Proposal for Community Cup Contest

  • Sign-ups for the upcoming Arena game have made me realize...man, we really need to focus on and recognize the people who build things in the community and who take part in them. That seems pretty damn obvious when you put it on paper, but it’s easy to forget when things are bustling and you have a lot of people taking part in things. It simply becomes normal, even though more people are putting in more time than ever to make it that way.

We have ways to recognize people already, and they’re all important in their own way, but a lot of them can be very subjective or reflect more on how much people are around or how popular they are rather than what they’re involved with in the community. What if we had a contribution contest, where people would get points for building or being part of something in Wintreath?

For example, maybe we could award 5 points in this contest for hosting a forum game, and 2 points for being part of it. Then at the end of the season someone would win and it’d be reset for the next season. We could award points for everything from writing articles to recruiting. We could extend it to families by adding up the points of their members. We could open it up to non-Citizens to include our many guests who take part in our culture at this point. There's probably a lot of things we could do with it if we thought of them.

My original inspiration for this was the old logs defenders would keep of what operations they were a part of, but as I’m writing this I’m realizing that it’s more like the House Cup from Harry Potter. I think it could be a fun way to recognize people who are contributing and encourage others to take part as well. What do you think? Thoughts, ideas, comments...I’d love to hear from you about this idea. :)

  • I like it, and it couldn't hurt to try it out for a couple seasons. All we'd need to do is come up with a points system (unless you're thinking more of an award at will type of thing) and have someone record it, and that's it. Why not?

  • I was thinking a broad point system would work, with some discretion in case someone does something that isn't on the system. If it works out, I can make a system for that, but just starting out I think we can just keep a log. I don't think things are going to be hard to keep track of this summer. :P

  • I like where this is going. 1 point for every 3 recruitments? [you'd almost always be at the top of the list so it could be set lower.

  • Recruitment could play a role into it...we really haven't gotten into the details yet.

  • Bumping this since I awkwardly tried to pitch something similar- still can't believe I missed this entirely. Depending on how the points system and everything worked, this could be a good way to give Houses/families some welcome relevancy within the world of Wintreath, if such a tie-in could be functional. Additionally, Krone could be worked into the system as an additional motivator once more perks are sorted out (for example, what was mentioned here). The top however many members could earn X amount of Krone for their rankings, perhaps they invest in themselves via the game bag, or, ideally, they invest back into the community's culture via Moot's idea. And Krone or not, it opens the door to constructive individual and familial competition and enrichment. If the Houses were involved as well, it could help set the pace for growing quality families over a vast quantity of smaller Houses as well by encouraging activity.

I suppose the standing question is what would earn players points and how many per task would be reasonable?
    X amount for recruitment
X amount for jobs within civil service
X amount for other community enriching activities such as hosting and playing in games, events, roleplays (ideally with a little quality control to avoid spammy posts in the latter two)
X amount for earning an honor of some kind
X amount for earning a monthly top poster distinction
etc etc. with the flexibility to add and take away points as necessary.

And then perhaps a small caveat for behaviors that would not benefit the community. Perhaps you lose some points for being caught cheating in a game like Werewolf or spamming somewhere you shouldn't to try and rack up poster points, etc.

I think between the records already kept on activity in the region and that Jarls/Thanes may keep their own staff that the groundwork is already there. Having a couple keep track of the rest would cover any gaps.

  • Great minds think alike. :P

One thing I wanted to mention is that we can't reward Krone for people performing an action on NationStates. Because Krone can be redeemed for something of monetary value (game keys), doing so would violate NS rules on monetization. That doesn't mean we can't think of some other kind of reward for those, though.

I still think a friendly competition is something worth trying out though...we do keep a record of contributions in Wintreath, though I don't keep track of smaller things like how many icebreakers a Hearthkeeper has posted. It wouldn't be hard for someone to get those, it's just that I've never had reason to take the time to look them up before. :P

I guess the main question is which families would be interested in competing in something like this?

  • Okay, I can’t help myself, I’m sorry. If your house isn’t active right now, apologies. I didn’t want to accidentally leave any house leaders out. Do any of you have any opinions on a system like this/whether or not your families would participate? More info the the comments above.

  • I still like the idea, and I think it's a great way to give familial houses more relevancy. Burdock's in.

  • It seems the next step is to designate the point system and go from there. I'm already keeping some records for the Record, but I'm not sure if I'm up to keeping tabs on many more things. I'm wondering if maybe we should create a position that's dedicated to that.

  • That would probably be wise- I wouldn’t think it’d be too demanding for a volunteer provided they kept tabs with things like the seasonal record and Jarls/Thanes.
