    A Word from the Monarch
The Day of Reconciliation, a Memorial

"'The Day of Reconciliation' is on the twenty-third (23rd) day of February. It recognizes and honors the date of a confrontation between significant members of the region, and the rekindling of old relationships and the beginning of a healing process for the region and community." -from the Wintreath Holidays Act

This year on February 23rd our community was captivated by the imminent invasion of Ukraine, which I wrote about in last week’s edition. However, several years ago we had a reckoning in our own community, one that blew it apart and nearly destroyed it. This period of time is known as the Schism, and is without a doubt the darkest part of our long history so far. The Day of Reconciliation marks the day that everybody involved finally came together despite their suspicions and mistrust and resolved the conflicts involved.

While this day was originally meant to be a celebration of peace and coming together, I believe that it's more appropriate as a memorial. Unfortunately, most of the people involved ultimately left permanently. While in some cases this is due to future events or busy offline lives, I think these events left scars which never fully healed despite our best efforts afterwards. Especially because of that, we owe it to them and to ourselves to remember the lessons of the Schism.

Wintreath is an amazing community, one that I’m proud to lead. However, as the events of the Schism prove, we are not perfect. We (those of us that were there at the time) allowed suspicion to cloud our judgments, we were unwilling to openly communicate with each other, and most importantly we forgot that we are a community of friends. These events didn’t take place between people who were new to Wintreath, or who didn’t believe in our principles, but between members who had been in our community for years and called each other friends.

Including me. As Founder of Wintreath, my greatest role is embodying and protecting the principles that we stand for.. However, during these events I failed to do so. I too forgot that the people on the other side of the conflict were my friends, and because of that I failed them, our community, and the principles that I believe in and stand for. It is my biggest regret involving Wintreath to this day. For me and those who remain, we have very personal reasons to remember those lessons.

However, the years have passed, and we now have many newer Wintreans who were not there when these events happened. If you’re one of them and would like to learn more about this pivotal part of our history (and I hope you do), we are slowly putting together resources for you to learn. Unfortunately they are not complete, but the best way you can honour this day (ableight a bit late) is to learn all that you can about it, take in the lessons learned, and practice them in your own life both here and elsewhere.

A good place to start is our summary of the Schism from the Wintreath History Project here.

    As always, stay frosty.

    The Welcome Wagon
Aloha to our new and returning Citizens!
We have a number of new and returning Citizens this week! So many that I’ve decided to give each one their own section!
    • First off, welcome back to Neon Abigail, who was previously in Wintreath under the name Hapi! She’s actually been back in the community for a while now, but is only now taking the plunge back into the ranks of Citizens. She’s also putting together a new Werewolf game for later this month! You can read more about it and get the link to sign up below in the “What’s Happening Now” section.
    • Also welcome back to Marzipan (New Montith), whose return is an unexpected but welcome surprise, given that they were one of the people who left during the Schism that I discussed earlier (I wrote that section a few days before their return). Before then they were a pillar of the community when Wintreath was at its height, so it’s especially wonderful to have them as part of our community again.
    • Welcome back to Michalak, too! Unfortunately I don’t know as much about him, but it was great to see somebody that wanted to come back after a year away, and hopefully this time we can keep him here for good. I wouldn’t want his return to go unnoticed, so definitely do anything you can to make him feel welcome and make it easy for him to get involved!
    • We also have a new Citizen this week, Lusgastan. They’re especially interested in socializing with the community along with answering NS issues, so be sure to reach out to them and give them a warm welcome!
    • And just before I was about to get this out, we had one last Citizen join us this week: Cadsuane Melaidhrin (The White Tower of Tar Valon)! She heard about Wintreath from others, but has held a number of positions throughout various NationStates regions. It’s a rare honour to have someone with so much experience outside of Wintreath with us, so please welcome her to our community!
If you would like to become a Citizen of Wintreath, all you have to do is join our off-site forum and then fill out this form. Citizens gain full rights under our regional constitution, gain access to Citizen-only areas of the forums and Discord, and can participate in our government from our all-Citizen assembly to the Cabinet that runs the day-to-do operations of Wintreath.

    What's Happening Now
    News from Wintreath
Spring Riksraad (Cabinet) Elections Finish Early!
Due to the fact that there were no competitive elections, all candidates who stood for election won by default and will take office on March 8th. The winners are all incumbents, ensuring a continuation of the current Winter Cabinet: Stigya2113 (The Stigyan Triumvirate) as Thane of Regional Affairs, TGN (The Greenlandic North) as Thane of Embassies, Michi (Penguin Dictators) as Thane of World Assembly Affairs, and Svipjoth as Thane of Roleplay. Congratulations to them!

    Signups Open for Werewolf 26!
Named “A New Adventure in Old London” and hosted by Neon Abigail, this game promises plenty of chaos and unique roles, but also  a post limit to make sure that people can keep up on it all. Werewolf is very similar to games like Among Us and Town of Salem, just through text on our forums, so if you like these sorts of games why not give it a try? Signups are open until March 14th or 18 players have signed up!

Check Out Our New Citizen Handbook!
The new Citizen Handbook has information that may be helpful for Citizens to get involved in Wintreath, including the ideals and principles we stand for, a brief history of the region, our regional currency, professions, and how our government works. Most sections have links for more information for any section you want to know more about, so check it out! There might be something in there even our old-timers don’t know.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs Launches New Ambassador Program
Jarl of Foreign Affairs Ruguo has decided that time to resurrect our ambassador program is now! We’re looking for Citizens interested in representing Wintreath to other communities. This involves joining their forums and Discord, then keeping track of what’ going on there, forwarding their diplomatic requests, posting our dispatches and information, and contributing to our FA dispatch, the Auora Borealis. If you’re interested in becoming an ambassador, please contact them on Discord!

    8-Values Community Results Posted
After receiving quiz results from 18 members, Wintermoot posted the collective results with comparisons to the community results from 2017. Overall, the Wintreath community has become slightly more progressive and much more globalist in the last 5 years. Also, it was discovered that newcomers to the community tended to be more moderate than people who were around to take earlier versions of the survey. Check out the link for the full results!
