What is a food you tried recently, that you really liked eating?

  • I guess the most recent thing I tried was sushi, which I talked about in the "If You Could Only Eat One Thing" topic. We just don't tend to try new foods often I'm afraid, lol.

  • The new big food for me is Marmite. I'd heard of it before but never tried it (probably because people say Vegemite tastes gross, and I assumed they were the same, although I guess not). Anyway I gave it a try after listening to the podcast the Friendship Onion with Dominic Monaghan and Billy Boyd (Merry and Pippin from Lord of the Rings) where they reviewed it.

I'm really glad I tried it because it's fantastic. It's sorta hard to describe the taste, but it has a savory, salty, soy saucey flavor. It's very powerful, so I don't put a whole lot on my toast. I especially like to eat it on a sandwich with toasted pumpernickel bread, butter, sharp cheddar, and arugula with salt and vinegar chips on the side. My wife and I have eaten a couple sandwiches a week over the past month or so because we like it so much.

Very much recommend picking up at least a tiny bottle at your local international food store if you're in the US and giving it a try

Marmite is a food spread from England made from yeast extract. It has a thick and sticky consistency, almost like honey, but flavorwise as I said above, it's very salty and savory. It's typically eaten on toast or crackers or the like and often with cheese, but apparently it can also be used to add flavor to beans, stews, and other dishes or even drinks (haven't tried any with it yet, though).
