Title: Arena Game 4: Team PvM
Post by: Gerrick on October 11, 2017, 07:05:24 PM
It seems that there is interest for another game of the Arena!

Since we've had a few different types of games, I figured I'd allow everyone some choices:

FFA vs. Teams
1. Free-For-All: Every player for themselves (like Game 1 (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=3844.0))
2. Teams: Players choose their teams, whether into 2 large teams (like Game 2 (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=4078.0)), or into 3+ small teams (like the Summersend Game (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=4651.0))

PvP vs. PvM
Also, I've come up with a new style where players fight against waves of NPCs (most likely those from the Bestiary (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=3846.0)) instead of each other, then the last player/team standing wins. (I wouldn't control the NPCs, their targets would all be random.) So PvP (Player vs. Player) is the regular type of game, while PvM (Player vs. Monsters) is the new type where you fight NPCs.

Use the poll above to cast your votes (everyone may cast up to two votes), and feel free to post below if you have any questions or comments.

With votes from 5 of the 7 voters, it looks like Team PvM is the winner! I'll get to writing up the rules, and I'll post them and the signups sometime hopefully today or tomorrow.
Title: Arena Game 4: Team PvM
Post by: Gerrick on October 17, 2017, 12:00:13 AM
Welcome to the fourth game of the Arena! As voted by you, the players, this game will be Team Players vs. Monsters, meaning players will group into teams to combat waves of beasts controlled by the Holy Triumvirate of Chance: Lord RNGesus, Lady Luck, and Miss Fortune. I, as the Host, will merely be their instrument, performing the actions they speak. All selections, actions, and targets of enemy beasts will be determined through the roll of the dice. Beasts come in waves, and at the end of each wave, players have a chance to receive potions.

Please read through the rules even if you have already played before as there have been a few changes, most importantly:
Post your actions in this thread rather than PM them to me. You're not fighting each other, so it doesn't matter if you see what each other are doing.
You may no longer perform regular attacks in defensive stance.
Potions and the Alchemist class are back. You may scavenge unused potions from dead players.
Blocking is back. You may not block two turns in a row.

The Rules

1. Before the game starts, players will sign up in this thread. Each player will choose a class and two of that class's abilities. If you are creating a new team, also include a team color. If you want to join an existing team, ask the founder of that team, and they'll have to confirm to accept. You may instead choose to not join a team, then I'll group up the leftovers after signups close.

2. Spectators may place bets on players at this point like so: Team Name: Wager. Please open an account at the Bank before betting. When the application period is concluded, all bets will be locked in.

3. Each player will start with 40 health points. A player may not be healed over the 40 HP cap.

4. At the start of the match, the Host will perform a 1d20 roll for initiative for each player and a roll for each beast depending on their agility, determining the combat order for the first round. If there are equal initiative rolls, additional rolls will be used to determine who comes first. After the combat order is determined, the Host will post for all to see.

5. At this point, the Host will ask for all players to post what their stances and actions will be like so: Stance, Action, Target (if applicable), Potion Action (if applicable). Players will have roughly 48 hours at the start of each round to post their actions. Each player will start in the stance they post for the first round.

6. Each player’s action will literally occur in the combat order (unless affected by changed initiative from certain abilities or the agility potion). For example, if a player is going to perform a block, but another player with a higher initiative attacks them first, then the block will not reduce any of that damage as the blocking player had not acted yet; however, if another player with a lower initiative attacks the blocking player, then the damage will be reduced as the block had by then already been performed.

7. There are two stances: offensive and defensive. Stances are set/changed right before an action is performed and will stay the same until changed again before another action.
       a. Offensive stance is the default stance and has no effect on damage given or received. Regular attacks and some abilities require players to be in offensive stance to perform.
       b. Defensive stance reduces damage taken by 1d10. Blocking requires players to be in defensive stance to perform.

8. There are four basic actions: attack, block, use an ability, and scavenge potions. Only one action may be performed per turn.
       a. The regular attack is a 1d20 roll, which the Host will perform. Regular attacks can only be performed while in offensive stance.
       b. Blocking reduces all damage targeted at the player by half (rounded down). Blocking will last until another action is performed on the next round. Blocking can only be performed while in defensive stance. Players may not block two rounds in a row.
       c. Each class has a different special ability which only it can perform. Unless stated otherwise, each ability can only be performed once every three rounds, and each ability has a separate cooldown. For example, if a player uses one ability on round 1 and the other ability on round 2, they may use the abilities again on rounds 4 and 5, respectively. Passive abilities last until the player performs another action on the next round. Again, some abilities require one to be in offensive stance to perform.
       d. Scavenging potions allows a player to collect all unused potions from a single dead player target.

9. There are five types of potions: health, strength, defense, agility, and luck. Players may only hold up to two potions at once. At the end of each wave, each player who has an empty potion slot has a 1 in 3 chance to receive either an HP potion, a random non-HP potion, or nothing.
       a. The health potion heals the player for 5 HP.
       b. The strength potion increases the player's next attack by 5 damage.
       c. The defense potion decreases the player's damage received from each attack for one turn by 2 damage.
       d. The agility potion increases the player's initiative by 10. Note: this may change the player's place in the combat order.
       e. The luck potion allows for a reroll for a specified action, and the higher roll is used.

10. Potion actions may be performed separately from the regular actions (attack/block/ability/scavenge). They are performed immediately before the regular actions. There are two basic potion actions: consume potion and pass potion. Only one potion action may be performed per turn.
       a. Consuming a potion immediately gives the player the benefits of the potion, which lasts one turn.
       b. Passing a potion allows a player to pass a single potion to another player as long as the receiving player has an empty potion slot. The receiving player may consume the received potion as soon as their next turn. This means if a player passes a potion to another player with a lower initiative, the receiving player may consume the potion on that same round. Note: because agility potions affect the combat order but actions occur in the combat order, if a lower-initiative player consumes an agility potion on the same round they were passed it, it will not able to increase their initiative higher than the player who passed them the potion.

11. If a player does not perform an action when they are capable of doing so, they will receive 1d5 damage. Each subsequent turn of inactivity will increase the die by 5, meaning the second turn would be 1d10, the third 1d15, etc.

12. The results of the round as well as the combat order for the next round (determined by new initiative rolls) will be posted by the Host at his discretion, though in a timely manner. The process will repeat until only one team remains.

13. At the end of the battle, the winning team will receive their prizes, and the betting spectators will either gain or lose credits depending on their wagers. This will all be recorded in a post at the Bank, and the relevant Bank accounts will be updated.

