Cliques and social statues aren't really an American thing...they're a human thing.

True, but American cliques have no real meaning to South Africans. Although truth be told, I don't much concern myself with South African cliques to begin with, even though they are there.

You sound like a loner with talk like that.

You know those type of people who don't particularly identify with one clique, but instead makes friends with a few members out of all of them?

That's a loner... What you've just described is a loner... When ya' hang out with people from groups but don't actually hang out with the group? You're a loner.
That or you're "transient" or some other similar title... Where all the groups want you to come hang out with them every day but you just don't... But this seems unlikely. And is also in the end a bad spot to be in...

A loner can also be that and the loner as I described above does lend itself to fewer "friends" than others.

Well, if you consider the great multitude of cliques there are, even if you make one friend out of every clique, you end up with quite a large number of friends, and better yet, a lot of variety. That doesn't translate to loneliness. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Ah, but that is irrelevant... By identifying to a clique, you quickly summarize what you care that people know about you. I have the ability to make instant judgement calls based upon where and what people you hang out with. As a loner, you take that ability away from me...
Loners don't identify with cliques... That's what's most important above all else... Everything else is secondary...

And I posit that 1) you're describing an individual, and not a loner, and 2) that if you accept that people are unique, it is incorrect to believe that you can make a judgement of a person based on what cliques they identify with, with any sort of comprehensiveness or even accuracy.

I believe that dictionary definitions regularly have to be broadened to accept real world applications and that people are hardly unique at all...
