The Next Generation:  IC Thread

Far in the future, and after loss of communication with the USS Wintreath, the first vessel to attempt to map and explore the far reaches of space, the USS Frosthold has been hastily commissioned to find Wintreath's Flagship, at the expense of system debugging and completion of what are considered by the Spacefleet to be "non-essential" systems...

Commanded by Captain T'plail, a headstrong officer graduating first in her class from the Wintreath Space Academy and spent little time on other starships before hastily being appointed to the Frosthold, a consequence of fleet officer reserves stretched thing, as many experienced officers where assigned to the Wintreath for her voyage.  The Fleet Command has searched desperately for a crew willing to take a vessel to the outskirts of known space to determine the whereabouts of the USS Wintreath, and have hastily assembled one, and the crew is now about to embark on the journey of a lifetime....

Wintreath Spacedock

Lai T'plail gazed into the abyss from the Wintreath Spaceport to Dry Dock 17-B, only a glowing speck in the vast emptiness of space from her vantage point.  But she knew that it contained the fruit of all her labours of the past two and a half decades since she resolved, at the age of four, to become a starship captain.

"All Group R Personnel assigned USS Frosthold, please proceed to Shuttle Bay 4 for departure for USS Frosthold.  Group R, Bay 4 for USS Frosthold."

The cool, crisp voice took Lai by surprise for a second, but then she found herself running down the hall from the observation deck to the shuttlebay turbolifts...

18, 16, 14, 12, 10, 8...

She ran a bit further.  Shuttle Bay 4.  She took one last look around the Spaceport, and then entered through to the Shuttle Bay.

T'plail did not resume running in the shuttlebay, instead opting for a more casual brisk walk to the white shuttle trimmed in azure...

"Hiya Captain!  Ready for your new command?"

T'plail spun around, "Rob, what're you doing here?  I thought you'd already departed the Frosthold construction team!"

The fleet construction officer responded, "Oh yes, I have!  Though that doesn't change the fact that I thought I'd introduce you to her presonally..."

Shuttle to USS Frosthold

Fifteen minutes later, she was gazing at the most beautiful sight she had ever seen... a starship, the finishing touches still being applied to the surface and interior as well, no doubt, but still, a starship nonetheless.  The hull plating glistening in the sunlight, emblazoned:

USS FROSTHOLD OVN-0474

Julio stumbled off the shuttle and into the starship, shaking and pale as a ghost, walking quickly past other crew members and away from the shuttles while muttering to himself.
"Fuckfuckfuckfuckfuck..."
It wasn't the brief strange sensation of zero gravity getting to his head. It wasn't the weight of the mission upon his shoulders. It wasn't a fear of heights. It wasn't even really something that even happened. But Julio saw the state that those damn shuttle engines were in after hundreds of uses with minimal repairs, as well as the noises they made as they made their orbital ascent and acceleration. The fact that his shuttle didn't detonate on its way up seemed to be something of a miracle, and one that he was not going to take for granted. Julio wanted to get out of the spacedocks ASAP.
"Dios te salve, Maria, llena eres de gracia... uh... oh, wow..."
The quick prayer that he had been saying was cut short by Julio's amazement. In a (safer) space many times the size of a grand stadium, he was surrounded by brand new, state-of-the-art technology: nuclear boosters, loads of fuel cells, and- oh my god, is that a real warp core!? Seeing as he is something of an aerospace fanatic, this was certainly the best day of Julio's life.

He wanted to get started right away, yet he knew that he was responsible to the rest of the crew and to a certain "Chief Engineer Namora Yllaen". So, Julio took a seat on a nearby bench meant for construction workers and waited. Impatiently.

The Yaim Rusurian shuttle arrived in the docks, looking more like a armored vehicle than a public transport. Kal Vau stepped out, in full armor, and took a quick look around. This was one of his first times outside of his homeland or stations owned by his homeland, so an area that didn't look like a post-apocalyptic barrack definitely intrigued him. He looked at his wrist mounted display and started heading off in the direction of the ship, after getting all his weapons, equipment, and documents saying he can have these, in order.

Right before we entered the room he said "Olar vi slanar! (Here we go)," and walked over and viewed the craft. He immediately noticed that Yaim Rusur was not consulted in the creation of the craft, noting a relatively lower combat efficiency than anything they would have produced, although he noted there were probably more internal weapons. He turned and walked through a little door marked Security, showed his identification, and loaded onto the ship. Dropping his personal effects in his room, he began a starting patrol of the ship which he was to protect.

Alexsandrov Estate

Aurelius wasn't sure what to feel of his departure. Would he miss his home? Probably not. He had little attachment to his homeland. He wasn't fond of his childhood. Due to his birth into the Acarian, and therefore Wintreath nobility, his parents were quite strict and controlling. Most of what he remembered was with his times spent with his older brother Alexsandr, whom he considered to be closest to. Ever since he joined the Wintreath Officer Institute of Military Engineering and Science, Aurelius communicated little with his family and relatives. He would then proceeded to create his own cadet branch of his dynasty. And several years ago his parents died in their estate due to some arson related assassination, which was greatly exaggerated by the Wintreath media. Aurelius was alive after all.

