If someone were in the market for an MMO, that happens to be cheap and scales well across a wide range of hardware set-ups, what would you all recommend? I'm generally into fantasy and sci-fi.

Tera! I absolutely love this game, even though I haven't been playing it recently. It runs pretty well on my super basic $650 laptop, but if you have a nice gaming comp the graphics are really nice. Anyway, it's free to play, so why not give it a shot?

Didn't I read earlier this month that they had to disable chat cause it let people run code that could infect people's machines with malware?

When it comes to sci-fi, the biggest MMOs out right now are probably Star Trek Online and EVE Online. I tried EVE last year, but I wasn't that thrilled with it...without a powerful corporation (guild) backing you, it's easy to end up spending your time mining or refining in safer regions of the game, which honestly loses its novelty after awhile. It's been a few years since I last played Star Trek Online, but it had some good content and missions that were interesting. Then again, I'm not sure how appealing the game is if you're not a fan of Star Trek.

I played Elder Scrolls Online over the summer, and I thought it was fun...it's not exactly a revolutionary game, and it's not as flexible or immersive as Skyrim, but it's a solid fantasy MMO that you don't have to pay a monthly subscription on. The only reason that I quit playing it was that I reached a point where the game wasn't as fun as a solo player.

In terms of EVE, there are plenty of specialized newbie corps which dominate the new-player scene and help people get started in the game. And from what I can tell, most veteran players highly recommend joining one.

There's another quite interesting, and rather unconventional MMO out there: Initium. Browser-based, text-based fantasy roguelike (ie permadeath) with a player-driven economy. Also playable at school/work/phone.
