Proposing The Vault: Game Selection for Werewolf Hosts

  • When you host a game a strategy game you don't have to make your own map, so why do Werewolf hosts have to make their own game? On the other hand, throughout our 29 Werewolf games, our hosts have designed some really great games, so why must they sit on a shelf after being played just once?

The answer to both questions is: there is no good reason besides that's the way it's always been done. And that's why I'm proposing The Vault.

The Vault would be a collection of Werewolf themes submitted by their designer so others could use them for their own games. It would include all the roles, game mechanics, and anything else a host would need to know to run the game themselves. The host could then choose to either run the game out of the box or use the theme as a template to make changes and add their own flavour. Either way, the host would be required to give proper credit to the original designer in their own game. Ultimately, hosts could run a game without necessarily having to build their own theme while showcasing themes that in some cases were last played years ago.

It would be a win for hosts, a win for designers, and a win for our Werewolf scene. :)

  • That sounds like a neat idea. Would be a great way to get double-elimination Werewolf or Werewolf with more than two factions tried again, both of which I've wanted to see since I did them in Werewolf XIV, but also will likely not ever host again considering my activity level and how put off I am by the game currently.

The post limits in Lil' Werewolf haven't made you any less put off?

    Unfortunately, not really.

Would you care to elaborate? Are the post limits too high for you, or is there some other aspect of the game/scene that's put you off?

I still get the feeling that there's been a fundamental cultural shift in how Werewolf is being played here in Wintreath. I think part of it might be the way I'm being treated for my current activity level; i.e. not really having the time or energy to participate but doing so out of a sense of obligation when getting repeatedly pinged by more active players about it, and when that feels more like work than fun then I don't think it's best to participate in the future.

How are you being treated? I'm not part of the current game, but I skimmed over the last few pages and found Vro's selective quoting that you had an issue with. Is that what you're talking about? Every game has players who are less active but not inactive...I'm usually one of them, so I'm concerned if you feel you're not being treated right because of your activity level and would like to know more.

It's probably not fair to blame other players for playing the game the way that they want/are used to. It perhaps might also be a change in my own life and relationship with games and communities like these.

I think it's more that I don't have the time/energy, but I will feel the urge to return if prompted, and when other players realize that it sets up an unhealthy cycle.

I think I haven't noticed this before because in recent years I've usually gotten killed before I'm able to be invested in the game.

  • Let me ask you this...what would a satisfying Werewolf game be to you? Is there such a thing, or are you saying you don't have the time or energy for Werewolf no matter what kind of game it was?

I would like to make it so that we can be a great place to play games for all different kinds of people, and obviously at this point we have a group of people who are willing and able to put in hours of time into each game day and people who aren't, and I'm hoping the casual league games will be better for people like us who just can't devote that much time into a game. I'm interested in seeing how the playerbase splits too...who will primarily play the casual games and who will primarily play the tryhard games, cause that'll give each version its own flavour as well. Maybe in the casual scene there won't be the same pressure to be more active.

I'm honestly not sure, that might require further reflection. I think it's a combination of how the game has changed and how I have changed and my current circumstances, but how much each factors in I'm not sure.

In terms of the casual league stuff, please try to tailor it to those more interested. For the time being I don't think I will be playing more Werewolf. Perhaps host, though I've always strayed away from that after seeing how many people are lined up to host future games. I think I'll put more of my game time in Wintreath toward Minecraft and Arena (assuming Kane gets his game done).