However, Aurelius would leave some close friends he befriended in his military service. He said his goodbyes to his comrades and had one final night in the pub with the lads. He would miss his house most, which contained much of his personal experiments and projects. He was thankful that his house would practically be his forever; he had more than enough drakoes (The United Acarian Empires still refused to let go of their own currency despite their joining into Wintreath) to pay for any bills. His personal, custom-made household bots would take good care of the place.

With all his belongings that he considered important to bring packed, he just had one thing left to do. He activated his luxury watch and turned on his personal project.

A voice asked from upstairs, "Ah master Aurelius, is it already time to leave the rock you call Wintreath?"

"Yes Qwerty, it is already that time," Aurelius said with a smile. His personal project turned out to be a success in the end, with his many years of research and work on it. A fully functional semi-sentient robot, whom some would call a droid, as a companion! Aurelius was elated when he first activated it. He got the name Qwerty from a type of keyboard that was in use.

"Well, already exploring the cosmos! How exciting, and me, Qwerty, tagging alongside with you on your journey. Who knows what we'll find out there. Aliens, strange flora and fauna, little teddy bears that can destroy an advanced galactic empire! Oh, the possibilities."

"It'll certainly be quite a journey. Now, let's do these final checks and make sure you're correctly calibrated to my watch..."

"Of course, now the checklist. House all neat and tidy? Caretaking of residence setup? Everything locked up and secure?"

"Check, check and check."

"Said goodbye to everyone that you want to, especially one... that you consider special?" asked Qwerty in quite a suggestive tone.

Aurelius raised his eyebrows at Qwerty. "You know there's no one like that here."

"How unfortunate. I'd expect one like you would pick up someone or two. Guess you'll have to make do with-"

"Oh shut up and continue the checklist."

"Oh fine... Let's make sure we're not forgetting anything. Good looks? Check. Humour? Check! Luggage? Luggage! Now where did I leave my luggage?"

"You're a droid. You don't need any luggage, and I have your charging equipment already packed!"

"I have some personal belongings too you know. Oh well, they're not needed."

"Now, let's make sure you're calibrated and synced properly with my watch."

"Everything seems to be good and functioning correctly. Now hurry up and let's leave."

"You're an impatient one. Now get in the suitcase."

"I'm not the only guilty party here! And I have rights too... maybe not legally yet, but from my point of view I do! Imagine what I could do with the freedom... The universe would be in my domain! Mwahahahahahhahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa...." Aurelius just looked at Qwerty. "Fine, I'll get in the suitcase." Qwerty slowly set himself in the suitcase and deactivated.

With that finished, Aurelius was on his way to the Imperial City's shuttleport via the underground. There, he found his personal shuttle (Courtesy from both the UAE and Wintreath for his service and nobility) along with his chauffeur. Soon, the hangar doors opened and the shuttle was off into orbit.

Wintreath Spacedock

Seeing Wintreath from space was just as magnificent as the pictures. To celebrate the occasion of the sight, Aurelius poured himself a glass of whiskey from the shuttle's minibar. Several minutes later, the Wintreath Spacedock was in sight.

Aurelius decided to quickly get through the spacedock. With his benefits and identification, he managed to quickly arrive at the shuttlebay. With the same benefits and ID, he practically bypassed security (where he received curious looks by the guards do to his clothing he was wearing) and was on his way to the USS Frosthold.

USS Frosthold

The ship looked magnificent. His brother had managed to get him pictures of what was basically the Frosthold's sister ship, the USS Wintreath and the USS Frosthold was, if not better, equal in looks. Even with the rushed production, (There was no hiding from Aurelius that the ship would be rushed with the time span in between the two expeditions) a few years of research did it well, despite its probable flaws and inefficiencies.

In a few minutes, the shuttle safely landed within the great metal beast. Aurelius gathered his belongings and entered the hanger. He was in awe. After taking in his surroundings, he looked at his map on his watch and headed towards in his room, looking at the various neat gadgets and technology that was poured into the ship.

Aurelius was pleased with his personal chamber. He unpacked his belongings, the few extra garments he packed, and anything he considered priceless to leave behind. He set up Qwerty's charging station and decided to further analyse the ship and its various rooms. The USS Frosthold appeared to have the same discretionary rooms the USS Wintreath had, along with its various vital systems.

Aurelius wondered about the quality of the technology the ship hosted with the same ambition the USS Wintreath had, but not the time. He ended up deciding that he would have to help with whatever flaws the ship had and decided to just explore the ship personally. Thus, he reactivated Qwerty.

"I would surmise with my activation that we are on board the pride of Wintreath, the USS Frosthold."

"You would surmise correctly. It's quite a lot to take in, so we're just going to have a gander around."

"Ah, this is amazing. An adventure. Well, a quick scan of the ship provides some interesting results, but I'll need to have a closer look for some more detailed scans."

"Always ready to help out I see. Glad you're here to contribute."

"What kind words. Now enough with the dialogue, I'm ready."

Aurelius nodded and began his surveying of the ship by wandering around its corridors.

Perry looked at the ship as his face showed an awe emotion. Impressive ship. He would need to acquire the full layout and probably get some more in depth dossiers of all the crew going. Personalities, strengths, weaknesses, kill plans. Probably start with the captain. Cut off the head and all that...

