Ummmm okay
So this is something I've been half-thinking about doing since I started my term but never got around to 'til now because I just thought "ehhhh, nobody would use it. The pride ain't that active". But of course, just not making any threads doesn't exactly help that issue.
This is the Pride chat. Anything for stuff that's too... Gay for the regular SWYM thread. Post anything. Memes, news articles, whatever. But it has to be LGBT-related.

GAY IS OKAY *throws confetti and sparkles*
Lol, in all seriousness this is a good idea. I might go dig out my gay memes for this sight.

Hello hello! Howre my fellow queers today?
-
Hello? Anyone home?
-
Hmmm... This place could stand a revival. Got any ideas on that Nyght? I'll see if I can't recruit a few more people to come chat.
-
I guess what it comes down to is what does the LGBT community want to discuss? A long, long time ago I used to be on some LGBT forums, and from what I remember the discussions were usually along a few categories:
1) Related to personal experiences involving being LGBT (usually teens asking for advice/assurance that what they're going through is normal)
2) Chit-chat, social topics
3) Pic topics (I especially remember gaygamer.net's "How do you look in your underwear" thread :P)
4) Discussion of LGBT news
We already do #4 somewhat, most of our chit-chat takes place on Discord, and I'm not sure even an underwear topic would be appropriate outside the NSFW sections. We could discuss our experiences more though, I suppose.
-
Id love to year more on peoples personal journeys and experiences. I feel like we've all got very different ideas and views on the queer community and experiences thereof.

Ask. I'm an open book

So now that the holidays are done and a new year has begun, what's on your queer agenda? Any gun events or plans for the year? Any Prides you really want to go to? I'm excited for Dragcon again. NYC is a blast!

Hi Butter! I'm afraid to day I'm not really doing anything LGBT-related atm, so I'm not sure...what's up with you? :)

I'm just trying to get back on track with everything with Wintreath and my job...besides the recent drama here, it has been challenging juggling that and working from home, but I think I'm doing better. :)
Hmm...sounds like you're excited about your birthday if it's a month away and that's what you're thinking about. :P

a lot of my friends are older than me so most of them are going into the military or whatnot so this birthday is a bit more special when I get to teach them all how to not freak the fuck out when a beaver brushes up on their legs in a river that's completely brown. and get shark teeth that too.

Hello my dear queers! Wassup? What's on the gay agenda tonight?
-
Converting the masses, of course. :P
-
I gotta admit, I do hate the idea of converting people to gay or str8 or whatever. The logic goes if u can be converted one way, u can be converted the other.
-
@Mateo406: I think the idea is usually used as a joke here, especially as part of the gay agenda. :P
I don't think you can really change someone's sexuality, but someone can discover there's more to their sexuality than they thought. Since being straight is normal and expected by default in society, this discovery usually goes in the direction of being bi or gay.
-
Once I make this post I'll have claimed an entire section of the Wintreath forum to myself! (sorry)

I feel like a big part of the "converting str8 guys" and indeed, reparative therapy exist because a great deal of people still look at sexuality as a binary. Like when people talk about Gay guys who choose to change and go straight, well, they're either lying really well to themselves or they had some instance of interest in the opposite sex already. And I think the same goes for straight guys who "convert." A lot of the ones I've talked to say it wasn't so much becoming gay, as much as it was becoming okay with interest in the same sex within themselves.

That seems right in my experience. In a way I understand, because it's easier to label something as binary...being either straight, gay, or something in between (bi). But as I've gotten older and explored my sexuality more, I've come to realize just how limiting those options and labels are...at this point I think everyone's sexuality is unique to them, and trying to summarize it in a word or even a few words is self-limiting, though I understand the need for to try to summarize for a conversation.
More broadly, I think it comes from the fear some may have had that if their sexuality changes so would their entire personality, like if a guy were to become gay they'd suddenly be into 'girly' things and become flamboyant. Hopefully both the mindset and the stereotypes are fading away now that many people actually know someone in the LGBTQ community.

So how do all my fellow queer folks feel? How y'all getting on with things?
-
Truly, fabulous
-
Glad to hear it. Any particular reason for such fabulosity?
-
I'm the opposite. But yes why fabulous?
-
Glad to hear it. Any particular reason for such fabulosity?
Things are going very well here. And new opportunities arise

Glad to hear it! Keep on feeling those good vibes!
I'm feeling pretty good, myself. Got into drag for the first time in months last night and was pleasantly surprised with how well it came out.
-

Though I am gonna steal the term fabulosity
-
I'd prefer you steal Fannypacktastic but that works just as well I suppose.
-
No, that one doesn't sound as good. Though ill give it few tries just to see how it goes
-
It's one of the best words I have. It's so versatile.
-
Was talking to one of my str8 friends, and asked him about me being gay and if I stood out as obviously gay or if I hid it well/ acted str8...
... he laughed...
In all seriousness he said it was obvious. When asked y, he said I look and sound gay. Like, wtf?
He explained that I have a gay voice (i do have a lilt) and I dressed gay. Basically he said all of clothes were nice and in good condition and everything accessorized and was fashionable for my particular styles, where as str8 guys just throw on whatever. And that no matter what, I always looked good.
Have any of u ever been told shit similar, or experienced that or something similar? I wonder if there's a touch of truth there? Like if there's this secret gay code or some shit that alot of us just dress the way we do to get guys to notice us.
-
I've never been told that, lol.
Then again, I don't pay particular attention to my clothing or fashion. I tend to buy whatever I like that fits at places like Wal-Mart, and usually do the bare minimum to be presentable. It's just not something I care much about really, though maybe I'd be hotter if I did. :P
I suppose some gay people can have a "gay" voice...mine tends to sound feminine so it can come off that way, but that's hardly the case for everyone that's gay or bi. I worry that's one of those things that's probably more of a stereotype than reality.
-
I mean, it's all based on stereotypes. And those are really rooted in the queer eye for the str8 guy kinda vibe. Think back on a lot of the gay guys on tv and such. There's a higher pitch, maybe a lilt, perhaps a lisp. They're always dressed to the 9's. I mean, I'm a walking stereotype a lot of the time these days. But back in my goth days I always used to get, "Wow. You don't seem gay at all!"
A lot of that attitude depends on people's exposure to actual queer folx.
-
To be sure! Its really kind of amazing to me that in this day and age, being gay is still a shock to some people. And alot of folks are truly entrenched in their ideas that gay people always look, act, sound etc in very specific stereotypical ways.
-
That's because most exposure to queer folx happens in the media for a lot of people. And, again, a lot of those portrayals have relied on stereotypes to get across the fact that a character is queer.
-
So does anyone have any plans to celebrate PRIDE month? It's doubtful we'll be able to do the festivals and celebrations that we normally do so I was wondering if anyone has any plans for personal observations or celebrations.
-
I'll hopefully be in Hawaii by the time of Pride, so I'm hoping I get to see my first celebration of it while I'm down there.
-
You've never been to a PRIDE event before?
