Title: Ask Me Anything: Anneliese
Post by: Anneliese on June 04, 2015, 05:56:32 AM
Alright.  I'm new here, but I'm definitely not shy.  I was told to jump into the general discussion, and this was the first thing I saw, so I figured this was as good a way as any to kind of introduce myself to you guys.  So, I suppose the name already covers this, but feel free to ask me anything!

/me waves

I am so glad you're putting yourself out there...a lot of new people get shy or intimidated, and we never see them after they post their Citizenship app. It's sad cause...well, as close-knit as we are here, we need new friends to become an even better community...but enough of my reflections. :P

I suppose first thing first! What are you looking for in NationStates and from your region?

What language is your name?

@Wintermoot - I love politics and roleplaying, so I suppose I'm looking for some combination of those.  As we discussed, I'm pretty keen on learning more about families on NationStates.  I've heard they're insanely hard to keep track of.

@Govindia - Yes!  And proudly so!

@Laurentus - My name is German.  In High German, it would be pronounced AH-nuh-LEE-zuh, but the regional dialect my parents speak pronounces it more like uh-nuh-LAY-zuh, so that's how I like it!  Though it's always interesting for me to think about names being in certain languages, since they are the same no matter what language I'm speaking.

Ah, I thought so. As a South African, we learn High German at school (if we choose to learn German at all), so it was strange to see you describe the pronunciation in that way.

How do you find life in America as someone of direct German descent?

I was born in the States, and only lived a few years of my life in Germany, though I usually go there over the summer.  It's definitely a different culture.  I'm not going to say I prefer one over the other, since I think a place is what you make of it.  I wish belief in the old gods was more prevalent in the States.   They're pretty legit!

That escalated quickly.

You don't ask a woman @tatte, if she has a dick in her lederhosen man.  Maybe she could have a snake in her pocket, or an actual piece of sausage.

Also wait, isn't sauerkraut just cabbage ?

I am 23 and why are you thinking about what's in my leather pants?  ;)

Not to mention that only guys wear lederhosen traditionally.  While I do love sauerkraut on my bratwurst, it's really not a current stereotype.  We are all about the curry these days.  If you're ever in Berlin, try the Currywurst.

I loved Hardhome.  I don't know where anyone is with the books, so I shan't discuss them.  But yeah the episode really put the petty squabbles of Westeros into perspective.

And thank you for the family info!

If I get excited it comes out pretty heavily.  Some people say they hear it but I don't think I have an accent.

I prefer it already in the ketchup myself.  Especially if it was made by someone who knew what they were doing.

I have this strange thing where I can no longer speak any language apart from German with a slight accent. Even my native language, Afrikaans, has a slight English-German accent, while my English has a slight Afrikaans-German accent. I think I can speak Latin with the proper accent, but I'm not sure. My French is just terrible when I try to speak it. Not that I can speak much of it.

And I've also realised that people aren't always completely aware of their accents. There isn't anything wrong with having an accent, it just shows that you've got a rich linguistic history. :P

How did you end up being born in America and living there?
Title: Ask Me Anything: Anneliese
Post by: Anneliese on June 04, 2015, 08:38:28 PM
My parents are from East Berlin.  They came over after the wall fell and had me.  After some time when things started to pick back up in Berlin, my father was given a promotion to run a plant there.  So I lived there for a while. We still spend summers there though.  Well not this summer since I got a job here. :(

Well, when life gives you lemons...

Perhaps you can explore some local parts that you don't often get to explore on the weekends? I've found that some epic adventures can be found right around the corner from my house when I look properly.

That said, which locations of Germany have you visited?

I lived in Berlin, so most of the area around there. We would go to the Black Forest sometimes and that was cool. Saw a game in Allianz Arena, got to vacation in Amsterdam.  Been to most of the major cities, though the string of cities on the western border I don't really remember. I was pretty young them.

That's  cool.