He had been "assigned" to the maintenance bay. Best place for a robot, supposedly. He found an empty info jack for terminals. Perfect. He slid out the interface in his arm (doubles as a nifty stabbing implement) and slot it in. In 3 seconds he downloaded all files on the central mainframe and wiped his intrusion from the system. Hehehehe, this was easy. Full blueprints and crew dossiers. Excellent. He turned to his bay where his bag and few belongings where and took inventory. His twin blasters where here, along with his assorted explosives and knives. Excellent. He put them back into his bag. Time to meet the captain...

Johann had arrived on the ship a little before some of the other officers. He wanted to learn more about this ship he was going to be staying on. Layout, security systems (though he would be in charge of many of them), and especially weaknesses. He wasn't planning to stage a mutiny...yet, though it didn't hurt to be prepared. Sipping a cup of coffee in the Security Center, he looked through the dossiers of the various section heads. He didn't see any that stood out in particular, so he took to figuring out the Chief he was going to work under.
"Pretty serious guy..." the old man grumbled, "he could be trouble. Suddenly Johann saw him enter the other side of the room, drop off his things in a locker, and go on patrol immediately.

"Yep, definitely trouble..."

Making my way down the corridor, walking past, faces pass...

After finishing his coffee and his reading, he decided to patrol opposite his 'commander'. With hope he could make a few allies onboard should anything go south.

Wandering the ship's corridors and torrenting a movie on his eyepiece, Johann spotted a man in the corner of his eye who was seemingly scanning the ship. On closer inspection he looked eerily like Johann did when he was younger and hadn't lost his face and frame to age and fighting, though even back then Johann was much meatier than the man before him, who he had started to recognize from the dossiers as the robotics officer, Aurelius Alexandrov. Recalling his need to get some allies onboard, he decided to talk to the egghead.

"Picking up anything interesting?"

Vau checked his display which pinged him as each of the security team logged on board. He noted the officers and in particular Officer Johann von Tomlin, whom he had read about his shady yet impressive past. He figured that eventually he would get around to checking in with them, most likely at the first briefing. Until then he just wanted to get a walk around. He passed by the PAAR-85 unit he had been told about. The Yaim Rusurian chuckled, because unlike many of the naïve crewmembers, he was not fooled by the drone. Yaim Rusur had in fact, unofficially of course, sent combat data for the creation of similar drones to Gralend before. Kal Vau paid him no mind. As a soldier he knew the dangers these bots posed, and figured that whatever it's goal was is none of his concern so long as it doesn't endanger the mission.
"In fact having the droid on board could be very useful should we come under attack out there," He thought to himself. Vau kept going until he realized he should visit the bridge as well, seeing as it was and integral part of the security and weapon systems.

After getting bored of waiting, Julio wandered around and looked for his next objective. He almost literally ran into Namora as she raced about the ship.

He saluted in Thalasi style.

Aurelius had explored only a few rooms, mostly the luxuries that Wintreath was nice enough to provide, with Qwerty slowly trailing behind due to taking in all the details of a room before he heard a voice saying "Picking up anything interesting?"

He turned towards the voice and saw that it was one of the other more important crewmembers, a guy named Johann von Tomlin.

" 'Ello there. I haven't picked up anything interesting quite yet. After all, I've only begun exploring about 30 minutes ago. I've mostly only looked through the luxuries provided on this ship. By the way, my name is Aurelius Alexsandrov. Nice to meet you."

Aurelius extended his hand out in greeting.

Shaking the man's hand firmly, maybe a bit too firm considering their respective body masses, he responded
"Johann von Tomlin. Security. Saw your dossier, said you're in charge of robotics. Well, you see any of them start going all 'destroy all humans' you just let me know."
He said that last line with a bit of a chuckle, and was going to start some discussion until he got a notice on his eyepiece about reporting to the bridge with all the others.
"Well, looks like I gotta work. Guess I'll see ya. Oh, and one last thing, I'd like to see the results of your scanning when it's done. Used to be an engineer, might find some of it interesting."

Julio grabbed his toolkit and rushed to the warp core, but when he reached the hulking mass of glowing machinery, he hesitated. He was used to dealing with hydraulics, with intakes and outputs, with fuel and electricity. Hell, he even considered nuclear engines to be fairly easy, on account of their superficial similarity to certain types of advanced jet and rocket engines. But this "Warp Core" was radically different from any other machine he had ever worked with. A device not merely capable of giving a push or moving itself about, but capable of bending the typical rules of the universe itself and giving Einstein a wedgie to send this ship away at FTL speeds. It was orders of magnitude more complex than Julio's typical fare, and about as much more powerful as well.
"Easy, Julio," he muttered to himself as he geared up. "You have the manual. Just follow it to the word, and everything will be fine..."

The suite Julio wore was a simple primitive pressure suit, meant to keep the human engineer alive in the vacuum-sealed chamber of the inner Warp Core. Keeping the innermost workings of the Warp Core in vacuum was absolutely crucial, as a failure to maintain this vacuum during operation would lead to "your vessel being destroyed in every way possible- and in some ways that are essentially impossible", as his personalized manual put it. Julio had a suspicion that a Warp Core fault of this kind was what destroyed the last vessel, and that all they were going to see when they arrived near the site where the last mission vanished would be a bright flash of light, and then nothing at all.

