My dad still expects things to be done, and even though he's been assisting me with things, he still acts rude and condescending to me, and refuses to apologise.  He thinks it's ok to pester me and be rude and condescending to me, but call him out on his actions, he's in complete denial >_<

Yeah, me too, but probably for the opposite reason..  :p

Chess is super dated, modern board games are much more fun and have plenty of skill and strategy involved. Kinda like newer video games vs older ones.

Not that I dislike chess, I just wouldn't spend time really playing it.

Yep, totally agree.  Go, on the other hand, is epic as well...

Chess is the epitome of skill and strategy. What a grandmaster sees is insane compared to what I see, and I'm already pretty good. I remember playing in the 2011 Chess Commonwealth tournament in the Emperor's Palace casino in Johannesburg. I had won my first three games against local players whose ratings were much higher than mine, because it had been awhile since I had played in tournaments and they probably completely underestimated me. So in the fourth round, I found myself on board 21 (out of 150-ish boards in the top division) playing against a sixteen year-old Indian grandmaster. She thoroughly destroyed me in the first 13 moves, and from watching her later games, I got the distinct impression she wasn't even using a tenth of her true abilities to deal with me. Needless to say, I was brought down to earth hard after that. The duration of the tournament was a lot easier than that, but I still managed to get only three more points out of the eleven rounds we played, ending somewhere in the middle, still far beyond the expectations of anyone with a rating as low (relatively speaking compared to the rest of the players) as mine at the time. I learnt quickly that I didn't know shit about chess compared to those people. Still, I counted myself lucky to even be playing in such a prestigious tournament.

EDIT: I should mention that as the host country, our players didn't need to qualify to play in the tournament. That's the only reason I was even able to play there. I remember my school paying for our chess team to play in the tournament, figuring it would be phenomenal practice for the upcoming championships.

To each their own I guess. Chess just isn't that fun to me, though i'm all right at it. To me it's just another game.

I love that even after playing chess competitively for 13 years now, there's still worlds of possibility in those 64 squares that I have not, nor that anyone on else on Earth has, even considered. The more I play, the more parts of that beautiful mystery become known to me, and each time I gain some new understanding, I experience a sense of wonder that I can only compare to a high.