Classes

There are 14 classes in this game. Abilities with an asterisk* must be performed in offensive stance. I created the classes myself, so if you have any feedback on their balance, please let me know.
Classes
Alchemist
The Alchemist can only give potions to players who have an empty potion spot, and he may also keep them for himself if he has empty potion spots.
Make Health Potion: Creates a health potion. May be used once every four turns.
Make Strength/Defense/Agility/Luck Potion: Creates a strength/defense/agility/luck potion of the Alchemist's choice. May be used once every two turns.
Bard
Charm: The target cannot perform an action for two turns or until he takes damage.
Confuse: For the target's next two turns, their targets are chosen at random.
Fear: Decreases the target's offensive attacks/abilities on their next two turns by 5 damage.
Berzerker
Dodge: You have a 50% chance to not be affected by each action targeted at you for two turns.
*Rage: Deals 1d25 damage. Reduces your initiative on next round by 5.
*Sprint Attack: Increases initiative by 10 and deals 1d22 damage to the target.
Cleric
Bless: Increases the target’s attacks/abilities on their next two turns by 5 damage.
Heal Other: Heals the target for 1d10 HP.
Resurrect: Brings a dead player back to life with 1d15 HP. May only be performed once every 5 turns.
Commander
*Call to Arms: For up to three targets, increases their next attacks/abilities by 4 damage each and increases their initiatives by 5.
*Rally: For up to three targets, decreases their damage received from each attack/ability by 4 for one turn.
*Rout: For up to three targets, decreases their next attacks/abilities by 4 damage each and decreases their initiatives by 5.
Death Knight
*Cursed Blade: Deals 1d30 damage to target and 1d5 damage to self.
Sacrificial Healing: Heals the target for 1d15 HP, and deals 1d5 damage to self.
Unholy Wrath: Takes two turns. All damage you receive on the first turn, you deal to a single target on the second turn. Is not affected by target's defensive stance. Must be in offensive stance on second turn.
Druid
*Beast Form: Causes you to turn into a beast that may only perform regular attacks, which do 1d20+3 damage, and must stay in offensive stance. May attack on the same turn that you transform. You cannot control when you return to human form, but at the end of each turn, has a 50% chance to automatically return to human form.
Call Wolf Companion: Calls a wolf companion for one turn. You may have the wolf attack a target for 1d22 damage, or you may use it to absorb up to 20 damage targeted at you.
*Leech Life: Deals 1d15 damage, and heals you 1d5 HP.
Mystic
Receives two random abilities at start. After the use of each ability, it is replaced with a new random ability. The two ability slots have separate cooldowns, and abilities will be given to the Mystic through PM.
Paladin
Holy Ward: Decreases the target’s damage received from each attack/ability by 3 for two turns.
Pray: Increases damage dealt and decreases damage received by 2 for two turns.
*Smite: Deals 1d25 damage if the target's last action dealt damage to another player. Deals 1d12 damage, otherwise.
Ranger
*Double Shot: Deals 1d10 damage to two targets.
*Precise Shot: Deals 1d15 damage and reduces the target's initiative by 10.
*Rapid Shot: Increases initiative by 10 and deals 1d20 damage. Increases initiative on next round by 10.
Rogue
Evade: You take no damage and are not affected by abilities.
Set Trap: Choose an initiative value. Sets a trap that is triggered by the first enemy that rolls within one point of that initiative value, dealing 1d8+5 damage and preventing them from performing an action. Acts as a separate entity from the Rogue, so is not affected by damage-altering abilities.
*Sneak Attack: Deals 1d18+5 damage if you were not targeted on your last turn. Deals 1d10 damage, otherwise.
Sorcerer
*Acid Spray: Deals 1d15 damage, then on the next round deals 1d8 damage that is not affected by the target's defensive stance or ability.
Flame Cloak: Deals 1d20 damage to anyone who attacks you.
*Lightning Bolt: Deals 1d10+5 damage and has a 50% chance to deal 1d10 damage to a random enemy.
Warrior
Counterattack: Reduces damage taken by half. Deals 1d10 damage to anyone who damages you.
*Power Attack: Deals 1d23 damage.
*Whirlwind Attack: Choose an initiative value. Deals 1d10 damage to any enemies within 3 initiative of that value.
Wizard
Fortify Willpower: Reduces the current cooldown for a specified ability of the target by 2 turns.
Reflect: Any damage or abilities done to you, you do back.
Slow/Hasten: Decreases or increases target's initiative by 20 for one round, 10 for two rounds, or 5 for three rounds.

Beasts

Beasts come from the Bestiary (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=3846.0), a list of beasts created by members of Wintreath. Beasts in each wave will be chosen randomly and will target players randomly, performing only regular attacks. The number of beasts in a wave will be determined as follows: At the start of a wave, the total HP for beasts has to equal at least half of the total HP for the players.
Beast Stats
                             HP    Agility   Attack   Chance
Mino                       20       22       14         28
Golbinite Salthile      30       22       16         14
Wintrean Troll          35       20       16         14
Wintrean Wolf          35       24       20          8
Rhinotaur                50       22       20          7
Sabertooth Lion        40       26       24         6
Carniboar                45       24       24          6
Mountain Jaguar       45       26       22         6
Snow Tiger              50       24       22          6
G. Wintrean Termite  55       22       24         5

Agility and Attack stats are both the number of sides of the dice that are rolled in-game. Chance is the likelihood out of 100 that a beast will be selected next. To put the beasts' stats into perspective, a typical human arena combatant would have stats of 40, 20, 20, respectively.

STATS
HP: 20, Agility: 1d22, Attack: 1d14.

Minos are giant rat-like creatures that roam throughout the sewers and caves of Wintreath. They can vary in sizes: the smallest are about the size of a small child, while the largest are about the size of a large dog.
Goblinite Salthile
(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F_Fwjw80hPmio%2FTJdYq-RmfuI%2FAAAAAAAABwg%2FY3FrHNAwSH4%2Fs1600%2FGoblin-Drawing.jpg&hash=e787447ce7957944b11e35565b9af67f)
STATS
HP: 30, Agility: 1d22, Attack: 1d16

Goblinite Salthile are vile creatures that lurk in tombs, ruined houses, and on the highest peaks of the most northern mountains. Their diet mainly consists of bugs, small wolf cubs, and in quite large groups can also feast on an unsuspecting wanderer.
Wintrean Troll
(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uesp.net%2Ftamriel%2Fmonsters%2Fimages%2Fgoblinwarchief.jpg&hash=05b45db84f3fe0519d8f4b43ec86b6f3)
STATS
HP: 35, Agility: 1d20, Attack: 1d16

The Wintrean Troll is one of the most common creatures found throughout Wintreath. They often find shelter in caves and can be seen sacrificing animals or indeed humans to their gods. Troll society is primitive and violent and often poses a threat to the more advanced societies that surround them. Their flimsy weapons are often rust-coated, and if any caused injuries are not swiftly treated, they may cause gangrenous infections. Their primitive tribal communities often require that once a young Troll reaches the age of fourteen, their ears are pointed and bound with leather straps. To them, this symbolizes that they are reaching adulthood. There is not much else to comment on these simple beings other than if you are traversing the wilds of Wintreath to listen for the hoot of an ivory horn for this heralds the arrival of the Trolls.
Wintrean Wolf
(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fhative.com%2Fwp-content%2Fuploads%2F2013%2F09%2Fwolf-drawings%2Fwolf-drawing-10.jpg&hash=1b09f9284b5a046bb2972cd50f4d1902)
STATS
HP: 35, Agility: 1d24, Attack: 1d20

The Wintrean Wolf is a very feral wolf that won't hesitate to attack. They form groups of over thirty and all hunt together. When a very weak or unhelpful wolf catches some food or meat, then the others will take the food; however, if the weak wolf doesn't want to let go of the meat because he wants it for himself, then the other wolves will most likely eat him as well.
Rhinotaur
(https://paigeconnellyillustration.files.wordpress.com/2013/06/mm-sketch-3.jpg)
STATS
HP: 50, Agility: 1d22, Attack: 1d20

Rhinotaurs are peaceful herbivores who live in the Great Wintrean Plains, although they still are tough. Their actions are simple, really. When in danger, these animals ram their enemies to defend themselves. When in peace, they eat and raise their young. These simple beasts can be easily befriended by Wintreans, if they treat them well, that is.
Sabertooth Lion
(https://s-media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/736x/d0/38/7e/d0387eb516be6c616f0be814f1c4ec45.jpg)
STATS
HP: 40, Agility: 1d26, Attack: 1d24

The Sabertooth Lion is the result of the lion having to adapt to millennia of decreasing temperatures and harsher climates in Wintreath. As the savannas that they used to live in changed to forests, their fur has changed to black and red, allowing them to blend in with the shadows and leaves. Their teeth had adapted to be able to cut through the other animal's thick coats, helping them kill prey more easily. To this day, there are few left, but these animals are some of the most deadly, and they have no hesitation to kill.
Carniboar
(https://historymaniacmegan.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/erymanthian_boar.jpg)
STATS
HP: 45, Agility: 1d24, Attack: 1d24

The Carniboar is a giant, powerful animal that roams the plains of Wintreath. They are carnivores, and they eat anything that they can kill. Carniboars hunt in packs of 2 to 3, which is plenty to take on most prey. Although they are pretty strong, they can't swim, making only sea creatures that are close to the shore in danger of being eaten by these beasts.
Carniboars have one main predator: humans. They are commonly hunted as sport by Wintreans. One adult carniboar can provide a hearty meal for a whole family, and their furs are commonly used in most clothing, while their tusks are used as parts of fine jewelry.
Mountain Jaguar
(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.kimdiment.com%2FImages%252007%2FBW-Snow-Leop-07.jpg&hash=c62a0aafd8f1cb4c52e5ed3364a19e18)
STATS
HP: 45, Agility: 1d26, Attack: 1d22