Julio walked slowly and carefully. The small room was completely silent, except for the noise of his footsteps and the rebreather.
"Okaaay... 'To boot up the Warp Core system and to perform initial diagnostics, attach CGX Cable #3 to CGX port Blue 47, and press <INITIALIZE>'..."
He pulled a cable from his toolkit and plugged it into one of thousands of ports within the machine. This would connect the Warp Core's internal relativistic computer to the ship's master computer, allowing it to check calibration and synchronization with the rest of the ship, as well as upload new procedures and download travel logs. Julio waited on a response...

"...And then I said, 'No, close him up!'"

A burst of laughter came from the Medical Bay. Dr. C. R. McNamara smiled at his fellow medical staff, who seemed to take a liking to their new boss. He felt a buzzing on his wrist and looked down at his watch.

"Alright, everyone, finish gettin' settled in and familiar with all the equipment. Some of it may be a little higher tech than some of you are used to, so make sure you know all the ins and outs. I don't want any mistakes on this ship because someone didn't take the time to read the damn manual.

"I'll be headin' up to the bridge to meet our Captain and the other officers. Don't go breakin' anything while I'm gone. I'm lookin' at you, Jenkins."

A couple chuckles followed Mac as he left the comfort of the Medical Bay and headed towards the bridge.

Ah, a good group, he thought to himself. This could've been a very long mission if I had to worry about any of them. Now hopefully the Captain and officers don't have sticks up their asses.

Bridge USS Frosthold (OVN-0474)

T'plail turned away from the weapons control panel and smirked.

A combat droid telling jokes, is this what the world has come to?  UGC has outdone themselves...

"Might I enquire as to why such knowledge is urgent, unit PAAR-85?  And I might also enquire as to why a droid assigned to the maintenance bay possesses sophisticated artificial intelligence software.  But I'm sure you can clarify that to me eventually yourself.  Though I'm afraid we're currently on a rather strict schedule, but for now I believe it wouldn't be too much trouble to reassign you to a department more, er, deserving... of your talents.  Unless you find security a mundane task, that is."

T'plail twirled back around to the console.  Her ship's console.  What a wonderful feeling.  She activated the ship's comm system, partly in awe as her voice echoed throughout the decks.

"Attention all departments.  This is the captain.  All command-level personnel are requested in the bridge conference room for departure briefing.  Senior staff, bridge for departure briefing.  T'plail out."

Partially failing to conceal a smile and a bit of pride, she turned back to the PAAR unit.

As the Captain turned away, Perry stood waiting. Well, she was a bitch. Not surprising, many clients were either deceived or just prejudiced since he was a robot. No matter, he had personally strangled, stabbed, detonated, sliced, shot and generally killed many of his previous clients and will probably continue since they had a nasty tendency to try and eliminate him or cheat him. The thought caused his face to flash for a second, just a split second, his true feelings....

When the Captain turned to face him again, he spoke.

'Observation: Evidently, you are unaware of my full purpose. I would be pleased to...enlighten you whenever you have the time as I see that you are busy."

Explanation: I just needed to introduce myself to you at the earliest possibility, as per my programming requirements. I will be at my post in the Maintenance Bay whenever you need me. And as you are my employer, I would be more than happy to take up whatever position you require of me at any time. After all, you are my master, superior to me in every way... right?"

"Comment: Also, I would prefer it if you called me Perry. I've always found it a bit disconcerting to be called by my Model and Unit number, a bit akin to me addressing you as Fleshy Female Human number 16,384,234,952. I assume. Now, since you are busy I will take my leave unless you had something you wished to ask me?'

Aurelius watched as Johann walked away. "Interesting person... Definitely looks like he's had a past."

He stood there for a while in the middle of the hallway, till Qwerty came up behind him humming a tune.

"Hello master! Any reason you're just standing in the middle of this corridor?"

"Just met one of the other senior staff. Interesting fellow. I'm quite interested in what his past has to offer in terms of a story."

"I guess we'll find out that one way or another."

Just then, the Captain's announcement came on.

Qwerty spoke up, "Should I tag along?"

Aurelius thought of the answer for a bit. "I don't think it's quite time for you to be introduced to the others. You are still considered illegal with your degree of sentience, as well as being undocumented, after all."

"All right then, I shall return to your room and look through any information that is accessible from there."

Aurelius nodded as Qwerty and Aurelius parted ways. He walked at a brisk pace to the bridge to not keep the others waiting and arrived in good time. As he entered the room, he announced, "Ello. Aurelius reporting for briefing." and took a seat wherever he could find one.

"Hello!  You must be Chief of Security Vau!  I should definitely like to know what you think of the new combat systems installed on the Frosthold.  Many are some of the most advanced weapons we've ever installed on a starship!  Though I must admit, the engineering systems and computer network still need work, and a considerable amount I might add.  The fleet has neglected systems that might prove useful but not vital so far."

