FarmVille, the game that either addicted or annoyed everyone on Facebook a decade ago, has shut down. The New York Times has a full article about it here.

For those who liked FarmVille, it was a fun and casual timesink they could play with friends in a space where they all already were. For those who hated it, it was barely a game, made money by encouraging obsessive behaviours from their players, and constantly pestered everyone on Facebook whether they were playing the game or not. Love it or hate it, you can't deny the impact of FarmVille on the gaming world, especially in casual and mobile games. As the NYT put it: "FarmVille Once Took Over Facebook. Now Everything is FarmVille".

FarmVille is the reason 12-year-old me begged my mother for a Facebook account. After months of nagging her, my mother let me sign up and I played FarmVille for about a year. Haven't touched it since.

Farmville single-handedly drove me off Facebook. It was the herald to all the other daft shit Facebook was going to become known for.

Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say.

Gah, that game.  I had an ex who was obsessed with checking his farm every waking moment, and would call his mom to have her visit his farm.

Naturally, I could never get into it myself.

I joined Facebook right as FarmVille was getting big...I tried it out, dedicated a few hours a day to playing it for two months, then got burned out and never played it again. It didn't help that I didn't have many Facebook friends so I could never really advance like others could. I know people who seriously put hundreds of dollars into that game to buy stuff for their farm.

I had a phase in my life when I was active on facebook. Until I lost access to my facebook account, either becuase I used a fake name there and got reported, or because I lost my password and was too lazy to retrieve it, I used to eat, drink and breathe facebook.

FarmVille was a part of it for some of my time there. I spent a few pennies on it, as I usually do on games I like, but not too much.

Nowadays I have a brand-new facebook account (under my real name) which I barely touch. FarmVille is but a faded memory. Such is life.

Most people are in that category nowadays...I think most people have just gotten tired of Facebook. I haven't added any friends to mine in about 2 years, and the few times I check few of my friends ever post either. Most people seem to just mindlessly share posts, which makes Facebook even more boring and makes me want to check it again even less, lol.

It may still make a lot of money, but I think most people are over Facebook.
