relaxing (thus, ChillTube), because I think we need videos to chill out to now more than ever. However, in time we can use something like categories to expand this to any video that someone feels adds value to our library. And that's really the ultimate goal: to create a true Wintrean library beyond what any one person or playlist could put together, to create our very own section of YouTube that's curated by Wintreans, for Wintreans.
Subsequent posts will detail current development and links to the current development pages.