The Mountain Jaguar was the result of the jaguar having to adapt to millennia of decreasing temperatures and harsher climates in Wintreath. Since the rain forests it once lived in had been destroyed by the cold, the jaguars needed to move elsewhere for shelter. This place was the mountains. They adapted to have thicker fur to survive in the freezing temperatures of the peaks. They slept in and raised their young in the caves that could be found on the sides of the mountains. These jaguars hunt whatever they can find up in their habitat and attack anybody or anything that would intrude on their territory, making the Wintreans give them the title of "The Mountain Guardians."
Snow Tiger
(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.lomion.de%2Fcmm%2Fimg%2Fcatgsnti.gif&hash=7ba59defa59ea5fac5698e1d84362079)
STATS
HP: 50, Agility: 1d24, Attack: 1d22

The Snow Tiger was the result of the tiger having to adapt to millennia of decreasing temperatures and harsher climates in Wintreath. Instead of finding a place where they could be dominant, they stayed in the plains, facing the tougher competition of stronger animals. These animals adapted to having white fur, allowing them to blend in with their surroundings. This gave them an upper hand against the stronger animals, allowing their packs to get the element of surprise against their enemies.
Great Wintrean Termite
(https://wintreath.com/forums/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2F3.bp.blogspot.com%2F-2Pqc6Bqkir0%2FUygYPcp2UPI%2FAAAAAAAABeQ%2FmBvzZFyI5PY%2Fs1600%2FGiant%2BTermite.png&hash=e0da034b080145f16ee4e0f21c3b2134)
STATS
HP: 55, Agility: 1d22, Attack: 1d24

Measuring between 2 and 3 meters in length, warrior termites (pictured) are ferocious adversaries that will engage any threat to the mound by chewing, biting, slashing, and trampling with their enormous mandibles and powerful spined legs. Iron and steel made from the thick metallic underbellies of warrior termites is considered among the finest materials used in the crafting of weapons and armor. Remorseless killers, once deployed from the mound's core a warrior will never return; it will rampage until its warm core has cooled. Likely due to its near brainlessness, it would not remember its way back through the labyrinthine tunnels even if it had the presence of mind to save some warmth for the return journey.

Post your actions in this thread rather than PM them to me. You're not fighting each other, so it doesn't matter if you see what each other are doing.
Hmm, wouldn't that be confusing for communications if every team is using the same thread? Though I suppose each team could still create their own private communications.
Signups will stay open through Monday, August 23.
I do believe you meant October?

And I don't believe I know what you're talking about. :D

I wasn't too concerned about it, but sure.

I am officially creating Team Water Balloon Fight, whose color shall be Silver to remember our defeat and draw inspiration from it - we were defeated once, but never again.
I also note that I'm pre-emptively accepting anyone who wants to join the team. We will not shun those who seek to join us.

I don't think I've ever seen or heard "triumvirate" in a sentence, although I know what it means somehow...
Good word choice! :P
for those who don't want to google it
tri·um·vi·rate
/trīˈəmvərət,trīˈəmvəˌrāt/
noun

1. (in ancient Rome) a group of three men holding power

I'll try to create my character for this game soon.

"Triumverate" is also more generally a group of three powerful or notable people or things existing in relation to each other. For example, "The Holy Triumverate" is a nickname for the band Rush as it's composed of three rock gods. But yeah, it derives from the Roman Republic, specifically Julius Caesar, Pompey the Great, and Marcus Crassus and then Octavian, Mark Antony, and Marcus Lepidus. I actually remember some stuff from college. :D

Bard
Rosashia Byrnweave

Charm: The target cannot perform an action for two turns or until he takes damage.
Fear: Decreases the target's offensive attacks/abilities on their next two turns by 5 damage.

Bard's Confuse seems useless if it can't make an enemy target their ally and enemies will target randomly anyway, so I'll take the other two skills. I'd hate to be a Mystic that got stuck with Confuse and Dispel.

I wasn't in the waterballoon thing since the +1 -1 things don't interest me much, so I'll just be in whatever other team forms.

if we were all on the same team though...

also, gerrick, now that i look harder at the classes;
did you intentionally not use multiple dice (e.g. 2d12 instead of 1d25)
are Mystic skills replaced (e.g. I get Dispel, I use it, I have a chance to get Dispel again; alternatively, I get Dispel, I use it, I do not get it again at the first draw, but the next time I use a skill Dispel is back in the list of possibilities) or can you just deplete the list
do blocks last across rounds; e.g I am fighting a Rhinotaur and behind it in initiative; Round 1, it attacks, I block; Round 2, it attacks, I attack - will my block from Round 1 last into its attack in Round 2, since I haven't been able to go yet to change my action since then?

I'm not sure if the game works with only one team.
13. At the end of the battle, the winning team will receive their prizes, and the betting spectators will either gain or lose credits depending on their wagers. This will all be recorded in a post at the Bank, and the relevant Bank accounts will be updated.
Say, reading over the rules again, I have some questions. They may have been answered already. When does the battle end? When there is only one team left, or when all monsters are eliminated? If the former, does that mean the monsters respawn? If the latter, how is  "winning" defined?

1. Yeah, it's just simpler when using RNGs. Though if someone has an argument why using multiple dice would be better, I'm willing to listen.
2. Each time you use a mystic skill, you have an equal chance of getting any ability on the class list. They don't get removed, and you still have a chance of getting the same one you just used.
3. Blocks do last across rounds. They last for one whole turn. A round is shared by everyone while turns are individual (from the time you act in one round until the time you act in the next round). So in your situation, you would not block the first attack but you would block the second. Another example: if you have the highest initiative in the first round and you block, and then you have the lowest initiative in the next round, the block occurs for your one turn but it effectively occurs for two whole rounds; conversely, if you have the lowest initiative on one round and block, then have the highest initiative on the next round, you've blocked for your whole turn but effectively didn't block anything. Make sense?
I'm not sure if the game works with only one team.

The battle ends when only one team remains. There are an infinite amount of monsters, which spawn in waves. A new wave spawns when all the monsters of the previous wave are defeated. So, yeah, I don't really know how a winner would be chosen if there were only one team.

The rules say that the game ends when there is one team remaining. Hence why I wanted there to be only one team, just to see what would happen. :D

And the rules also say that the monsters come in waves (and at the beginning of each wave we have a chance of getting potions).

"Hello, and welcome to the fourth game of the Arena!" the Host yelled out to the audience, which roared back with applause. "For this game, we searched far and wide to collect dozens of different creatures and monsters from all across Wintreath. Our two teams of combatants will fight off waves of these beasts until there is only one team left standing -- the classic battle of man versus beast!

"Now to our heroes! Our first team is the silver-clad Team Water Balloon Fight!"

The team rushed out from their entrance into the Arena, raising their swords and shields to the thundering shouts of the audience.

"Led by the Commander Martin Breakshield, the team includes the two Mystics Elbbsas the Reka and Hyrda as well as the Cleric Dr. Taurus Valeria, M.D., Ph.D.!"

The audience's booming screams and whistles continued as the second team ran onto the battlefield.

"Our second team is the golden Team of the Everlasting Sun! Led by the Warrior Yvonne the Merciless, the team includes the Ranger Wintermoot, the Bard Rosashia Byrnweave, and the Mystic Mathyland!"

The two teams acknowledged each other then formed up, both facing the far end of the Arena where an ominous, large metal gate stood. The audience began to quiet down.

"For our first wave of beasts," the Host announced as the gate began to lift, "our combatants will fight a powerful Carniboar, two barbaric Wintrean Trolls, a cunning Golbinite Salthile, and a vile Mino!"

The Carniboar, Goblin, and Mino rushed onto the battlefield, while the two Trolls, one with a chest painted red and the other blue, lurched forward together and roared.

"Let us begin!"

You have to be in offensive stance to perform Call to Arms (as well as the other Commander abilities), and you can't target yourself.

Ah, I see what you're saying. Yeah, you're all fighting the same enemies. I'll allow you to change your class if you want. Also, I'm changing Confuse to allow it so that the targeted enemy will randomly target anyone, including other beasts, if you want to switch for that ability.

This goes for anyone: if you want to change your class/abilities, you can do so this round (Mystics can't change their given abilities, though).

Erm, that was a typo. Players get 1d20, beasts get whatever their agility allows. When I was writing that up, I just added "and beasts" as I was using the old template, and I didn't read through that part well enough, I guess.

