Statistics for the Month that Was
    January 2022

    Forums: 1852
    From December 2021: +1484 (+403.3%) | From January 2021: +1246 (+205.6%) | Breakdown: View Here

It's no surprise that forum activity has shot through the roof with a Werewolf game going on. In fact, 9 out of 10 of the top forum posters in the month were people playing the Werewolf game. However, there are some other pleasant surprises if you look deeper in the data. Even without the Werewolf game, forum activity still would have rose for a fourth consecutive month, to 471 posts. The impact of reposting NationStates RMB icebreakers is starting to be felt, as the Howling Wind Tavern saw its best month since May 2020. There was also the conclusion of the Spyfall game, the continuing Mage Wars game, and plenty of forum spam that contributed to those numbers.

Overall, it's not just the numbers themselves that are positive, but the diversity of where they're coming from: general discussion and multiple forum games. With the imminent resurrection of the Roleplayers' Guild, I hope we can add RP to that list very soon.

With the new year comes a change in how we report Discord statistics.

One of the things that came from the aftermath of the Schism was the rise of bots. We've had Zaphyr since the IRC days, but at the end of the Schism we felt that bots could help resolve the moderation issues that had been problematic in that era. In that mindset, Dyno joined our bot army, followed by Logger and Carlos sometime later. Our comfort with bots has only grown since, culminating with the introduction of the Wintreath MC bot in December, which allows people on Discord and the Minecraft server to chat with each other.

Previously in the statistics breakdown, I had tried to separate discussion channel totals (tracked channels) from non-discussion channels (either channels like announcements or channels that only bots posted in like the log channels). However, as we come to rely more on bots it's become harder to do so. How would you categorize the minecraft channel under the old system?

Therefore, statistics will continue to include the grand total of all Discord posts, but will also include a breakdown between bot and human activity. Ultimately, we have to recognize that the purpose of our stats is to look into how to improve human activity. While bots can certainly help with that (Zaphyr's CAH games, for instance), it is misleading at this point not to separate them out, especially as bots now regularly represent over 20% of the activity on the server. I have gone back and included this information for the past year, from January 2021 onward. As time allows I would like to go back and fill 2019 and 2020 as well, as I think it would really show the complete story of how bots have become prominent on our Discord.

    NationStates RMB: 1781
    From December 2021: +258 (+16.9%) | From January 2021: -1441 (-44.7%) | Breakdown: View Here

After a few months of slight declines, the RMB picked up a little bit in January, rising to its highest activity in several months. This is thanks to a mixture of roleplay activity, daily icebreakers, and weekly bonfire events. An interesting note is that the top 10 posters list is dominated by nations belonging to WARPP: at this point 7 out of the top 10 posters belong to that organization (based on the Ministry of Regional Affairs' Registration List).

    Median Citizen Age: 24
    From November 2021: +2.0 | From November 2020: N/A | Breakdown: View Here

After a brief decline in December, median Citizen age returned to where it was before, with the average also going back to where it was in November (25.2). In fact, the statistics show that there are hardly any Citizens under the age of 21 (at least among those who have put a birthday in their forum profile). This could mean that our younger Citizens aren't as likely to provide that information, or that the Wintreath community continues to age.

  • Wouldn't it be worth considering the Wintreath MC bot as also primarily human-generated activity, as it's being generated by Minecraft players?

  • @taulover: I had thought about it, but ultimately it's not human-generated Discord activity. It would be like posting Discord chats to the forums and calling it forum activity.

It's an interesting metric on how often people are talking on the Minecraft server, but even there I'm not sure it's a good measure of Minecraft activity since chatting isn't the main purpose of the server. If there are five people building and exploring but not chatting with each other, it's not really a good metric of the use people are getting out of the server.
