Honestly it's a beneficial move for both sides.  Opening up multiplayer for multiple consoles gives people who have a certain console more reason to play, since even then they'd still get to play with their friends on PC or the console opposite of theirs.

In a way, it encourages people to buy the games for the system they have, rather than having to shift to a specific console that they don't have just so they can play with their friends.

At this point in time, I don't think Sony has too much to worry about.  Have you seen the prototype projector they're working on at the moment?  They're clearly focusing on other things since the playstation is doing pretty well.

If I were Sony's CEO or whatever, I wouldn't toss any advantage away, which is what this is. But I for one am happy as a consumer. Now I just need to get myself some internet.

I don't think they're tossing anything away right now.  PS4 already has cross-network games such as Rocket League, as the article mentioned.  Likewise, they've been big onto cross-platform play since the Vita's starting days, since many vita games are cross-compatible with PS3 and 4 games.