I evidently forgot the stance restrictions on Commander abilities, so, you know, mea culpa, but at no point do I see anything that indicates that I shouldn't be able to target myself. Arguably, the phrasing in 'Heal Other' suggests that I should be able to target myself, since
Heal Other: Heals the target for 1d10 HP. It cannot be casted on oneself.
(emphasis mine)
This suggests that 'target' does not inherently exclude yourself, or else you wouldn't have to specify 'cannot be casted on oneself'.

If that's non-negotiable though, then I'm considering a swap to either Ranger or Rogue, depending on your verdict on the following questions:
Set Trap: Sets a trap that will deal 1d8+5 damage to the first enemy player to enter defensive stance and decreases their initiative by 5 on the next round. Is not affected by the trapped player's block or defensive stance. Acts like a separate entity from the Rogue, so is not affected by abilities that are dependent on or would affect the Rogue: e.g. Smite, Flame Cloak, Counterattack, Reflect, or damage-altering abilities.
(emphases mine)
Does 'enemy player' mean this can only target people on other teams, or should this be interpreted to also affect monsters? (Obviously related question: can monsters even adopt defensive stances?)
Can the trap itself be targeted by abilities?

Unrelated to the previous quote: can players opt to delay their action (generally to better synergize with other players) - for example purely hypothetically Elb sees I am using Call to Arms on her, and opts to wait until after my turn to benefit from that. Is that allowable, or must you act exactly in the order that initiative demands?

Edit: If any clarifications need to be made (such as the one to Confuse as above) could you also please edit that into your post about the classes, since I for one and probably others besides use that as a quick reference guide?
Title: Arena Game 4: Team PvM
Post by: Gerrick on October 25, 2017, 11:49:26 PM
On targeting: The reason why it says you can't target yourself with Heal Other is more to emphasize the point that you can't heal yourself with it. Though I suppose that would be evident with the fact that it's called "Heal Other". I'll remove that sentence from its description.

The Rogue's Set Trap ability seems like it would be useless in this PvM game as (you're right) beasts can't defend -- and the Sneak Attack ability would be as well since beasts don't have abilities. Also, Ranger's Precise Shot wouldn't be as effective because beasts can't defend, and Wizard's Dispel is useless because beasts don't have abilities.

Consequently, I'm going to alter a few abilities:

Rogue's Set Trap: Choose an initiative value. Sets a trap that is triggered by the first enemy (beast) that rolls within one point of that initiative value, dealing 1d8+5 damage and preventing them from performing an action. Is not affected by damage-altering abilities, etc.
Rogue's Sneak Attack: Deals 1d16+5 damage if you were not targeted on your last turn. Deals 1d10 damage, otherwise.
Ranger's Precise Shot: Deals 1d15 damage and reduces the target's initiative by 10.
Wizard's Dispel Fortify Willpower: Reduces the cooldown of a specified ability of the target by 2 turns.

No, you cannot target the Rogue's trap. (And why would you?)

On delaying actions: Hmm, no since your abilities affect them for one turn regardless of whether that's this round (for those lower in initiative) or next round (for those higher).

I appreciate all the feedback from everyone. :D And I should've seen the class problems beforehand, sorry!

I'm going to extend this round until 1pm ET on Friday, October 27, to allow everyone to make changes if they'd like and to post their actions.

Idk on why you'd target a trap; I guess it's just because I run rogues a lot in TTRPGs so I'm used to seeing 'trap' and inferring 'I need to disarm it somehow'.
And to be fair, as far as delaying actions goes, I wasn't really asking with the intention of synergizing with someone else, but with the intention of switching to Rogue and exploiting RAW for Evade to delay the action in the turn after that to be the very last possible action to ensure I could act without any threat to myself.

To be perfectly unambiguous though: abilities which say 'Targets' mean 'you cannot choose yourself as one of those targets', correct?

And I'll assume everyone is ok with their classes and abilities since nobody said they wanted to change them.

I'm going to start writing up the round results, so until I'm finished writing it up, I'll still allow Mathyland to send in his action and anyone to change their class/abilities. After it's posted, though, everything will be locked in.

Round 1

Almost simultaneously, the Mino charged at Martin Breakshield, biting him for 10 damage, and the red-painted Wintrean Troll attacked Hyrda with its axe, dealing 6 damage.

The Mystic Hydra then gave a loud Rally cry to his teammates, temporarily boosting their defenses.

Dr. Taurus Valeria the Cleric attacked the red Troll, slashing at it with his sword and dealing 16 damage.

The Warrior Yvonne the Merciless got into a defensive stance and prepared to Counterattack any possible incoming attacks.

The Goblinite Salthile eyed Yvonne then attacked. It thrust its sword, barely nicking her forearm for 1 damage, then she quickly counterattacked back, dealing 4 damage.

The blue-painted Wintrean Troll attacked Taurus with its axe, but it didn't even seem to cut him thanks to his increased defenses from Hyrda's Rally.

The Bard Rosashia Byrnweave moved into a defensive stance and cast a Fear spell on the Carniboar. A red haze appeared around its head, causing it to whimper for a few seconds.

The Carniboar then turned towards Taurus and ran at him. Still fearful, it didn't run as hard as it could have, and when it attacked the Cleric, his enhanced defenses helped mitigate the damage down to 11.

The Mystic Elbbsas the Reka clasped her hands together then slowly pulled them apart, revealing a ball of electricity. She then aimed at the red Troll and released the Lightning Bolt, which dealt the Troll 10 damage then jumped to the nearby Goblinite Salthile and dealt it 10 damage as well.

The Commander Martin Breakshield yelled out a Call to Arms, temporarily strengthening his teammates' attacks.

The Ranger Wintermoot pulled out his bow, aimed at the Mino, and made a Precise Shot. The arrow pierced through both of the Mino's back legs, dealing 12 damage and crippling it.

To punish inactivity this game, trainers of birds of prey were brought in to the Arena and stationed near the Guards' Box. The Mystic Mathyland had not moved this round, so the Chief Guard signaled to one such trainer, who, standing next to the perch with his large hawk, pointed at Mathyland. The hawk flew from its trainer, swooped down on the Mystic, scratched him with its talons, dealing 4 damage, then flew back up to its perch.

Round 2

Dr. Taurus Valeria and Hyrda, both invigorated by their teammate's Call to Arms, prepared to attack. Taurus quickly downed his Health Potion, then nodded to Hyrda. The Cleric targeted the Mino, while the Mystic targeted the red Troll, and together they ran and drove their swords deep into their enemies, both of which let out screams. Pulling their swords out, the two beasts fell down, dead.

Mathyland attacked the injured Goblinite Salthile, lunging at his with his sword and dealing 6 damage.

Rosashia Byrnweave used her other spell, charming the unharmed blue-painted Wintrean Troll. The Troll slowly changed from its angry, barbaric self to become more calm and docile. It lowered its weapon and began to shuffle about, not caring about the battle going on around it.

The Carniboar, still fearful, charged at Mathyland with its sharp tusks, dealing 14 damage.

The Goblinite Salthile attacked Martin Breakshield, but his increased defenses reduced the damage to only 3.

Martin attacked back at the Goblinite Salthile, cutting it with his sword and dealing 5 damage.

Elbbsas the Reka and Wintermoot -- both with their targets already killed this round -- prepared for the next round.

Yvonne the Merciless, however, didn't move at all. The Arena guard sent his hawk to attack the inactive player, dealing her 5 damage.

Round 3

The badly injured Goblinite Salthile ran at Taurus Valeria and attacked, weakly swinging his sword and dealing only 1 damage.

Rosashia Byrnweave quickly raised her shield, preparing to block any incoming attacks.

Wintermoot decided to attack the still uninjured Carniboar, which was doing the most damage to the combatants. He slashed he sword at the beast, dealing 10 damage.

Dr. Taurus Valeria switched to a defensive stance and drank a Luck Potion. He jogged over to Martin Breakshield, his most injured teammate, and rubbed his hands together while muttering an incantation. A warm glow emanated from the Cleric's palms, which he then placed on Martin, healing him for 9 health.

Mathyland drank his Health Potion then spotted the passive Wintrean Troll standing still and obliviously staring at the ground. He walked up to it, raised his sword, then brought it forcefully down on the Troll's back, dealing an impressive 19 damage. The Troll screamed out, waking up from its stupor, and prepared to fight again.

