  • So after the conversations in the topic "EVE Online to go Free to Play" I decided to once again subscribe to EVE Online ^-^ It had been some time since I played it. So I have given it a few days and I gotta say I'm really enjoying my time there. :) When I started I did have the goal of at least slightly documenting my travels so that's what I'm trying (to start) to do here. :)

So I started out in the quite detailed character creator and made my character:
    My Character
tried to make her look as cool as myself ;) don't know how well I did. 8)
You also gotta create a portrait to represent your char most of the time, here's mine:
    My Portrait
You also have to pick a race, a history and a school. I picked Gallente, miner, and the Center of Advanced studies; the school you pick is where you have your tutorials, your first home base, and most importantly your first corporation.

Did the tutorial fairly easily :) it's pretty good at explaining how things work, after that it advises you to do some missions for the corporate agents of your school. Most of the corporations in the game have agents who will provide missions paying a small amount of isk (the ingame currency) and loyalty to their corp. The basic school missions are pretty good, giving you a bunch of free ships and equipment and giving you a taste of what the game has to offer, however they can drag on for a bit so I settled on (you guessed it) a career in mining and industry. :))

I (accidentally) bought a nice mining ship the "Venture"
    My Ship
and immediately started out doing some agent missions and mining, I decided a good idea would be to mine in "low sec" zones... these are systems without the Police Units "CONCORD" protecting pilots... the reason I went there was because that's where the really valuable ores were and I wanted that big money. :))
Suffice to say as soon as I enter the first asteroid belt I find I get immediately annihilated from the universe by another player, who was barely even in my scanning range, my first death; very far from glorious.
(sorry I don't have any screenshots but I was terrified and forgot about documenting) :))

Anyway I come to the realization that low sec isn't for me, and while you can still get killed high sec, it's hard to do so without getting a big bounty on your head. So I begin mining there and doing some more missions for the odd corporation... ofcourse it isn't completly free from the occasional AI attack...
    Ow, so much damage, lol
I also censored the chat a little :P

This goes okay but as I'm doing these missions I realize that my newbie school corp is charging a 10% tax! on all my mission pay bonuses and large transactions... so one day while I'm mining a recruiter approaches me and makes me an offer I can't refuse, to join their corp "Corwan Academy" and mine for them except their tax is 0.2% and they especially pay more for ore ^-^ a match made in heaven.

I move a lot of my stuff to their headquarters, a gigantic station in an isolated high sec system.
    Corwan Academy
The HQ's name btw? ".2% tax!!!", no seriously that's it's whole name. :))

Now I've been working for them for a while, making about 500,000 isk each ore run, which I didn't think was bad; but one member of the corp hits me up one day, says she needs a lotta veldspar (the cheapest and most common ore) for a project and she'd like to contract me to mine and ship it. :) Oh, what's that? you want to know how much? 30,000,000isk worth... yeah... 30 million isk just more than double all the money I'd made in the game up to this point :o

It's 36 runs in my little ship, 1,785,000 units of ore, I was shocked but I accepted anyway and boom, cash. :D
    Cash!
Spent ages working on that one, but it was well worth it.

[As a quick aside, a fun fact about the EVE Economy is everything on the market is being bought, sold, made and shipped by players, most buy and sell orders are made by players (not AI shopkeepers or whatever)...
As an example take my ship, the ore needed to make it needed to be mined by a miner, then traded to someone who would reprocess the ore into materials, then someone would make those materials into the ship, which would likely need to be sold somewhere so then they'd pay a hauler, trader or contract a courier to ship the goods to their final point of sale... of-course the same person could do it all, but usually its separate people because that way it's faster and more efficient; with different characters specializing in separate areas and with different ships.]

With that in mind, after I deliver my ore and am going back to regular mining (now with much better gear) I hear some unfortunate news over the chat and have to decide to drop everything and skedaddle... turns out there's a big incursion in the system I was mining in, and even though it's high sec it's about to light up like a battlefield...
    GTFO!
during this a convoy transporting missile pods belonging to my corp to a big buyer is attacked by pirates and we lose most of our security ships and the cargo in the exchange, reinforcements were delayed because of they were working on the incursion... Now we are working on recouping the loses, and our corp has put a large bounty on the heads of each of the pirates.

So that's what's been going on in EVE, I'll hopefully post a further update in a few days after some more stuff happens... also note I'm writing this at 2 in the morning, so sorry if the pacing and tone is a little off, just felt in the mood to write it down. :)

  • Well he's right in regards to trying to do it lone wolf style, which a lotta people do, but I have mined in low sec since with my corp and when there is 10 ships, several on dedicated (shoot first ask questions later) gaurd duty it's very rare anyone causes you bother.

Theres also more micro in mining if you get into it, with drones, fleet bonuses and using several ships, it's not just pressing F1...
Plus I do like to be have some time to crunch the market numbers to find out which ore is best to sell at that time and where.

I think mining is very fun and rewarding :) and its actually pretty important for the game economy, though it definitely isnt for everyone.

Also I get the video is mostly a joke, I thought it was really funny and rewound it and watched to the end :D thanks!