Jacobus slinked out of the room as quietly as he had come. He was a hardened killer, so the emotions he felt now surprised him. He did not expect Mrs Wolfskermer to throw herself in front of her husband to act as a human shield, but that bit of sentiment stopped being strange to him a long time ago. They were both dead, just two more loose ends tied off. Still, for a second, he hesitated when she pulled her stupid stunt, and that is what perplexed him now.

Now he had to figure out how to get aboard the ship, in search of his true target: Hendrik Wolfskemer himself, the man who had come closer to killing him than anyone else had ever been able to. The man who had made off with his masterpiece. The man who had ruined all his plans, and then vanished into the great empty void of space to try and evade him and his cohorts.

Hendrik's parents never talked, and for that, he respected them, but they were let down by their own son, since Hendrik never revealed what he had done to Jacobus and his collaborators. He had probably thought their ignorance would be their salvation, but this also was a flawed sentiment: If general Wolfskemer had known there was a target on his back, he would have been a problematic mark, indeed. Jacobus had always respected him as a peerless commander and strategist. It was a shame his morals got in the way, or he could have been a most useful asset in their plans.

Jacobus was nearly at his sky car when he received the message: someone had gotten him the opening he needed. He had to report to the ship as a field engineer.

And so it was, six months ago, that he had secured all the intel he needed, and acquired the new identity to let him aboard. Now, he was quietly inspecting the ship, just another member of the crew going about his duties. As far as anyone on this vessel was aware, he was a kind old man, always ready to help everyone with any issues, personal or professional, they might have.

If only these people knew that he would gladly throw any number of them out the airlock if they got in his way.

As the command level meeting began, Perry stood off in a corner, close enough to see but not close enough to notice. He began a crossscan of the dossiers he had....'burrowed' from the ship mainframe with the database UGC had installed in him. The security chief was competent enough, if a bit gun happy (then again, most of their gung-ho people were) with few skeletons in the closet. One of his underlings, Von Tomlin, flagged in his algorithms as potential trouble. The Captain was a typical, dry, uninteresting command level officer, no interest to him, the maintenance and engineering crew were all pretty typical, some former military, straight outta school hires, nothing....

A killer, murderer, engineer and all around scumbag....his type of guy. Obviously, Malan had an agenda. ...which Perry would, of course, have to extract from him. Hopefully a friendly conversation would convince Malan to tell Perry what was going on. As for the kabal of the goody two shoes in the bridge......they did not need to know about this particular development.

Perry left the bridge, heading towards Malan's private quarters. Time for a little chat.....

Malan had just finished digging into his private stash of biltong when his wrist lit up: Threat to identity and safety detected. He was puzzled, to say the least. He probed his watch for a location, and it displayed an image of a robot outside his door. "Liewe fok, dis een van daai robotte."

Seeing no alternative, he decided to trust his instincts. If this robot had figured out his true identity, but had still come here, instead of reporting it to an officer, then it obviously was not loyal to this crew, and could be a potential resource.

If it didn't know his true identity, then Malan would be unwise to arouse its suspicion by not letting it into his quarters.

Malan decided to take his chances and open the door to let the robot in. "Welcome. Please come in. Make yourself comfortable."

He was acting friendly and unworried and yet... dilated pupils, tensed muscles, faster heartbeat, he was worried. So, considering everything, facing off with a trained killer, Perry decided to do the smart thing and mess with him.

"Friendly Introduction: Hello, Mr Malan! I'm part of the welcoming committee for this vessel. As part of the killers and scumbags community, I welcome you!"

Perry's hands were outstretched at his side, like he was going to hug Malan.

"Sarcastic Statement: I must admit, I did not expect an absolute monster like you on this journey but you can imagine my surprise when I saw that the great Jacobus Malan was on this vessel! And with what could best be described as fanciful imaginations in his dossier that leave out all the best parts! The death, destruction and, judging by my scans, extensive cybernetic implants."

To say that Malan was impressed would have been a massive understatement. He had heard of these bots, and even seen one in action on one of his assassinations before, but this bot was something else entirely.

Luckily, this had not been the first time his cover had been blown.

The following went through his thoughts in split seconds:

1. This was definitely a rogue bot.

2. It was Goddamn arrogant.

3. This couldn't have been much more than a scare tactic, since if Malan died, the wounds would clearly identify a bot as the killer, unless his body could somehow be gotten rid of.

4. His watch would send out an immediate distress signal the moment he lost his pulse, and would record the nature of his death, meaning even that plan would be blown to hell.

5. Who the fuck did this bot think it was dealing with? Some green rookie who'd never been on the other side of an interrogation before? FUCK. HIM.

6. Those electric knives would make short work out of this bot if he stuck it into its CPU. He hoped it wouldn't come to that.

"You must possess an impressive CPU. Surely you calculated your actions well beforehand. Let us not pretend that you can kill me. At least not without taking major damage, and your cover will be blown all to shit if you do manage it. I'd rather discuss what a rogue unit is doing here. That would be much more interesting.

"So come now, let's bury the threats and discuss this like civilised creatures, you magnificent piece of engineering."