Martin Breakshield bellowed out a powerful shout, Routing the remaining beasts.

The blue-painted Wintrean Troll, frightened by the shout, hesitantly attacked back at Mathyland, dealing a reduced 3 damage.

The Carniboar, also frightened, nervously ran at Elbbsas, dealing a reduced 3 damage.

Elbbsas the Reka tossed her Health Potion to Taurus then targeted the nearly dead Golbinite Salthile. She ran up to it and swung her sword, opening the beast's throat and causing blood to spurt out. It fell back, dead.

Hyrda then attacked the Carniboar with his sword, making a deep cut in its side that dealt 17 damage.

Yvonne the Merciless again did not move. Consequently, the Arena guard again sicced his hawk on her, dealing 1 damage.

Round 4

Mathyland got into a defensive stance and pulled out his empty potion bottle. Seemingly out of nowhere, the bottle began to fill up with the familiar green liquid of a Health Potion. He then put the potion back into its slot on his belt.

Wintermoot pulled out his bow and aimed at the legs of the Carniboar with a Precise Shot. He loosed the arrow, which lodged itself in the beast's back leg, dealing 6 damage and crippling it.

Rosashia Byrnweave again cast a Fear spell on the Carniboar, making it less aggressive and therefore reducing its capacity to deal damage.

Elbbsas the Reka got into a defensive stance and raised her shield in a block.

The Carniboar got ready to attack and began to run towards Rosashia. As it neared the Bard, however, it grew more fearful, slowing its speed enough that Rosashia was easily able to jump out of its path.

Hyrda drank his health potion, bringing him nearly back to full health, then he targeted the Wintrean Troll, hoping to finish it off. He swung his sword, which sliced deep into its chest, dealing 14 damage.

Dr. Taurus Valeria, seeing that the beasts were almost defeated, got into a defensive stance and prepared to block any possible attacks.

The blue Troll, barely hanging on to life, shuffled over to Taurus and swung its axe, which the Cleric easily blocked.

Neither Martin Breakshield nor Yvonne the Merciless moved this round, so two Arena Guards sent their hawks to incentivize them. One hawk quickly flew by Martin, scratching him for 1 damage, then met up with the other at Yvonne, and together they attacked her for 7 damage.

Round 5

The blue-painted Wintrean Troll, in a last ditch effort, let out a yell then ran towards Rosashia Byrnweave. It took its axe with both hands and swung it at her. She tried to jump back, but the axe met her leg, dealing a reduced 6 damage.

Elbbsas the Reka and Martin Breakshield made eye contact then together jogged towards the Troll. Elbbsas attacked first, swinging her sword upward and making a a huge gash from its upper chest into its throat. Just as Martin was about to attack, the Troll finally fell back dead.

With only one beast left, Hyrda attacked the Carniboar. He ran up to it from the side and plunged his sword between its many tusks and horns through its eye, the blade coming out the other side. The Carniboar immediately slumped over on its side dead.

Seeing the last beast of this wave die and knowing that the next wave would shortly be let out, Rosashia raised her shield and peered over it at the huge metal gate the new beasts would come out.

Mathyland held his sword over his arm and made a cut, dealing himself 5 damage. He then sheathed his sword and began to mutter the incantation for a Sacrificial Healing as he wiped the blood away with his hand. He walked up to Yvonne the Merciless and rubbed the blood across her arm, which slowly seemed to soak up the blood, healing her for 6 health.

Taurus Valeria, seeing his target killed, prepared for the next wave of beasts.

As it was the end of the round, the Arena Guard's hawk seemingly knew it was again time to attack. Of course it was correct as Yvonne and Wintermoot didn't move, so its trainer gave it the order, and it flew down and attacked the two for 2 damage each.

"And that's the end of the first wave of beasts!" the Host announced. "Our combatants seemed to easily cut through them, so let's see what else we can throw at them!"

A man without armor scurried onto the battlefield with a handful of potions. As Elbbsas, Hyrda, and Taurus were the only ones with an empty potion slot, he each handed them a potion, each of which happened to be a health potion.

Just as the potion man made it back off the field, the beast gate began to open. Out of the darkness stepped a Carniboar, Sabertooth Lion, and Rhinotaur.

Round 6

The Sabertooth Lion sprinted at Rosashia Byrnweave and pounced. The Bard held her shield up, blocking the initial attack, but the Lion still managed to knock her over hard for 5 damage.

Elbbsas the Reka drank her Luck Potion then attacked the Sabertooth Lion, dealing an increased 9 damage.

The Carniboar then charged at Elbbsas and rammed a couple of its smaller horns into her, dealing 16 damage.

Mathyland, seeing that attack and feeling his health wain, drank his Health Potion and raised his shield in a block.

Hyrda got into a defensive stance then raised his hands toward the Carniboar. He then cast a spell on the beast, Confusing it so that it does not know who to attack.

Martin Breakshield raised his sword and shouted out a Call to Arms to his teammates, strengthening their attacks.

Taurus Valeria then used his increased strength to attack the Sabertooth Lion. He brought his sword down powerfully on its side, dealing 21 damage.

Rosashia cast a Charm spell on the Rhinotaur, causing it to relax and become peaceful so that it did not attack anyone.

Wintermoot pulled out his bow, nocked two arrows, and aimed at both the Carniboar and the Rhinotaur. He then released his Double Shot at the two beasts, dealing 3 and 6 damage, respectively. As it was attacked, the Rhinotaur woke up from the spell and became aggressive again.

Round 7

Rosashia Byrnweave cast another Fear spell -- this time on the Sabertooth Lion.

The Lion then began to cautiously run towards Martin Breakshield. It swiped its sharp claws at him, dealing a reduced 12 damage, then ran away.

The Carniboar charged determinedly straight at Taurus Valeria. It lowered its head as it got closer, then at the last second it forcefully bucked its head up, stabbing several of its larger front horns directly into the Cleric's lower torso, dealing an immense 24 damage.

Hyrda, hoping to finish off the Sabertooth Lion, attacked it. With his increased strength, he ran at the beast and brought his sword down on its head, cutting it down for good.

Wintermoot attacked the Rhinotaur, chopping into its thick hide for 13 damage.

Taurus slowly made his way to Elbbsas the Reka and placed his hands on her shoulders. A warm glow emanated from his palms as he Healed her for 4 health. Elbbsas thanked her teammate and prepared for the next round since her target was already dead.

Martin, facing the two living beasts, gave a terrifying shout, causing them to Rout.

The Rhinotaur guardedly trotted towards Rosashia and prepared to knock her down as it neared her, but the Bard easily leaped out of the way when it got within striking distance.

The Arena Guard's hawks again flew out and attacked Yvonne the Merciless and Mathyland, scratching the two with their talons for 12 and 6 damage, respectively.

Round 8

The Rhinotaur charged at Mathyland. The Mystic jumped out of its direct path but still got hit, reducing the damage he took to 6.

Hyrda attacked the Carniboar, cutting it side with his sword for 8 damage.

The Carniboar, still confused and frightened, anxiously ran towards Yvonne the Merciless, but she easily hopped out of the way, so the Carniboar scurried away.

Wintermoot then pulled out his bow and aimed at the Carniboar. He made the shot, which sent the arrow into the beast's foot, crippling it and dealing 3 damage.

Elbbsas the Reka and Martin Breakshield together prepared to attack the Rhinotaur. Martin first drank his Health Potion, then they went in for the strike. Whether it was caution or the beast's armor-like skin, the two dealt it only 4 and 1 damage, respectively.

Dr. Taurus Valeria drank a Health Potion then raised his shield to protect himself.

Rosashia Byrnweave followed suit and also raised her shield in a block.

Yet again, the Arena Guards sent their hawks out to punish Yvonne and Mathyland. This time, however, the hawks seemed to want more than just to give a scratch. In an almost synchronized fashion, the hawks swooped down on their victims and began to peck and tear at their faces and chests. The combatants tried to swat away at the birds with their swords and shields, but it was to no avail. The hawks continued their attacks until Yvonne and Mathyland had fallen over, and then they continued to eat at them a little more, making sure they were dead and at the same time having a little treat out of their meat. The hawks finally looked up to their trainers, who were frantically waving them to come back, and then they screeched and flew back to their perches.

