  • What are some moments that made you cry in a game?

Due to the fact I expect most of these to be spoilers, please use spoiler tags and put the name of the game on or above the button so we don’t ruin major plot points for players! If you wanna respond to what someone said that’s fine just try to be mindful. Thanks~

    Stardew Valley
Shane’s cliff scene during his 6 heart event I think. It was small but having been in his shoes, seeing it in what is otherwise a pretty happy game hit me like a ton of bricks.

    Telltale’s The Walking Dead
I could pick so many different moments from this but when Clementine had to shoot Lee I almost stopped playing entirely. I knew it was coming and that shit still made me cry.

Just like read Thanes message to a femshep partner character.

    Siha,

I write this with a heavy hand, knowing you will read this letter when I am no longer able to share my thoughts. I am dying, Siha. Perhaps because of the differences between our species, I can hope that time will treat you with kindness and dim the hurt of my passing to faded recollections that a drell would forever remember with perfect clarity.

Selfishly, however, I could not leave this world without leaving a piece of me behind that would never fade.

I once accepted my fate. Nothing remained but a shell destined to die. I only had to choose the when and how of my passing. I had refused to be confined to a bed, gasping horribly as my life beeped away to machinery I had no use for. I thought of my Irikah, broken, bloodied, and betrayed by my absence. Of Kolyat, small and afraid, bravely pushing at his eyes to stem the flow of tears I had entrusted to him to cry… for both our sakes.

The expectation to move swiftly to my end vanished upon meeting with your cause. You awoke me, Shepard. My heart quickened its sluggish beat if only to remain at your side and protect you with everything that I am. I was simply content to watch, take the time left given and praise all I know for allowing me to walk my final days with hope and certainty that I am worthy of more than my cold isolation, solely because you believed.

I love you. If all else whispers back into the tide, know this for fact. By grace given me by the Goddess Arashu, I bid her divine protection to you, my warrior-angel, my Siha, to succeed in your destiny. To light your path through the coming darkness. To give you hope, when all seems lost.

I will await you across the sea.

    Thane

Like... forever ouch. I couldn't play for weeks and literally bawled after reading it. In my current run through the remaster is the thing I fear going through again the most.

    Me for TWD same.

All of the canon games (I haven’t played Machele yet lol) every time I cry, no matter the ending. Seeing Clem cry over the death of Kenny/Jane and Lee always strikes a cord with me. In A New Frontier when David died I kinda cared but DANM IT when I watch Gabe die I start bawling my eyes out, I don’t even like Gabe. You already know in The Final Chapter I started crying. The end of the series grew up with ending so beautifully hit me.

  • TW: Genocide, Murder and Nazis. Spoilers for HOI4: The New Order
I was recently playing Hearts of Iron 4's The New Order mod, its a mod with a premise based on a German victory in WW2. So much of the game has really dark and sad moments, moments that can really tug at your heartstrings, for example:

"Though the men and woman of the Polish homeland fought with everything they had, Poland is lost. Perhaps this time forever."

For me, though, the moment that legit made me tear up was, oddly enough, the end of Reinhard Heydrich if you play his path.

You begin the game playing as one of the biggest monsters in real life history. You see him for what he is, a monster. A ruthless, brutal monster willing to murder millions upon millions to achieve what he wants. From the start of the German Civil War in the game, you must do brutal, horrible things to win. And, when you win, you find out the truth about your boss and mentor, Himmler. Yes, that Himmler.

He wants to nuke the world in some crazy, deranged scheme to make some sort of 'aryan paradise' in a post-apocalyptic world. You oppose him and begin a second civil war where you desperately try to stop Himmler before he destroys the world. As you do, you make allies with some of the very people Heydrich and Nazism not just oppressed, but tried to genocide, such as Polish partisans.

And when you finally win, Heydrich realizes everything was a lie and it was all for nothing. Everything he believed, everything he did, was for nothing. He destroyed his family, who all hate him, his country, which is now a ruin, and himself, all for nothing. He is beyond even a hope for redemption and he cancels his subscription to life magazine.

I teared up not because I sympathized or even felt bad for Heydrich because I don't, he was a monster and he got what he deserved, both in game and in real life. I cried because, for the first time in my life, I truly comprehended the crimes of Nazi Germany.

I intellectually knew the scale of it, the war and its effects, the 12 million civilians they murdered. But going through Heydrich's path, I was introduced to the nitty gritty of it, the details and the frankly inhumane banality of it all. Heydrich ordering the hanging an innocent teenage girl for the 'crime' of being the child of an enemy with the casual vibe of a man ordering take out for lunch, a close up view of what life is really like in a camp, the casual brutality of the Nazi ideology, that came into focus for me.

And, on top of it all, what it does to the people it purports to want to 'help'. It makes people like Abba Kovner, a broken man who has lost everything, even the will to live beyond a burning desire to avenge his people, crushed under the boot of their evil. It makes people like that teenage girl, innocent victims caught up in things beyond their control and who suffer brutal, senseless death and depravity. And it makes people like Reinhard Heydrich or Heinrich Himmler, people willing and able to commit atrocities on unthinkable scales only to end up as broken husks or insane, genocidal madmen.

Nazism, Fascism, supremacist and genocidal ideologies like that victimize everyone. The people they target, the people caught in it, even the perpetrators (though they get and deserve no sympathy for what they did. They had a choice, the people they brutalized did not). For the first time, I comprehended the crimes of Nazi Germany, the sheer evil of it all. And, I admit, I wept.
I Hope You Have A Nice Day :]

  • I play mostly sandbox games that either have no story or I don't really pay much mind to the story but I thought I would share one moment that made me tear up that was entirely made from my own interactions.

    Spoiler
In ark you face off against multiple bosses. I was doing a play-through of all the story maps in order and I breed up a pair of wolves, one black and one white. I named them yin and yang and they faced off against all the bosses on the island, scorched earth, and all the way through aberration up to the Rockwell fight at the end. In that last fight both ended up dying in the fight, the only two to die, mainly to my poor management of their health and keeping them away from the boss. I was devastated by their loss, I wanted to take them all the way to the end of extinction and I couldn't help but tear up. I think the worst part was I knew I could have done better and kept them alive.
