Title: The Free and Cheap Games Thread
Post by: Wintermoot on September 27, 2014, 11:18:20 PM
A thread for everyone like me that's wanting free and cheap games! :)

For example, Bejeweled 3 is free for a limited time in EA's Origin Store. This requires that you have the Origin client, which is kind of like Steam, but clunkier. I remember when the first Bejeweled got big during my first term in college, and we would all play it in class trying to beat each others' high scores, so this is a bit of nostalgia for me. :P

Velvet Sundown (http://store.steampowered.com/app/307290/) is currently free on Steam. It's a mystery game relying on text-to-speech commands and multiplayer to solve a case; the game is still in Beta, very much akin to The Ship. Played a bit and, while, we failed in finding the proper evidence to point fingers at the killer, it was a pretty fun time. Warning: As this is still very much a Beta game, expect a few glitches. I've ran into the minor one of a second pause before what I had typed out was spoken by my character. The tutorial is also lacking; you'll learn as you go.

But, yeah, save for that, quite fun. c:

NetHack (http://nethack.org/) is an open source turn-based ASCII RPG that has been in development from 1985 to 2003. The game has randomly generated dungeons and an incredible variety of monsters, items and classes. Everything interacts with everything else, in too many ways to mention. If you can think of a way to combine items, the devteam almost certainly has thought of it as well. There are many ways to deal with any situation, but there are also many different dangerous situations. This makes it an incredibly deep and interesting game. It is one of my favourite games of all time.

Claw (http://kapitanpazur.piasta.pl/en/downloads.html) is a very difficult and very fun abandonware platform game. It requires insane timing at some points, and it was one of the few games I never managed to finish. Frustrating, but fun. Not freeware, but it's in IP hell and will never be sold.

Startopia is a humorous game where you develop an abandoned space station. The station is visited by 9 alien species, all with their own tastes and specialties. These are your workers as well as your costumers. The station is divided into three specialized decks, and your costumers need all three of them. The game is made by former employees of the legendary Bullfrog Games, who left after that developer WAS FUCKING DESTROYED BY EA BASTARDS BASTARDS BASTARDS BASTARDS!

The game is now seven bucks on Steam.

Fall from Heaven II (http://kael.civfanatics.net/) is not a standalone game, but a mod for Civ IV that turns it into a very well realized fantasy world. It combines the strong mechanics of Civilization with the excellent worldbuilding of its designer, Kael. The whole thing is brilliantly done - there are 21 civilizations, all with a unique theme and playstyle. There are golem-building dwarfs, pirates, ultraviolent savages, evil clowns, gods-hating humans and many more. I spent more time playing this mod than normal Civ4. This is also one of my favourite games.

It's a rogue-like, but it's not multiplayer. The 'Net' part refers to the network of volunteers who created the game.

Paradox Interactive Sale on Steam: October 2-6

Pretty much deep sales on almost their entire catalog, from Majesty to Europa Universalis IV and everything in between. Not sure what I'm going to do with this one...Majesty was an excellent game, and had this awesome twist of not being able to control your units. On the other hand, I need to pick up some DLC for other games...

Not sure why the webpage doesn't show all the sales, but they do all show up in the Steam client.

Magicka is only 2.49 now. It is a coop action-RPG where you and your friends make up a party of up to four wizards. You can combine 8 different elements into many kind of spells. For example, adding fire sets enemies on fire, lightning makes it jump from person to person, arcane adds a beam effect... Part of the fun is that spells can harm your teammates too, so you'll end up accidentally killing each other a lot. Fortunately there's a resurrection spell, so it's no big deal.
You can also cast as much as you want - no fussing with mana, willpower or spell slots. It's pure chaotic fun.

Mount and Blade is free on gog.com for the next 48 hours! This is the first title of the series, but the other titles (Mount and Blade: Warband, Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword, and Mount and Blade: Warband - Napoleonic Wars) are also 60% off, or 75% off when buying all three!

An excellent opportunity to get into this awesome franchise on the cheap. :)

The Humble Origin Bundle is still going on! For a few dollars you can be a good variety of games...the only downside is that you need Origin for most of the game, but that's probably why EA is doing this...to give people incentive to go to their store/game platform. :P

I bought it mostly for Dragon Age II, though I'm curious to see the other games they're going to add...

This train has already left the station, but let me tell you a story.

Once upon a time there was a crazy month for Xbox Live Gold -members. I have acquired for only the subscription fee the following titles: Bioshock Infinite, Terraria, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Army of TWO: The Devil's Carter and Gears of War: Judgment. Five games for just seven euros, three of which I actually want to play and the rest aren't too bad either.