"Well, there are our first combatants' deaths," the Host announced solemnly. "Such an unfortunate way for them to go. If only they had continued to fight, they might have lived." He paused, then continued, "I earnestly urge our remaining combatants to fight, not just to prevent their deaths by our fearsome and seemingly overenthusiastic birds of prey, but to entertain your audience and fight for glory! Now, let us continue!"

Hmm... Hypothetically, I suppose so. Though it's also a bit different from attacking an enemy that would be killed in the same round as you wouldn't know that it'd die (because RNG). But anyway, I'd allow it.

Round 9

Elbbsas the Reka got into a defensive stance and passed her final Health Potion to Dr. Taurus Valeria. She then ran over to the body of Yvonne the Merciless, removed the Health and Strength potions from her belt, then fit the potions into her own belt.

Rosashia Byrnweave cast a Charm spell on the Rhinotaur, causing it to become passive. It then slowly walked over to a small patch of grass that grew from the ground and began to eat.

Seemingly from nowhere, Hyrda pulled out a strange-looking bow that was somehow hard to focus one's eyes on. Along with it, he also pulled out two arrows that appeared to be made of the same material. He nocked the two arrows, aimed at the two remaining beasts, and released the Double Shot. The arrows flew and hit their targets, dealing 9 damage to the Carniboar and 3 to the Rhinotaur, which woke up from its Charm spell. The bow and arrows then disappeared as if they never existed.

Martin Breakshield attacked the Rhinotaur with his sword, cutting it for 3 damage.

The Carniboar charged at Elbbsas, but she managed to throw herself out of the way at the last second.

Taurus drank one of his Health Potions then jogged over to the corpse of Mathyland and took the Strength Potion for himself.

Wintermoot targeted the Carniboar and attacked, slashing it with his sword for 11 damage.

Round 10

Elbbsas the Reka drank her Strength Potion then attacked the Rhinotaur. She took her sword with both hands and made a large gash in the beast's side, dealing 17 damage.

Rosashia Byrnweave cast a Fear spell on the Carniboar, causing it to lower its eyesight and slowly back itself into a wall.

Hyrda, hoping to finish off the Rhinotaur, attacked, swinging his sword up through its neck. Blood quickly spurt out, and after it fell down, blood continued to slowly spew onto the ground.

Dr. Taurus Valeria and Wintermoot watched as their target died. Taurus drank a Health Potion, then the two combatants each got ready for the next round.

With only one beast left, Martin Breakshield attacked the Carniboar with his sword, dealing 9 damage.

The Carniboar, scared and just barely alive, feebily tried to attack Rosashia, but she was able to avoid it.

Round 11

Martin Breakshield ran to the Carniboar and planted his sword down deep into its spine, killing the final beast instantly.

Elbbsas the Reka cast a Haste spell on Martin, making him feel quite a bit quicker and lighter on his feet.

Hyrda tossed Taurus his Health Potion, and then he, Wintermoot, and Rosashia Byrnweave each got into a defensive stance and raised their shields in preparation for the next wave of beasts.

Dr. Taurus Valeria downed the Health Potion, thanks to his teammate, then jogged over to Elbbsas. He again spoke the words that would cause his hands to glow, which he placed above the Mystic to Heal her for 8 health.

The same squirrelly man with the potions from the end of the last wave came rushing onto the battlefield. He promptly tripped on the ground, sending the three potions scattering and rolling away from him. A burst of laughter and applause came from the audience as he quickly gathered the potions back up in his arms and continued on with his job. He tossed Health Potions to both Martin and Elbbsas and a Defense Potion to Taurus. Hyrda gave the man a glare since he didn't get a potion, but the man apologetically shrugged and ran off the field.

"Haha, alright then!" laughed the Host. "Two waves down and two combatants down. Let's open up the gate and see what's in store for our next wave of vicious beasts!"

The huge metal gate slowly creaked open as two Minos -- one black and one white -- scurried out into the Arena. A Wintrean Wolf and a Mountain Jaguar followed not far behind.

I had been operating it using the former since that's what the description says, but thinking about it, the latter makes more sense since it wouldn't really make sense to give an attack buff one round and initiative buff the next. I'm going to change the descriptions of Call to Arms and Rout so that the initiative buff takes effect at the same time that the attack buff does rather than the initiative buffs occurring on the next round.

Martin Breakshield, with his increased agility, stepped towards the beasts and gave a thunderous shout, causing the Mountain Jaguar, Wintrean Wolf, and black Mino to Rout and run away.

The black Mino then turned back towards the combatants and cautiously ran to attack Elbbsas, but she easily dodged the attack, causing the Mino to scurry away.

Rosashia Byrnweave cast a Charm spell on the Mountain Jaguar, which then laid down and began to lick its paws.

Wintermoot pulled out his bow and aimed at the Wolf for a Precise Shot. He released the arrow, which hit the Wolf's back leg, dealing 11 damage and crippling it.

Hyrda cast a spell on Taurus, Fortifying his Willpower so that he may immediately cast his healing spells.

The white Mino attacked Wintermoot, biting his leg for 11 damage.

Dr. Taurus Valeria drank his Defense Potion then jogged over to Martin and cast his Heal Other spell on him, healing him for 10 health.

Elbbsas the Reka suddenly began to grow larger and hairier, transforming into her Beast Form. She ran to the white Mino and slashed it with her large claws, dealing 9 damage. She then slowly shrank back into her human form.

The Wintrean Wolf, crippled and scared, tried to attack Taurus, but he easily leaped out of the way of the attack.

Quote
The second number is the additional roll, which is solely to determine who comes first between those with equal initiatives. The first number is the actual initiative.

Please? I, for one, would be very interested. We have yet to have a proper DnD-like RP with dice and stuff. Anyone else who brought it up before thought that forums were not a conducive medium for DnD, so it's never happened.

Dealing with intiative rolls... okay that's it, after all this is done I'm offering to do a DnD like RP of some sort, if anyone is interested and if I've been here long enough to be trusted not to leave Wintreath within a week of starting it.
Please? I, for one, would be very interested. We have yet to have a proper DnD-like RP with dice and stuff. Anyone else who brought it up before thought that forums were not a conducive medium for DnD, so it's never happened.
I don't understand why people say that...when I was in Spiritus, Wuufu ran a wonderful DnD-inspired RP on the forums there which ran just fine. I think some people prefer voice or text chat for RPs like that, but there should be no reason that it couldn't work here. I'm always open to ideas for making the forums more conductive for anything we're doing, too.

Round 13

Martin Breakshield passed his Health Potion to Taurus then attacked the black Mino. He ran then stabbed it deep in its back for 19 damage, nearly killing it.

The Mountain Jaguar, still under Rosashia Byrnweave's Charm spell, continued to lie on the ground and watch the battle taking place before it.

Rosashia cast another spell: this time a Fear spell on the Wintrean Wolf. The Wolf whimpered and took a few steps back.

Hyrda ran over to the gravely injured black Mino and cut it down, quickly ending its life.

The Wintrean Wolf attacked Elbbsas the Reka. It jumped towards her, though not as aggressively as it would have, and bit her arm, dealing a reduced 10 damage.

Dr. Taurus Valeria drank his Health Potion, then Elbbsas gave him another. Together, the two targeted the white Mino for an attack. Taurus attacked first. The Mino reared back onto its hind legs, perhaps in a failed attempt to scare its attacker, so Taurus took the opportunity to plunge his sword into the beast's chest. Pulling his sword out caused the wound to spurt out blood and the Mino to let out a groan before dying. Elbbsas nodded to Taurus then prepared for the next round.

Worried since his hawk had already killed a combatant, the Arena bird handler nervously let the hawk go attack Wintermoot. It gladly did, dealing him 8 damage, then flew back.

Still not really sure what the incentive is to attack at all, after an NPC gets dropped, it doesn't really matter which team attacked, or finished it off, and dealing more damage doesn't help one team more than the other, the way it's setup right now, only incentive is to survive.

