So, this was introduced in XKI, and I think it'd be fun to play here as well. To explain it simply, here's a quote from Aternox:
Spyfall is a party game unlike any other, one in which you get to be a spy and try to understand what's going on around you. It's really simple!
at the start of the game all players receive pms showing the same location — a casino, a traveling circus, a pirate ship, or even a space station — except for one player who receives a pm that says "Spy" instead of the location. Players then start asking each other questions — "Why are you dressed so strangely?" or "When was the last time we got a payday?" or anything else you can come up with — trying to guess who among them is the spy. The spy doesn't know where he is, so he has to listen carefully. When it's his time to answer, he'd better create a good story!
At any time during a round, one player may accuse another of being a spy. If all other players agree with the accusation, the round ends and the accused player has to reveal his identity. If the spy is uncovered, all other players win. However, the spy can himself end a round by announcing that he understands what the secret location is; if his guess is correct, only the spy wins.
I've attached a file with all the possible roles, and a link to the full rules is here (pdf download) http://boardgamegeek.com/file/download/ph89mrfa2h/Spyfall_rules_ENG.pdf (http://boardgamegeek.com/file/download/ph89mrfa2h/Spyfall_rules_ENG.pdf)
Spyfall takes up to 8 players total.
Here's some rules to remember:
Each non-spy player is pmed a role and location. All locations sent will be the same, and all roles will be different but logical to be located at the location. The spy's pm just tells them that they are a spy.
A randomly selected player is chosen to go first. This player will ask any one other player a question about their location or role. That player will answer the question and ask any other player a question. In other words, you may not ask the player who asked you a question a question.
At any time, the spy may publicly reveal their role and take a guess at the location everyone is at. If they are correct they win, if they are wrong everyone else wins.
At any time, a player may claim another player is the spy and start a vote. If all other players vote that the player is a spy, that players roles is revealed. If they are a spy, everyone else wins. If they are not the spy, the spy wins.
And to throw an example of how a game can go:
Anne, Juan, Maria, and Isaac find themselves in the
crusader army. However, Anne isn’t aware of this
because she got the spy card. Juan gets the Knight,
Maria the Squire, and Isaac the Archer. They all play
their parts and try to identify the spy. Anne’s goal is
to identify the location without blowing her cover.
Maria the Squire asks the first question: "Isaac,
do you remember which sea we took a dip in yesterday?“
Isaac the Archer naturally names the Mediterranean,
and Anne the spy takes notice: the location
could be the beach or the pirate ship. Isaac can’t ask
Maria, so he asks Juan, "Juan, when do we get paid —
is it at the beginning of the month, or the end?“ All
the other players are on the alert, since the question
might identify Isaac as the spy. However, Isaac is
just sounding out his fellow players. Since Juan is
a knight and not a spy, he answers the question
easily: "Who knows? We’ll get paid whenever the
commander feels like paying us.“ Anna the spy is
thoroughly confused — now she suspects the location
might be the military base or the submarine.
Juan asks her next question: "Hey Anne, what did
they serve for dinner yesterday? I couldn’t make it.“
Anne is evasive: "Oh, you know, the usual stuff — potatoes, nothing special.“ This is where other players
start to suspect her of being the spy — as crusaders,
they’re well aware that Columbus won’t be bringing
that particular plant back from the New World for
another three hundred years or so...
And attached to this is the business cards to give you an idea of all of the possible locations and roles that exist in the game.