I was born in Singapore to my family and we moved to the States when I was two months old.  I lived mainly in the midwest and east coast.  After university, the job (when I had good work) moved me to the Left Coast.

Ich habe keine Kartoffelkatzen.  Und dass tut mir sehr leid.  Aber Menschen die auf Deutsch verfassen saugeil sind.

I'm going to say mercy.  Since justice rarely truly exists.

And your cat is ADORABLE!!  And its name is Bacon.  Two of my favorite things!  As far as something you can assist me with, yeah I'd love to figure out where everything is with RPs.  Are there any up and running?  Are there any that need some leg work?  I know you need maps, and I'm great with hand drawn maps and fractal drawn maps.  Anything else?

Post by: Laurentus on June 05, 2015, 01:42:51 AM
That was actually a good answer. But let me trip you up a bit. :P

Surely a serial killer and rapist should be put away out of mercy to his next potential victims? And yet that is also justice. Can the argument then be made that the two are opposites and exist in vacuums?

Und für eine leichtere Frage noch einmal, welcher Gefühl hat das folgende Wort zu entlocken: Kaninchen?

EDIT: I struggled quite a bit there with my German. It's become very rusty.

Another question:

Are you going to respond back to the people who replied on your Citizenship/Intro thread? :P

Can you translate all the German that's on here since there is no auto translator? :P
Title: Ask Me Anything: Anneliese
Post by: Anneliese on June 05, 2015, 02:37:51 AM
First, Laurentus.

Is putting a rapist or serial killer away justice?  I'm not so sure.  I have a really hard time saying that it is.  In fact, IMO justice is only found when someone is undone by their own wrong action.  Of course then you have to add in circumstantial morality.  If someone was doing something wrong for the right reason, is it just for them to be punished?  I'm not sure.

What I am sure about is mercy.  In my life, I practice mercy, not justice.  The flaming sword is not mine to wield.

And as for Kaninchen - fear.  Why?

This is why
(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fstatic.comicvine.com%2Fuploads%2Foriginal%2F11%2F113883%2F3828805-5999894397-kille.jpg&hash=aff9234959814d418bbf23b102f63589)

Now Colberius.

Fear vs loved.  That's a great question.  It is in my nature to tend toward loved.  But I think a true leader will inspire greatness from those around her.  And I think true leaders will not be so caught up on being loved that they can't make the hard decision because at the end of the day she should think about her people and what is best for them, rather than what is best for her image and legacy.

Pie.  Unless it's pound cake.

Govindia

I will respond, yes.  I can translate any German you need translated.  :3

And for another more light-hearted question: who should be the king/queen of Westeros if looked at meritocratically, and not according to laws of succession? A brief explanation would be welcomed.

Wow so many questions.

Werewolf?  Do tell.

Varys should be King of Westeros if based only on the merits of living characters.  I can explain more later, but right now I'm trying to balance dinner and this response.

If you compile all the German on this forum, I will translate it for you all in one go.

And here (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=1619.msg0#new) is the basic premise of Werewolf. It's quite challenging to try and survive long enough to win, and you'll become very paranoid before the end, but it's incredible fun.

I thought you might have already stumbled upon one, as one of the themes was Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which can be found here (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=2262.0).

High fantasy doesn't acknowledge this world.  Low fantasy does.  Low fantasy (in my book at least) includes Urban fantasy and fantasy that takes place in worlds similar.

High Fantasy
Game of Thrones
Lord of the Rings
Wheel of Time
Eragon

Low Fantasy
Harry Potter
Chronicles of Narnia
American Gods
Series of Unfortunate Events

As for reading my work..........maybe ;)

Have you ever heard of a series called The Farseer Trilogy? The writer, Robin Hobb, is actually good friends with George R.R. Martin, and it is amazing how their works inspire each other.

And as for the reading: please? ;)

Though in all seriousness, I understand if you'd rather not. I can only imagine how many people's ideas have been stolen that way.