The incentive is mostly 'the less attacks there are, the less attacks are coming my team's way'.
For you, that calculus makes sense - there's only a 1/3 chance you or moot will be attacked for each creature. For us, that's a 2/3 chance. Which makes it some tragedy of the commons shit, that you're mostly just trying to kind of sit there and tank while we're doing a large part of the murdering, but mathematically it still strikes me as the best solution.
Probably a better implementation would have been to have each team in their own separate arena, fighting separate monsters, and thus providing each team with an incentive to be killy, instead of whichever team loses fighters first being mathematically able to simply play defensively - and rather than separating it into waves of enemies, instead enemies just keep rolling in at predetermined points (every ~5 rounds seems like a good guess), meaning you can't just kill everything but a mino and then tank it out for the rest of the game, you have to be continually killing or else you're going to get overwhelmed.

Round 14

The Mountain Jaguar sprinted at Martin Breakshield then pounced. The beast landed several scratches on the Commander, dealing 20 damage, then ran away.

Rosashia Byrnweave raised her shield in a block.

The Wintrean Wolf went to attack Taurus, but it got more fearful as it neared him. It ended up landing the tiniest scratch, dealing just 1 damage.

Martin Breakshield, Elbbsas the Reka, and Dr. Taurus Valeria together coordinated an attack on the Mountain Jaguar. They circled the beast, and then one at a time they swung their swords at it as it turned its back on each of them, dealing it 5, 8, and 13 damage, respectively.

As neither Hyrda nor Wintermoot acted this round, the Arena Hawk flew down and scratched at them with its talons, dealing 5 and 10 damage, respectively.

The Mountain Jaguar attacked Taurus, scratching him for 5 damage.

The Wintrean Wolf attacked Elbbsas, biting down on her ankle several times for 18 damage.

Wintermoot pulled out his bow and released a Precise Shot on the Wolf. The arrow hit one of its legs, crippling it and dealing 10 damage.

Rosashia Byrnweave then cast a Charm spell on the Wolf to prevent it from attacking back. It wandered off and began to lick its wounds.

Dr. Taurus Valeria prepared another Healing spell for Martin Breakshield. He placed his glowing hands on him, healing him for 4 health.

Elbbsas the Reka raised both of her hands toward the Mountain Jaguar, casting a Leech Life spell on it. Slowly, the beast began to cry out in pain as a dull reddish-purple light pulled from out of its body, dealing it 7 damage, then floated over into the Mystic, healing her for 3 health.

Martin drank his Agility Potion then yelled a Call to Arms to his teammates, temporarily boosting their strength and agility.

Again, the Hawk flew into the Arena, lightly scratching Hyrda because of his inactivity for 1 damage.

Anybody have any ideas how to speed this game up? Shall I just throw a bunch of beasts at you this next wave? Or should I open up a secret second door that releases two separate waves that the different teams have to fight as you suggested (though I'd understand that it might be too late for that, and we can try that in a different game)? Or something else completely different? Or are you all alright with us just continuing to chug along?

I'm a fan of splitting the teams up when the wave ends. Better to at least trial it in this one before attempting to implement it in future ones.

Although actually I've got a couple half-baked ideas for PVE arena games, one of which could honestly be a PVPVE one if I can work out how to properly implement it, if that sparks any interest.

 Round 16

Dr. Taurus Valeria attacked the Mountain Jaguar. With his increased strength, he chopped down on the beast's neck, nearly severing its head.

Martin Breakshield, thinking this wave of beasts would be ended this round, raised his shield in anticipation for the next wave.

Elbbsas the Reka, who had planned on targeting the now dead Jaguar, tossed her health potion to Taurus then prepared for the next round.

Wintermoot attacked the Wintrean Wolf, stabbing his sword in its side for 9 damage.

Hyrda quickly followed and attacked the Wolf, swinging his sword at its head and killing it.

Rosashia Byrnweave was going to target the Wolf but now prepared for the next wave of beasts.

With the wave over, the potion man ran onto the battlefield and handed both Martin and Hyrda a Health Potion. "Sorry!" he whispered to Elbbsas as he ran back off the field.

Just then, the big metal gate the beasts had been coming out of opened. Instead of beasts charging out, though, Arena Guards armed with spears and shields poured out in single-file. They separated the two teams of combatants, who confusedly faced the guards and prepared to fight them. The Guards, however, began to form a human wall through the middle of the battlefield, dividing the Arena in two.

"Calm down, everyone!" yelled out the Host. "The Guards aren't there to fight you. As you may have noticed, your two teams have been separated from one another by this wall of Guards. To liven up the game, you will now each battle your own beasts! And do make sure to be on the offensive; we will continue to send out more waves of beasts even if you have yet to kill off the current one. Good luck!"

Out of the gateway where the Arena Guards just came out, a Mino, Sabertooth Lion, and Great Wintrean Termite ran toward silver-clad members of Team Water Balloon Fight. The smaller gate on the opposite side of the Arena where the combatants themselves had first appeared then began to open, and another Great Wintrean Termite entered the battlefield towards the golden members of Team of the Everlasting Sun.

11 - Sabertooth Lion
8 - @taulover
4 - Mino
2 - Great Wintrean Termite

19 - @Aethelia
13 - Great Wintrean Termite
4 - @Wintermoot

So each team is now fighting their own waves of beasts. New waves will appear every 4 rounds -- this is subject to change if it's too frequent or not frequent enough. If you defeat your wave early before a new one would spawn, then you'll have a chance to get potions from the Potion Man just as before -- so that's an incentive to kill it asap. A new wave will spawn as soon as you kill the wave, though -- no waiting around doing nothing if you kill it early.

How beasts are determined, in case you're wondering
Which beasts are in each wave is determined randomly just as before with a roll of the die. The number of beasts is a little different, though: where before each new wave's beasts' health had to be at least half of the total players' health, now it's at least half plus 10 health for each living player. Because 2 players with 40 health each is worse off than 4 players with 20 health each since the former will deal less damage than the latter, the extra 10 health per living player is meant to account for the difference.

Here's how the last wave was determined:

Total player health=196. 196/2=98. Beasts' total health must be at least 98.
Roll Mino (health 20, 20<98). Roll Mountain Jaguar (health 45, 20+45=65<98). Roll Mino (health 20, 65+20=85<98). Roll Wintrean Wolf (health 35, 85+35=120>98). Beasts in wave determined.

Here's how this next round's waves were determined:

Team Water Balloon Fight total health=96. 96/2=48. 48+(4*10)=88. Beasts' total health must be at least 88.
Roll Mino (health 20, 20<88). Roll Great Wintrean Termite (health 55, 20+55=75<88). Roll Sabertooth Lion (health 40, 75+40=115>88). Beasts in wave determined.

Team of the Everlasting Sun total health=38. 38/2=19. 19+(2*10)=39. Beasts' total health must be at least 39.
Roll Great Wintrean Termite (health 55, 55>39). Beasts in wave determined.

Let me know if you can think of a better way to determine beasts in each wave.

Also, just to make clear for future reference, because Elbbsas and Aethelia's targets were dead before they could perform their abilities, they didn't use them. They will be able to use the same abilities again this next round.

The round will end around 1pm ET on Tuesday, November 28.

Now I have an incentive to use Fear, as I'm not equally reducing damage to both teams, and then can attack next turn, as there is incentive to take out the NPC's that aren't just as much as threat to the other team.

Gerrick, hypothetical scenario.
One of us (not Tau), dies. Tau uses Resurrect. Does this give the resurrected person an action that round, or is it sort of wasted being dead and then coming back from that?
(Incidentally in my head it's more of a 'healing someone who's mortally wounded' rather than a straight-up resurrection, because then it's like...well shoot the moment this ends, are all of Team Sun going to be resurrected (because we're not gonna lose obvs) afterwards as a 'well you lost, but hey you're alive again!' kind of deal?)
I ask because it doesn't actually say on the Resurrect power.

Hmm, I'll say no, the resurrected person does not get an action on the same round that they resurrect. Looking back, the precedent has already been set in Game 1 that they can't (http://wintreath.com/forums/index.php?topic=3844.msg82829#msg82829), but also because then they'd be able to attack someone without being able to be targeted themselves since everyone will have already sent in their actions (though I suppose that's not the case when fighting against beasts, but it's easier to just set the standard that they can't for the future, plus coming back from the dead takes a lot out of you or something).

(And no, if you die, you dead.)

Round 17

Team Water Balloon Fight quickly huddled together and decided to attack the largest beast of the wave, the Great Wintrean Termite. The four then formed up.