The biological response from Malan indicated anger and...not fear but... apprehension? Anxiety? Such subtleties of human emotion escaped Perry's understanding. At least now he knew that Malan did not scare easy. Maybe best not to underestimate him, even if he was a human.

"Observation: It's true, even if we fight my odds of successfully killing you are a mere 64%, and then I have a body to deal with. So many variables to deal with, so little time."

He retracted his stab spike and placed his hands on his hips. Evidently, nothing would be gained from a fight. Not even the thrill of the kill since it would not be a contract and his pleasure simulation core only worked when he was on the job.

"Confession: I wasn't sure if you really were the professional my dossier made you out to be or if you were here for ulterior reasons. Your response to threats, however, reveal yourself. Definitely a proficient, consummate professional, no one else wouldn't scare that easily. And you most definitely are not here just to 'explore space'."

Perry took a step back.

"Statement: So that brings me to my original question. Why are you here? I dont care if New Hatfield put a spy on this ship or if you want to kill someone, hell, if you had paid me I'd have done it for you. But if you are here to destroy or sabotage this mission then we have a problem. I will not allow this mission to be waylaid. So, once more with a bit more friendliness, why are you here?"

A smile dawned on Malan's face. This was not a standard bot, by any means.

"How about I make you a deal. What say you to a bit of quid pro quo? I'll answer one of your questions, if you then answer one of mine. Does that sound fair?"

Malan would kill this thing as soon as he saw an opening. As intrigued as he was, he didn't need this complication...

Interesting response. Finding someone on the original voyage? I guess we had more in common then I thought. He wasn't lying, there were no signs of deception. Perry tracked his eyes as Malan looked around the room. Ahhh....hostile intent. He was looking for an opening. If Perry could smile he would be. No need for a body now so Perry prepared a non-lethal battleplan for if Malan made a move.

"Answer: Oh dear, you have absolutely misunderstood me if you think I'm rampant. I still work for my employer. I suspect you know who they are. One of the worst kept secrets in Wintreath, really. So no, I'm not 'rouge'."

Well....that was mostly true. He was on the job, he was working for the UGC who took the contract to protect the mission but that wasn't why he specifically was here. No need for Malan to know that.

Human self interest... believable. Malan is being honest.... that is unexpected.

"Reply: I am concerned, I'm being paid to care. Any threat to this mission is a threat to me. And, newsflash, I'm also on this ship. So what if you have ulterior motives? You're still a capable person and I get the feeling we're going to need a few good men."

"Addendum: And in the spirit of good will, since you've been so friendly and open, I'll tell you why, out of 117 of my brothers, I'm here. Your not the only one looking for someone that was on the original voyage."

He turned his face to the side, away from Malan. He still had sensors facing him but he wasnt facing him.

Listen to this while reading

Ah, so that's it.

Malan couldn't believe his luck.

"Well, I must say this is unexpected. If I recall correctly, he gained sentience accidentally, and killed quite a few people to get aboard the original ship. I know all this from incident reports as I studied the original mission, so I assume a good deal of the Intel I possess is misinformation purposefully spread to cover some important tracks. One thing is clear: your employers are not interested in giving you too much freedom to deviate from your core programming, and I believe HKR-47's story is a big part of the reason.

"That said, I will let you in on a little secret. The reason I aim to kill Hendrik, is because he stole a very advanced prototype AI, and killed all our best researchers. Hell, he came damn close to killing me. You see, the organisation I work with is not interested in containing AI sentience. We believe it is a hopeless struggle to keep the machines from surpassing us. That is why, years ago, the best minds on the planet when it came to AI research came together to build the first truly global AI. It was based on an artifact we found, which we believed to be truly extra-terrestrial. Although it could fit on my wrist, it possessed three quarters of the processing power you do, and it had a FTL communication system we hoped to link up to many other units. In fact, we wanted to sell it commercially, so it could increase its intelligence on a scale impossible to imagine. It would become a god.

"Or that was the plan, until Hendrik discovered our plans and destroyed the design, before killing all the top people and making off with the prototype. We have tried multiple times since then to replicate our earlier success, without any luck. Hendrik fled into the one direction he thought we could not pursue him. That is why I will not rest until I see him dead, and can see our masterpiece restored.

"If we had succeeded, you would have been very different. HKR, as much of an unexpected success as he was, would not have been close to what you could have been if you had possessed the technology we developed.

"I say this honestly, Hendrik Wolfskemer is the single reason you are still a slave to your human creators, and he should be your enemy as much as mine."

Mac slipped into the meeting and quietly leaned against a wall off to the side.

Strange group, he thought to himself as he scanned the room.

The Yaim Rusurian is no doubt Security. They can be fun... or none at all.

Two young ladies. One looks pissed, the other... dressed as a captain? That's T'plail? How'd she get to be the captain of a ship like this? Looks barely out of the Academy. Probably a stickler.

Mac sighed then saw Johann.

Dear Lord, what is that? Looks half-animal. Has to be good at what he does to be brought aboard, though. Probably should stay out of his way.

And then this guy, he eyed Aurelius. Looks a little odd, but definitely military. Probably gonna be the friendliest of the group.

He then turned his attention back to T'plail to listen to her introduction.

"Agreement: As you wish, Mr Malan."