Why? How? I don't really understand how Microsoft runs this Gold thing, and at this point I'm too afraid to ask, but I like it. I checked and they only seem to hand the AC IV and AoT to for free right now. I'm expecting to get one more free game before my subscription ends again, but honestly this is already way more than what I signed up for. :D

It's because they're in constant competition with Playstation Plus.

One month, Playstation Plus had Ducktales Remastered, Duke Nukem, Prototype 2, Infamous First Light, a good indie game known as Swapper, and a mediocre one known as Whoa Dave.

But we're talking PS3 had 3 very well known and played games and a excellent Indie title, and then the same Indie Title and a much appreciated prequel-game for the PS4.

February's included Thief and Yakuza 4, two exceptional games as well, and Transistor being an excellent futuristic RPG by the people that did Bastion.

March's had an exceptional Sherlock Holmes game, Papo and Yo (another fun one), Oddworld New and Tasty, and two entertaining Indies known as Valient Hearts and Counterspy.

And April's is best easily forgotten.  :P

May's hasn't officially been revealed yet, but I'm curious as to what will be on it.

My point, however, is that the two are always competing.  PS has balanced its Indie and AAA games and shown that it can release good ones of both for its PS+ members.  The only way for Xbox to counter that is have a large list of AAA titles.

My only gripe is that PS4 sees much more indie titles than anything else, but that's most likely because it has a smaller library to grab from.  I'm hoping for a complete AAA title month for PS4, but that'll probably be down the road later on.

I just thought I'd point out...the Humble Bundle has a Heros of Might and Magic bundle out, which seems to have almost every game in the franchise. The average price ($11.49) is a good bit higher than for most others bundles, so I'm not sure if I'll get this one yet or not...

Damn, it even has Might and Magic 1-6.  All it's missing is M&M 7-9

And you can snatch a few others as well as M&M 10 if you pay a tad higher than the average price.

Curious why 7-9 aren't included in the bundle at all if the others are.

I must say, Blizzard must be low on ideas if they're making what's essentially going to be seen as a League of Legends clone.  And if they charge people to play it, I have a feeling it's going to get a lot of backlash considering LoL, which has been around for quite some time and gathered a large fanbase, is free to play.

Considering that the entire genre started with the Defense of the Ancients mod for Warcraft 3, Blizzard's probably kicking themselves for not developing a game in the area much sooner. On the other hand, League of Legends has only become insanely lucrative in the last few years, so given the timing Blizzard may choose to go with the same freemium model, as they've already done with Hearthstone.

Also, most games are clones in some way, shape, or form...for years after Dune came out in 1992, RTS games were called Dune clones. :P

For reference, Heroes of the Storm is only similar in that they are both Mobas with four ability character schemes.
Right now they're doing a paid beta scheme which is questionable...
And the game overall is hugely unbalanced and unpleasant to play. Regardless of my league bias it is true that a lot of it comes off as infantile or weird despite more than a few cool character schemes and designs.

I'm in the middle of downloading Dungeon Siege right now. It originally came out in 2002 and the gameplay reminds me of Diablo 2 or Fate. It looks pretty fun. I got it for free, but you can buy it on Steam for $6.99 or get the entire series for $19.99.

It has a few expansions. I got one, Legends of Arranna. It also supports up to 8 people so that could be fun. :P

There's a lot of new Humble Bundles lately:

The Paradox Interactive Bundle: Depending on how much you want to spend ($1-$15), this pretty much covers all their main series and some others to boot, with more games to be added later. I'm not personally sure if I'm going to get it since I already have most of the games on there, but if you'd like to get into series like Magicka, Crusader Kings, Hearts of Iron, or Europa Universalis this is your chance to get started. I guess you can by the many DLCs later on. :P

The RPG Edition Book II Bundle: I'm honestly not familiar with all the games in the bundle, but to me the standout  is Fate. If you're looking to get into the exact same game, I'd recommend Torchlight over Fate...Torchlight/Torchlight II is a newer series from many of the same people behind Fate (plus some from Diablo II, the true classic in the genre), and you can often find them on sale these days. Geeze, I can't believe they're trying to sell a text-based RPG and a RPG-themed pinball game...have the 80s returned?

There's also a Spring Sale going on in the Humble Store, and they have some so-so deals. If you haven't picked up Civilization V, you can get it and all the DLC for $12.49, which is about as good as recent Steam sales. Otherwise, I haven't found the sale to be very impressive, but they're putting out new sales every day through Thursday if you want to check them out.

Fate was an interesting game to say the least.

Although Torchlight was monumentally better when it came out...probably because of the D2 people that helped with it.  I have yet to play Torchlight 2 since it's not a console game.