Elbbsas the Reka attacked first. She ran then jumped towards the Termite and brought her sword down on it, performing a Power Attack that dealt 13 damage.

Hyrda downed his defense potion then went into a Rage, swinging his sword furiously at the Termite for an incredible 22 damage.

Martin Breakshield yelled out a thunderous roar, Routing the three enemy beasts.

Dr. Taurus Valeria followed up with a final attack on the Termite, dealing 17 damage.

The three beasts, frightened, attacked back at the combatants.

The Sabertooth Lion pounced on Elbbsas, knocking her over. It then proceeded to bite and tear at her face and neck until it was satisfied with her death.

The Mino attacked Taurus, biting him for a reduced 6 damage.

Finally, the Great Wintrean Termite, gravely injured, attacked Martin for a reduced 14 damage.

On the other side of the Arena, Rosashia Byrnweave cast a fear spell on the lone Great Wintrean Termite.

The beast attacked back at Rosashia, though its fear and the Bard's defensive stance reduced the damage to 12.

Wintermoot did not act this round, so the Hawk flew down and attacked him for 6 damage.

Round 18

The Mino attacked Taurus, biting him for 10 damage.

The Great Wintrean Termite attacked Martin Breakshield, barely scratching him for only 2 damage.

Dr. Taurus Valeria drank his Health Potion then ran over to the body of Elbbsas and held his hands outstretched over her. He spoke words that caused his hands to glow as they do when he heals. Several seconds went by as the glowing around his hands grew and the wounds on the Mystic's corpse slowly began to close. The Cleric's hands shook and he noticeably struggled until suddenly Elbbsas gasped for breath. She blinked and tried to catch her breath, clutching her now healed neck. Taurus reached out his hand, which Elbbsas took to stand up.

Just then the Sabertooth Lion ran to Martin, attacked him, and killed him the same way he did to Elbbsas the previous round, tearing out his throat.

The Arena Guard trainer sent out his Hawk to attack Hyrda, and it scratched him several times for 10 damage.

Wintermoot drank his Health Potion then grabbed his bow and performed a Precise Shot on the Great Wintrean Termite. The arrow landed in one of the beast's legs, dealing 5 damage.

Rosashia then attacked the Termite stabbing it for 7 damage.

The Great Wintrean Termite cautiously limped over to Wintermoot then jumped at him and snapped its powerful jaws shut on the Ranger's torso. Wintermoot yelled out as the beast clamped down, breaking his spine and killing him.

"What an amazing series of events this round!" the Host announced almost excitedly. "Two killed and one brought back from the dead! The Team of the Everlasting Sun is down to its final member. Will Rosashia somehow survive before the other team is killed? Let us continue and find out!"

Edit: Hey Gerrick, because there are guards in the middle of the arena, are we now unable to pick up the potions of the opposite team?

Round 19

The Mino attacked Taurus, jumping at him for a bite at his chest, but the Cleric shifted his weight back so that the beast only bit his forearm for 4 damage.

Hyrda tossed his Health Potion to Taurus then targeted the Great Wintrean Termite. He ran to it and swiftly plunged his sword down into where he assumed its brain was. Regardless of whether or not he was correct, the beast finally died.

Elbbsas the Reka somehow materialized a hazy shape that looked like a bow, similar to Hyrda's from several rounds ago. She nocked what looked like two arrows then released the Double Shot at the Mino and the Sabertooth Lion. The arrows hit their targets for 5 damage each, then the bow and arrows disappeared.

The Sabertooth Lion attacked Hyrda, scratching him with its claws for 10 damage.

Dr. Taurus Valeria drank his Health Potion then ran over to Hyrda, held his hands over him and healed him for 6 health.

On the other side of the Arena, the Great Wintrean Termite attacked Rosashia Byrnweave, stabbing her with one of its huge spiked legs for 15 damage.

Rosashia badly injured -- but not going down without a fight -- attacked back. She swung her sword at it but dealt only 3 damage.

When exactly do the new beasts spawn? Is it at the end of a round or the start of a round? I'd assume the end but I'd like to double check. Also, am I correct in assuming the spawn at the end of this round, or have I badly miscounted?

Maybe for next time, you can have it so waves spawn when one side clears theirs. That would be good incentive to defeat the NPCs first. Then you don't need a static number and there's a little more reason to pay attention to the other team.

Correct, beasts spawn at the end of rounds. And yep, another wave will spawn at the end of this round.

That sounds like a good idea -- makes it so I don't have to try to figure out what number works best. The only problem I could see is that it could cause a snowball effect so that whichever team is the first to clear the first wave would likely have an advantage for the rest of the game, but I guess that could just be part of it.

Well, perhaps if that were the case, then the beasts of the previous wave could possibly be cleared when the new wave begins?

Sorry, could you elaborate?

Using the newer rules from the teams division (see below), if you kill the rest of your beasts this round, then yes, you will get more potions.
If you defeat your wave early before a new one would spawn, then you'll have a chance to get potions from the Potion Man just as before -- so that's an incentive to kill it asap.

As in, perhaps the any remaining beasts in the other team would also be removed from the game.

Ah, so we only get potions if we kill them early? I thought that that statement just meant that we'd get the potions early.

Hmm, but then the team that's behind could just play defensive since their waves will just be removed when the other team kills theirs.

Right, it's a reward for eliminating the wave early. I can see how you could read it like that, though.

Round 20

Elbbsas ran over to Martin Breakshield and -- just as Taurus had done to her -- held her hands out over the Commander's corpse. Slowly, his wounds began to close. Martin then suddenly began to cough and gasp for air as Elbbsas helped him to stand up.

The Mino attacked Hyrda, biting and scratching him for 11 damage.

Dr. Taurus Valeria drank his Strength Potion then attacked the Sabertooth Lion, slashing it with his sword for 16 damage.

Hyrda cast a Holy Ward on Taurus, enveloping him in a protective cyan light.

The Sabertooth Lion then attacked Taurus, but its claws were unable to penetrate the Ward.

On the other side of the Arena, Rosashia Byrnweave, hoping to bide her time as the other team tried to fight off their beasts, cast a Charm spell on the Great Wintrean Termite. The Termite looked at her but had no urge to attack her, so it just stood and clicked its giant mandibles.

On both sides of the Arena, the gates began to open. Both teams anxiously looked to see what would come out as they had not yet defeated their current waves. From Team Water Balloon's gate came a giant Snow Tiger and a Mino that appeared to have lost an eye. From Rosashia's gate came a lone Wintrean Wolf, which growled at her.

Oops, yeah, I fixed Hyrda and Taurus's stances. I have 2 separate spreadsheets -- one with the calculations and one with the results (what I show to you all) -- and I forgot to update the stances on the results one.

And since the Great Wintrean Termite it charmed for the next round, Aethelia, only the Wolf will attack you. Since it has a 1d24 attack rating, then there is a 1 in 24 chance that you survive this round if you're in offensive stance. If you're in defensive stance, there's between a 2/24 and 11/24 chance that you'll survive, depending on what you roll for your defensive stance reduction (unless I've fudged up all of that math).

Round 21

The Mino attacked Hyrda, but since the Mystic was in a defensive stance, he reduced the damage to only 2.

Martin Breakshield drank his Health Potion then shouted at the Sabertooth Lion, Snow Tiger, and one-eyed Mino, Routing the beasts.

The Sabertooth Lion attacked Elbbsas. Despite her defensive stance, the beast used its claws to tear open the Mystic's face and throat, killing her.

Hyrda cast an Evade spell on himself, making it so that none of the beasts could successfully attack him.

The Snow Tiger, frightened, attacked Taurus Valeria, though his ward reduced the damage to 15.

Taurus then raised his shield to block any further attacks.

The one-eyed Mino attempted to attack Martin, but still scared, it scurried away before it could.

On the other side of the Arena, the Great Wintrean Termite continued to stand about in its Charmed state.

The Wintrean Wolf growled at Rosashia, who stood still and appeared to accept her fate. The Wolf charged and jumped on the Bard, chomping down on her limbs and torso until she was finally dead.

"And with that, our long game is over!" the Host announced. "Congratulations to our victors, Team Water Balloon Fight! Thank you all for attending our first beasts battle, and come back for our next game!"
