Title: Optional Residency Requirement?
Post by: Wintermoot on August 15, 2016, 01:29:53 AM
Just an off-the-wall idea...what if we modified the Citizenship requirement to be maintaining a nation in the region OR making at least 10 posts in the last calendar month? I'm not sure there's a real benefit, but it might be helpful to people who are no longer really interested in NS...and maybe if we got future members that aren't into NS, this would help them too.

Admittedly, I don't think it's a good idea. It's not difficult to log onto NS every few days, and I don't want to detract from our roots. I'm not very active on the main site, but we are ultimately based from said site, and if this bill were passed, it would only weaken the links between it and the main forums. And as such, there would be little progress in expanding ties between the two sections of our community, because many people would not even be aware the other side exists.

But what if at some point we get people from elsewhere? Or people that aren't interested in NS?

As someone who's often finding their time too divided between real life and other commitments to really get into NS again, I can see the logic behind a proposal such as this; that said, Barnes is very true in that NS is where our roots arise from and as such probably where we stand the greatest chance of attracting more members likely to be active from (any other games etc we'd need the forum and play architecture there to attract and keep members, whereas NS we're pretty geared up for already). Tough call, really.

Well, it's a difficult thing to comment on. Barnes makes an excellent point, and although my own interests would lie in expanding the region beyond its NS roots (since we are, after all, more of an online community than a NS region, and since I'm one of those who can no longer be bothered to maintain a NS region), the effort to do so could drive us further away from any sort of NS interaction. Is it really fair to have people in the cabinet who don't interact with the actual NS page at all?

If we do this, we're declaring that the forum is not synonomous with the actual NS region, but an entity all its own. At that point, we would become an online community that merely happens to have a few ties with the NS region it spawned from.

It was just an idea...I would like to eventually expand away from NS, but I suppose we haven't reached that point yet.

Hmm, I hope I didn't sound harsh...

I can see this as a logical step if we're moving outside of just NS since we're not really NS-focused anyway, and it's completely fine by me. As Weissreich pointed out, though, where would we draw new members from? This is the only online community I've ever been a part of, so I don't really know how that normally works.