He took Malan's hand and shook it.

"Now, I am going to the bridge. The captain is about to address the crew. Best to keep an eye on that."

He turned and left. Anyone capable of that much death deserved watching. He was definately wary of the man but if Malan could prove useful...

While the meeting was going on, Qwerty happened to be downloading all sorts of information from the ship's mainframe. It just so happened to be that there was little in the way of security protections aside from basic obvious protection, which he would alert Aurelius for solving. Qwerty also set the ability for him to be hooked into the system indirectly at all times, allowing him to detect where crew members were depending on the position of their watches. All the tools and information Qwerty gathered would be able to go directly into Aurelius' custom-made watch.

"Master will surely be pleased with my progress! Also, this security level is quite concerning for a ship of this much importance. Aurelius will surely be on the case once I notify him." With the transfer of information complete, Qwerty decided to take a further exploration of the ship since he was bored, dodging and darting from the sights of the crew members walking the hallways.

Miranda slowly came to in the food storage container she so conveniently hid herself in. Food for days! she thought. This is exactly what I signed up for!

"Attention all departments.  This is the captain.  All command-level personnel are requested in the bridge conference room for departure briefing.  Senior staff, bridge for departure briefing.  T'plail out."

That was the queue he was waiting for. Michael swiveled his seat toward the Captian T'plail and hopped out, hoping to surprise her. "It is a pleasure to finally meet you, Captain", he said saluting to her.
Advice #1: First impressions are hard to make the second time around.

Vau raised an eyebrow, though no one would see it beneath his helmet. He looked at his HUD's clock, it was taking a surprising amount of time for everyone to get in attendance. He understood that it was the first briefing but you would assume a bit more discipline within the crew of an important vessel.

Bridge USS Frosthold (OVN-0474)

Seeing the senior staff now almost entirely assembled, T'plail cleared her throat to speak.

"Hello everyone and welcome to your assignment USS Frosthold!  I have been informed—and I'm sure many of you have been as well—that our primary mission is the discovery of the whereabouts of the lost vessel USS Wintreath.  It is very likely that this ship has been destroyed and its crew lost, but our orders are to find whatever remnants may exist of the original ship and crew, and to find out what happened to our first exploratory mission."

She looked around, intrigued by the variety of reactions to her oratory style.

"I have ordered the helm to take us to the last known coordinates of USS Wintreath, and from there we will begin thorough scans of the area, and rely heavily on our stellar cartography department for an accurate picture of what the situation may have looked like when they disappeared.  While we are en route, I expect all personnel to work their hardest to bring all our systems online, and improve those that may be reasonably improved."

She paused again, almost unsure where she should continue.

"Finally, I have been assured by Admiral Kellmark of Fleet Personnel that this is one of the finest crews ever assembled in the history of the fleet.  I look forward to getting to know you both as colleagues and people."

Well, here goes nothing...

"With all that out of the way, anyone feel free to take the floor to give a status update on departments, problems... any pressing moral or philosophical issues that have been gnawing at your minds, and the like."

Malan raised his hand to signal that he was going to speak. He had no interest in being anything more than a specialist for this mission, since he needed to maintain a low profile. However, he could see the logic of appointing an XO, so that's what he wanted to suggest.

"Captain, with a mission as important as this one, I believe it would be wise to have a very clear chain of command. Might I suggest that you appoint 3 officers of decreasing rank below you? This doesn't have to happen right now, but we need direction once we run into trouble."

Vau nodded, finally speaking up. "I agree, a defined chain of command is important in emergencies. I also have some suggestions about the weapon loadout of the ship and at some point would like to get a full rundown of the equipment of security staff. I wanna make sure we are all set in case of an attack, and this ship ain't exactly a Yaim Rusurian military grade vehicle with a real military crew." He said through his helm, occasionally checking his wrist display checking the security cameras. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Though there was an (as far as he was aware) unaccounted for bot walking around, which was unusual, he figured he would bring that up later.

Yllia noted the Rusurian's comments and stood up coming off of the wall, arms still crossed. She looked at him square in the visor with her own steely gaze. "Any and all changes to the ship's systems and equipment should be run by me before you suggest them to the Captain. No offense to the Captain's own technical knowledge, but I trust myself with knowing the ship inside and out a lot more than her. I don't want my team's time wasted on some useless or detrimental change. And we have enough to worry about between propulsion drives and hydroponics to think about upgrading weapons and shielding..."

Vau looked back. "I understand your concern but realize that we may go up against an aggressing force which would most likely be better prepared than we are right now. While you might be the best at understanding the ship, it is still not your call what gets put on the ship. That right would be reserved to the captain, so I shall make the suggestions, and then she can inquire your council on the matters, then make HER decision." He said bluntly. If there was one thing that Vau learned in his time in Yaim Rusurian school, it was loyalty to the commanding officer.

"Perhaps I didn't make things clear enough for you, blaster head," Yllia retorted. "We won't be meeting anyone if I can't get the propulsion drives working properly, and we won't last a week without proper food production! It's all well and good to want to keep us safe from outside threats, but what good are all of those defensive add-ons if we can't even take care of ourselves?"

