  • And in despair I bowed my head
There is no peace on Earth I said
For hate is strong and mocks the song
Of peace on Earth, good will to men

These words were first written in 1863, but seem as relevant today as ever as we struggle through a world filled with despair, anger, and hate. Many of us have had struggles and challenges this year, myself included, and for some it may even seem like there isn't much to celebrate this year. How can we when so many people are suffering in so many different ways?

But if I've learned anything this year, it's that we must hold on to and celebrate the good in our lives, whatever form that takes. We must take time to recognize and appreciate those good things, even if it's just one hobby that we can go to to find joy and peace for awhile or one person who keeps us grounded throughout the chaos of our lives.

This year was a time of many changes in my life, both offline and in our online world of Wintreath. I went through dark times that made me question my worth as both a leader and a person, and I lost close friendships in the process. But at the same time I'm so grateful for what I've gained this year and to have so much good in my life to fall back on...including people who believed in me and got me through the dark times and helped make me a better person in the process. Ultimately, they are a part of the light in my life, and part of what made this year worth living.

And once we find that light in our lives, I believe we must become the light ourselves through practicing love, even when that isn't always the easiest thing to do and even if we sometimes falter. I firmly believe that only love can pierce through the darkness of anger and hate, and that we can only build the society we want (both in Wintreath and in general) through love, which encompasses understanding, compassion, mercy, patience, gratitude, giving, and more.

Even in a world that can seem so dark, it's still a great time to take a break from the normalcy of our lives and remember, cherish, and celebrate the people and things that give our lives meaning. I hope that you will take some time this holiday season to enjoy those things and to have good times with the people who matter to you. Because ultimately, life is best lived when we have each other.

    Happy holidays!

I went all the way to Cassadega to commune with the dead
They said "You'd better look alive"