Also, who are your favourite writers?

EDIT: You keep nasty chips.

I have not heard of this trilogy, but I wrote it on my reading list!

And like I said...maybe ;)

My favorite writers:

Tolkien.
Neil Gaiman definitely.
Lemony Snicket is the best wordsmith alive.
Paolo Coelho
Ernest Hemingway
Shakespeare
Ayn Rand
Aldous Huxley
Douglas Adams

I think that's a good starter list lol

A Series of Unfortunate Events was both beautiful and funny in a horribly depressing sort of way. I loved those books.

I notice Fitzgerald is absent from your list.  ???

I assume you're referring to F. Scott.  No he is not on my list.  Gatsby was alright.

"Alright," she says! :o

If I recall correctly, Hemingway was a master with using as few words to tell a story as possible, which he demonstrated with the following.

"For Sale: Baby Shoes, Never Worn."

That's some skill.

Hemingway is the best.  He follows the rule that I have written on every draft I've ever written:

"Put every word on trial for its life."

Eating steak as a Hindu...Hey man.  Whatever floats your boat!

I can't restrain myself on the first draft. I usually destroy pages worth of words on assignments when I'm done with my first draft, so respect for being able to keep control on your first draft.

I've found that newspaper editors and journalists can really teach many writers of fiction a thing or two about keeping their shit together.

Oh I only use about 10% of what I write in my first draft.  I let it all out and accept it will be terrible.  But then I edit the CRAP out of it.

You may.  In my personal spirituality, I practice Druidry.  I'm a druid in the Order of Bards, Ovates, and Druids.  It is a nature based religion that focuses heavily on using Celtic mythology and astrology to delve into the secrets of the world.

Shamanism is less a religion and more a practice.  I use it to do work with others.  Energy readings, tarot, runes, auras, scrying, etc.  I can do shamanic voyages and other stuff like that.

South Park.  All day.

An Ovate is the second level in OBOD.  It's basically a soothsayer.  In a sense.  There's more to it, but that's the basics of what you learn as an ovate.  I loved it.

I'm surprised @Aragonn hasn't chimed in here, given his own fascination with Norse mythology and culture.

How did you first come to learn about your current spiritual and religious beliefs?
Title: Ask Me Anything: Anneliese
Post by: Anneliese on June 06, 2015, 03:29:42 PM
I was raised Christian, but I never connected.  So one day I thought man.  It would be awesome if I could just go back to the simpler days of the old gods.  So I googled it and found out it was a lot more prominent than people think.  I started with the Norse, and still use them primarily today as my chosen deities.

But Asatru is pretty political and can be really sexist, and I don't like that, so I was looking for something else.  I found Druidry, which I love.  And Shamanism is beautiful.  Overall you could say I'm pretty eclectic.

And yes.  I was thinking of setting up a thread where I could give people readings or rituals etc.

Honestly, I have chimed in yet because I didn't know this thread existed. I'm on two different websites and three different forums as well as having a very active Skype account and playing a lot of games, so excuse me if I haven't explored the entirety of the Wintreath forum yet.

I was raised Christian as well, but like you, I never connected either. It just wasn't for me.

You'd find a lot of homebrew beer, some Cherry Coke, milk, eggs, cheese, cake, ham, turkey, condiments/sauces, leftover mac and cheese, jello shots, kinky, whipped cream, and other increasingly uninteresting things.

I'm allergic to fish.

Lebkuchen is like gingerbread, only German.  For those Americans who like Gingerbread, it's like that just a little less sweet.

My mother is German, along with her side of the family, so I learnt a bit from her, and had it as a subject during school. I'm far from an expert, and on top of that, I'm very rusty, however. Where did you learn it?

EDIT: Also, "zu" should be included in: "... aber was er braucht ist Deutsch *zu* lernen." :P

The rules of German make a bit more sense when coming at it from Afrikaans. :P