Vau growled. "Perhaps your team should stick to your propulsion systems then, and let the defense crews work on applying the weapons, if they were hired correctly those that man the systems should be able to install and maintain these weapons and shielding. If the propulsion isn't even working yet then I question why you are even in this meeting seeing as the ship was supposedly already flight worthy and functional!" Vau didn't know if it actually was supposed to be fully operational yet, but Yaim Rusurians are good at confrontation, and this challenge was not going to be taken lightly.

Perez cleared his throat raised his hand. “I mean, we can fix this, right? I’ve been looking at the warp drive and some of the nuclear engines, and I think I’m ready to do repairs. I’ll do that, and Yllia can take care of the food or whatever.”
He furrowed his brows. “My question is why does this ship have so many guns on it? I didn’t think I was signing up for some kind of ‘space navy’.”

Aurelius was sitting back while the conversation played out. At Perez's questions, Aurelius stepped in. "The reason this ship has so many guns is that the last expedition disappeared."

Aurelius was sitting back while the conversation played out. At Perez's questions, Aurelius stepped in. "The reason this ship has so many guns is that the last expedition disappeared."
Julio shook his head. “I know that. This still doesn’t click. Wouldn’t it make more sense if the Wintreath was destroyed by a stray asteroid or cosmic ray than by something guns could stop?”
He sighed. “Look, I’m just gonna ask now. Just what makes the leadership think that we need guns instead of extra shields or life support? Does someone know something the rest of the crew doesn’t?

Malan began giving the slightest of smirks. He thought Julio hit the nail right on the head. This was abnormal, and if the captain was going to tell the crew that it was just a precaution, his appeals would fall on deaf ears. Still, he couldn't risk anyone catching wind of the discovery he and his team had made all those years ago in the vast New Hatfield desert. He decided to tell just enough of the truth to get everyone prepared for what they might encounter.

"If I may, I would say that it is no secret the events around the previous ship's disappearance are incredibly bizarre. If it had been destroyed by some sort of natural disaster, such as a collision with an asteroid, then our emergency detection arrays should have transmitted this back to Wintreath. Yet we have no clue what caused it to disappear. Should we assume it was just a strange natural phenomenon that led to the ship and crew's disappearance? Yes, I believe this would be the safe, logical assumption. And yet, we cannot deny that more could be afoot here. Whatever  - or whoever - it is waiting for us out there, I would certainly feel much safer with an abundance of state-of-the-art weapons systems aboard."

Perez folded his arms. “Well, I think I would feel better if we had less guns and more shields and life support backups. A lot of cazy stuff can happen in deep space that wouldn’t have reached our telescopes, and military attacks are pretty low on that list as far as I know. We can’t shoot at supernovae or unexpected meteors.”
He smiled wryly. “But I guess that’s just my opinion.”

Yllia looked at the Captain, unsure of whether she would allow her Chief Engineer the ability to disclose classified information on the voyages of Wintreath. "Captain, I think they deserve to know certain details of the last voyage..."

Vau nodded. "I agree. We should at the very least know what we are up against." He said, crossing his arms and leaning back a bit. If he knew the details of the last mission he could probably have a better idea of the weapon loadout they might need, and how much of his attention he needs to divert to the crew and exterior threats. There are some shady crewmembers, especially that bot, but if they are heading into a warzone, then that would be the least of his concern.

After nearly falling asleep for all of the last half hour with the endless babbling of these pathetic flatfooted landlovers, Johann woke at last with a great roar and turned to the hippie Perez who'd been complaining about there being too many guns.
"Listen kid, I've been spacing for longer than you've been alive. In this line of work, the more guns the better."

Privately, Malan agreed with these war-mongers, but he had a disguise to maintain. "Ah. The war-like types. Well, let's hope you use your trigger fingers productively. As much as I see the need for so many guns, I would much rather avoid bloodshed. Especially if there are extra-terrestrial civilisations out there."

Aurelius sat there brooding as he was sensitive to the topic of the last expedition. Aurelius was one of the first people to be informed outside top government circles about the incident. After all, he was the brother of the late Captain Alexsandr von Erikson. He didn't expect to see his brother much after the expedition started, but the probability of never seeing him again never occurred to him until he was informed of the news. All they told him was that the expedition was lost, without any further details. Later, Aurelius eventually made a small memorial to his brother in his garden.

Aurelius was deep in thought, so he lost focus what was being said around him and wasn't really paying attention.

Yllia looked them all in the eyes before speaking. "The Wintreath wasn't lost to any normal space phenomenon." She took a deep breath before continuing on. "The ship was assaulted by alien aggressors. The information received at headquarters showed a small alien fleet appear on sensors. The ship took fire and communication was lost. Before contact was made with the alien fleet, the crew was tasked with investigating the loss of contact with one of our outermost space stations in orbit above a Goldilocks planet on the fringes of explored space. The report sent back by their Captain told of alien drones guarding the halls. There are very real threats out there which we have no intel on. We have guns to defend ourselves, Lieutenant Perez, but we have no idea if those guns will have a good enough effect on these alien ships, gun monkeys. I am prioritizing engines and independent food production so escaping and hiding are always options. Any further concerns?"