I'll play
-
A fascinating game...I'm curious, why only up to eight people?
-
It coincides with the number of roles. If you look at the attached PDF, there's a total of 8 roles (1 spy, 7 non) for each location.
I think it also has to do with the questions and answers. The more people you have answering questions, the easier it is for the spy to pick up on it and figure out where they are.
-
Sapphiron signs up
-
I see...I'm curious, can the spy claim another player is the spy?
-
I hadn't thought of that. Considering this is more a game of questions rather then a game of accusations like Werewolf (aside from a player choosing to accuse someone at some point and bringing it to a vote), that one never really occurred to me.
I suppose it's possible that the spy could stop the questions themselves and bring the thread to a vote...but at the same time I think I'll say no on that one. Considering it wouldn't entirely be fair to the spy to accuse someone knowing full well they're the spy (though voting alongside is a different story)...especially since they can stop the thread themselves to publicly announce their role and make a guess at the location.
-
Well, it sounds interesting...sign me up. :D
-
I'm in...
-
Sounds fun, I'll play
-
That makes 5 players. Only 3 more and we can have a complete set. :D
-
Eh, may as well. :P
-
I'll join in if you end up having room for me.
-
But of course. And we can begin even though it's only 7 people. I'll send out the PMs right away.
Once you've gotten your PMs, then Sapphiron can ask the first question. Remember that questions and answers can be as simple and as vague as your want as long as they relate to the location and your role. The point is to answer as you would in your role, but you don't want to give away either your role or location to the player that's the spy. Since you don't know who that is unless they slip up or reveal themselves, that means you'll want to play mind games with them while still keeping with your role and the given location.
And remember that votes against a player must be unanimous (save for the person being voted against). If the votes are correct or the spy incorrectly guesses the location, then the players will win the game. But if the player voted against is not the spy, or if the real spy reveals themselves and correctly guesses the location, then the spy will win the game.
-
Thanks for letting me in :)
-
No prob. And all PMs have been sent! Once again, Sapphiron, once you've read your PM, then you may choose someone and ask them the first question.
Good luck everyone!
-
Wintermoot, do you like the horses?
-
Yes! Very much so. :)
Reon, do you recall the weather yesterday?
-
It was fucking awful, Moot. Below 30° and overcast. I nearly lost my hands, I swear!
Chanku, how did the cops treat you on Friday?
-
They treated me rather fine.
Hugsim, When do you get paid?
-
Well, it's non-standard, to say the least. Not once every month like an ordinary job.
Colberius X, what did you eat yesterday?
-
I tried a little bit of everything... There are so many options! :))
Aternox, what did you think of the entertainment yesterday?
-
The noise was a bit distracting, I was trying to concentrate on my latest work.
Chanku, how did you get here?
-
I walked here.
Sapphiron, what did you think about the weather yesterday?
-
Thought it would be something like Skyfall.but no no no nothing.
-
The weather yesterday was a big meanie. My body kept shaking.
Hugsim, do you like fishing here?
-
Absolutely, even if it's a bit boring that you have to release the fishes.
Wintermoot, do you like to go swimming here?
-
OOC: Pengu, do the questions have to be specifically about the location or plot, or can I ask about a previous question someone asked?
-
OOC doesn't apply in a game. :P You'll want to ask me via PM questions that you're unsure about.
To answer this one though, questions should always be related to location and garnering of someone's role, no matter what yours is. They can be as vague and specific as you want, but the point is to confuse the spy while still answering about your location/role. You can ask any questions you want whether or not someone has already asked it, but asking a question already asked and answered may garner some unwanted eyebrow raising.

Are we training to become future agents?
-
...no. This is a game. So stick around and watch and please let the game continue. :P You can talk about it once it's over.

ok ._.
-
It's still on you Wintermoot, with this being the question that was asked by Hugsim:
Wintermoot, do you like to go swimming here?
-
I had forgotten about this. :P
No, actually I don't.
Chanku, since you're so interested in repeating my questions, what did you think of the weather yesterday?
-
The question repeat was accidental, however the weather was okay, could have been a little better though.
Hugsim, what did you eat yesterday?
-
I didn't have time to eat much since I'm very busy right now. I had time to eat a bit of ice cream though.
Sapphiron, what's your favourite thing about this place?
-
I like to ride on the vroom vroom!
Aternox, how often do you come here?
-
I come here most days, but it depends on the weather and how much free time I have.
Chanku, what is the area around this place like?
-

