Greetings Wintreath! It is I, Meintapah! It's such a beautiful day today that I had a stroke of inspiration! I know there were plans for an un-official region map, but it never hit the table. So today I propose the development of the map! Of course, this map could be of our Earth or randomly generated terrain.
I have been spending time researching different programs and I will be trying some to see which works the best. But before I do, I need to know a few things..
- Do you have a program you think may help the process?
- Do you want to be involved in the program?
- Do you want to be on the map?
- Any other ideas that you may have?
Once these plans have been finalized, I will contact people such as Point Breeze or Wintermoot for help. My current plan is to include nations that want to be included. If so, your nation will be assigned land according to influence, population, and overall status.
If you wish to be involved or want to be in the map, please comment your region name if not specified and I will begin the collection of data soon. The map will most likely be updated every 6 months depending on demand and politics of the region.
Good luck to all those who are preparing to sit exams!
Yours truly,
Jack the XXIII.

Thanks for doing this! I'll direct you to the previous regional map discussion, and I'll help in any other way that I can. I admit, I'm no good with actually putting the map together, but really anything else!
There's not much here, but these are the relevant map-related topics I've found.

Also, @Anneleise mentioned she's drawn and designed maps before, so she might take interest in this as well.

Thank you. From what I can see, I have the same ideas as in the past. I'll PM her and see what we can do!

Okay, however can I please ask that you don't try and push it as the official Wintreath Map? I mean I'd rather there be no actual official map for Wintreath period due to the fact that certain maps may only be useful for certain things. Besides the World of Wintreath is essentially up to each citizen to decide in their own mind...even the cannon of Wintreath is somewhat debatable when it comes to RP.
Although for programs I just use GIMP to hand-draw my maps.

There we go, all changed :)

I foresee trouble with using population counts. Will land expand with the population growth? If so, what happens when countries grow into each other?
I've seen countless regions pour time and energy into maps, and never seen anyone completely satisfied.
Also, Point Breeze, that's @Anneliese. :)

Hi @jackl01, welcome :)
I have been trying to get nation-based RP going, and such a map would be useful. Aside from the threads linked above, I would suggest coordinating with myself and @Anneliese. I would to use such a nation-based map for Wintreath nation RP.
I look forward to working with you both :)

As population in Nation States rises at a semi-constant rate (only varying randomly between some set values) it is not the best determination of nation size. :P
I would suggest possibly forum activity :) . My idea would work like this you draw the entire region and have it "set in stone" that whole area can't change. Then you take that land and divide it up roughly via forum activity. By making a guess at % of forum activity = a guess of % of land occupied in the region, you would get a map not determined by age, but by "influence".... Of course you wouldn't use actual numbers just rough guesses :)
I realise there are some large holes in this as with any idea, but if the map was updated every now and again like every month or 2, I think it would represent the region much better than one divided by "national" population. So the map instead of displaying a region with several conflicting nations on it would look more like a semi-feudal country with territory of allegiance to someone or other changing hands with influence and politics as well as war. :D
I also think this would encourage activity in the forums.
I don't know, it's just an idea, and as I say I am sure it has it's host of problems, it's up to you if you think it would be good. Anyone, feel free to criticize. :)
Also a few years ago I worked helping to make relief maps, it might not be what your looking for in this but if it is, give me a shout :D

I've made maps for NS before and I'd be glad to be of help. I use a mix of Photoshop and Inkscape to come up with maps that are "wikipedia styled". :)
-
I like the concept of a map based on forum activity, but I'm not sure how well it could be implemented.
-
I could be down if there were enough activity. Not really my usual cup of tea, but I won't turn anything down.

What about invasions?

They should account for that in terms of population

I don't follow...

Any map that shows territory will also have to account for possible invasion of nearby territory
-
You mean military invasions? That's a RP type of event. If this is a non-RP map, then it shouldn't matter.

Hopefully we'll sort this out :)

I think what laurentus is saying is that this map isn't supposed to be a map for any nation RP. Those will have their own maps.

^This.

How so? It wasn't clear

First off, I'm not making the map, so what I'm about to say may not jive with Meintapah's wishes.
This map is just supposed to be a fun, not-serious representation of Wintreath for those of us who want to casually role play geographic features of our nation and how they fit in with the rest of the region. Normally, "regional maps" are such. Maps for nation based RP are created according to who the players are, what the OP wants, etc. Basically, stuff matters more.
-
I don't know if it matters for these purposes, but Weissreich hand-drew a regional map with geography and cities on it. It's somewhere on the forums here...
-
Aye, here's the link to Weissreich's post (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=2276.msg34261#msg34261) and the link to the image of the map (http://i.imgur.com/Doubtka.jpg) itself.

Yes it is for his city RP :)
-
Sorry about the confusion! As stated above, I had planned to just do it for fun, but if in theory the idea does work out, I'm sure some kind of RP map could be created.

This is also a good idea! We don't have to stick to one map if the idea gets up and running. We can have 1 just like you said, "set in stone" and it may never change. We can also have a type of interactive map where players can fight, as if it's a real world war. If anyone wishes to discuss this further, I'm always open to some feedback and awesome ideas such as thus!