Chanku, what is the area around this place like?
Well there's snow on the ground.
Wintermoot, what did you think of the weather yesterday?
-
I for one actually enjoyed it.
Reon, what are your plans for today?
-
I am going to start a vote for Chanku being the spy.
-
I will vote for Chanku as the Spy.
-
I will also vote for Chanku as the spy.
-
Wintermoot, I was planning on bundling up heavy today and doing something easy like a duck or some mascot.
Aternox, what do you think of the play lineup for this year?
-
OOC: Reon, there's a spy vote atm. :P
-
I choose not to vote for Chanku.
OOC: thought I could still answer and ask questions during a vote...
-
OOC: I don't know myself, I just wanted to make sure you hadn't missed it.
-
Questions are technically stopped during a vote. Though if Reon chooses to answer a question rather than voting, that would technically be like saying that he chose not to vote, which he did later vocalize.
And all votes must be unanimous, so the game continues.
-
Reon, I might pop by and watch some of The Bard's works.
Chanku, how far would you have to travel to get to the nearest town or city from here?
-
I'd imagine it shouldn't be too far.
So Hugsim, how has your day been?
-
I want to start another vote for Chanku being the spy. His last answer was suspicious.
-
I vote for Chanku as the spy.
-
I vote for Chanku as the spy.
-
Yep, I'm on board this time. I vote for Chanku as the great ebul.
-
I will also vote Chanku as the spy.
-
In a vote of 5 to 1, Chanku has been voted as the Spy.
Chanku's role was...a man on break from work!
The location was: Central Park!
And your spy was....Wintermoot!
Congratulations to Wintermoot for stealing the win away.
And in retrospect Chanku's last answer actually wasn't that suspicious: The nearest town/city would have been New York City, since it's literally surrounding the park. Considering one would have to simply walk out of the park and thus be in the city, it really wouldn't be too far unless you were already deep near the center.
Likewise, I'm a little surprised that you started the first vote against Chanku, Ater. :P Considering the XKI's 2nd-to-last Spyfall game was also in New York (Statue of Liberty), and snow was a weather answer as well. :P
Other people's roles were:
Aternox: A Painter in the Park
Sapphiron: A Little Girl with her dog
Hugsim: A Stall Vendor
Reon: A wandering actor in Costume
What were your thoughts on the game? what worked? What could be improved on? Would you play again?
I'll echo Ater's thoughts and say that I was a little surprised at how descriptive some of the questions were. I was expecting Mooty to pick up on being in a park, and with everything everyone was describing, I was thinking that he'd catch up on it being a specific park right away. I don't know if he actually picked up on it, but he did well enough to where nobody started a vote against him.
I was also slightly amused that Chanku's first question to Hugsim was a payment question, which was understandable given Chanku's role...but was amusing because of Hugsim's role (whereas if he asked Sapphiron, it would have been related to her parents giving her an allowance perhaps).
-
Ah shoot, Wintermoot was my number 2 guess. The reason I was voting for Chanku was because his most of his questions and answers seemed like they were based of things other people had already said. Also, the last two questions I asked were attempts to trip him up and he didn't quite answer them with what I was expecting someone in the know would say. What I was expecting was some allusion to central park being surrounded by a city, but the snow comment seemed like it was just something based off someone else's answer.
I think Hugsim, Sapphiron and Reon had all answered things in a way that made it obvious they knew what was going on. Sapphiron's opening question was really good I thought, as it wasn't something the spy would ask but didn't give much away.
I'm curious to see where Wintermoot thought we might have been.
Good game everyone, I'm keen to play again :D
-
Wait, a minute... Am I irrelevant? :'(
-
No you're not. I just made a little error apparently. :P I added Ater to the list, but apparently it didn't add him, so I was always under the impression throughout the rest of the game that there were only 6 players.
My bad. :-[
Everyone can take turns trying to guess Colberius X's role.
-
Dun dun dun! :o
Actually, I never had a clue where we were specifically...the closest I'd gotten was a town or city in the winter. My primary strategy was to lay low and hope someone else would appear suspicious, and that person was Chanku in the end...in fairness, his repeating the same questions and generic answers made it understandable. I would have thought he was the spy too if I hadn't already known for a fact that he wasn't. :P
Wintermoot, do you like the horses?
I thought this was going to be the shortest game ever when this was the very first question. Knowing the location and roles, I'm still not sure what horses Sapphiron's talking about here, but I suppose it threw me off by making me think it was in the past or perhaps in a rural town.
Wintermoot, do you like to go swimming here?
By this point it had become obvious that the weather was horrible, so it made sense to not want to go swimming here.
Wintermoot, what did you think of the weather yesterday?
And again, it had become obvious what the weather was, and knowing that I like cold snowy weather this was easy to answer.
-

Actually, for her role that was the perfect question to ask. I'm assuming she was going for the fact of horse and carriages being a rather common thing in New York and especially around central park. And being a little girl, that'd be something that she'd most definitely notice.
-
I actually wasn't aware of that. :P
-
Really? You should watch more kids movies centered in New York. :P You see them all over in those movies, and they had to pull that from somewhere. If you watch a Simple Wish, the main character's dad actually earns a living that way. :P
-
Aww, so it was Wintermoot. :P
-
Didn't know there was horses in Central Park either... I was very confused.
And Chanku I see what you were likely trying to do in keeping it vague and trying not to give anything to the spy but in doing so you also didn't give anything to your fellow members...
In this game, a note to all people, a better strategy is to tip off the ones around you that you know what's going on because no matter what we all start out with a lot more power and knowledge than the spy...
-
Fast games are strong games and spy fall should always be quick...
Congratulations to Wintermoot for winning...
-
I did some quick research (http://www.centralpark.com/guide/activities/horse-drawn-carriages.html) on Central Park. ;)
-
I never realised you could fish in central park, so I almost started a vote over that.
-
It's a catch and release location only... Barely real fishing...
-
I did some quick research (http://www.centralpark.com/guide/activities/horse-drawn-carriages.html) on Central Park. ;)
This is one thing that is usually encouraged in Spyfall, especially if locations and possibly roles are very specific like this one was. The more info you have on the place you've been assigned, the more you can use at your disposal to throw the Spy off track.
And considering locations have no set prerequsites outside of the fact that they must be something that a spy could guess (so time periods are open to interpretation as well), it can end up becoming a necessity (if the location was Middle Ages England, and people were assigned as real people from that era, for example)
-
So I'm curious, what are the prospects on another game?
-
I'd play again :)
-
Well I figured I'd let someone else take the reins of hosting next game, since the idea of how it's played is pretty much out there. :)