Post by: Wintermoot on May 15, 2015, 06:14:47 AM
It certainly was eccentric, lol...who would have thought of having a Diablo-like game with fishing? Still, Fate probably would have been a much more successful game if it'd had multiplayer ability. At the time that it was released, Diablo II was still the main game in the genre mostly due to its multiplayer.

Reon and I recently completed a run-through of Torchlight 2, and it's not bad. In terms of mechanics, it's more or less an expansion of Torchlight with entirely new classes. I would say out of the current generation of aRPGs, the area that it stands out is modability...it was made to be modded as extensively as anyone wanted. I personally find the graphics a bit cartoonish, though that could be because to me D2 is still 'the classic' that good aRPGs should follow.

Partially for those reasons, I think Path of Exile is probably the best aRPG of the current generation. It's an online game, but areas outside of towns are instanced so it's not quite a MMORPG, but the best thing about it to me is how you can customize your characters skills, stats, and abilities...you have skill gems that grant your character skills regardless of class, a skill map that all classes share (though different classes start in different areas), and the ability to find and get all sorts of different items. Plus it holds true to the D2 theme. The only downside is that it arguably caters to hardcore players, especially at the endgame.
Title: The Free and Cheap Games Thread
Post by: Michi on May 15, 2015, 03:59:48 PM
I think the thing that killed it for me with the first game was that you were confined to one dungeon and a town.

Now, that was okay with Diablo because it was an older game and was still experimenting quite a bit to where a one-area dungeon type of game seemed like a good idea to them.

Fate, however, came when Diablo 2 was already out, so them copying the idea but changing it into a "cave" makes it seem like a complete Diablo clone with some added features, to where it seemed they were like "Oh, you liked the first Diablo?  Well here's our version, and it's much better."

And granted it did have some good ideas such as having the companion pet and, as you said, fishing.  But really?  :P

And that's probably why they opted for a more cartoonish look for D3 rather than the gritty-hardcore realistic type of looks that they were building up in 2.  Torchlight became pretty successful to where it was considered almost a spiritual successor to the series despite them being completely different games.  So I imagine the makers of Diablo saw and capitalized on the fact that people loved the graphics especially, and thus Diablo III was made in that style.

Personally, I didn't mind the graphics of D3 in the slightest, but I know some people were pretty disappointed in the fact that it was more cartoonish than realistic, which they considered a "downgrade" compared to 2.
Title: The Free and Cheap Games Thread
Post by: Wintermoot on May 15, 2015, 04:04:11 PM
I haven't actually played D3, so I can't comment on it. I think Fate was a game that was put together as quick and as cheaply as possible...thus, the lack of multiplayer and the one dungeon setting. Torchlight carried this on, because it was meant as a 'practice' game for making a future Torchlight MMO, which became Torchlight 2 instead.

I will say that I consider Path of Exile the true spiritual successor to Diablo II. I'm trying to get Reon to play it with me, but he hasn't been in the mood for it yet. :P

See, I also like D3.  While, yes, it's quite a bit different compared to 2 and , I welcome the change.  You don't want to keep the same formula for too long since people will get bored, and with the way the style was changing with upcoming games, I think they made the correct change.  Did it have problems?  Well yes, but most big name games do these days, and Blizzard is no exception.  Could they have done more?  Sure, but for what it is, it works.  It answers quite a few questions that the first two games left, and goes back to even explain the plot in those two a bit better for both new players and returning players alike.  They make it so you can backtrack to the other games for nostalgia purposes, but not for clarification purposes.

On the other hand, there's a reason that classic games become classic games, and many sequels have lost their way by trying to reinvent themselves unnecessarily (SimCity, anyone?). I think Path of Exile has struck a good balance of trying new things while remaining true to the things that people loved about D2, and the fact that the company is making money off it in spite of offering a free game that's funded only through 'ethical' micro-transactions (no XP-boosts, etc) says a lot about its success.

Well that's partly true as well.  But banking on the success of a popular game by creating the exact same formula for its sequels is always a horrible idea, because it will always be even more critically compared to the other game as it would if they had played with the mechanics a bit.  People would comment about the graphics being a bit stale for this time period and that Blizzard needs to step up their game, they'd comment on the lack of originality since the game itself would play the same, and arguably everything that happened in D3 would translate poorly if it was done in D2 style.

I think what makes PoE successful is because it took what made D2 good, and made it into an MMO...something many people wanted with D2 once it came out.  Even with D3, the multiplayer is slightly limited in the sense that you don't proceed throughout the game as you did with D2 multiplayer.  If I'm correct (since I've never actually done it), you can only do a chapter at a time, rather than going through the progression.  But I'm only speaking of online multiplayer...it might play far differently in local.

Just to clarify, PoE is not a MMO...it's an online game with the towns serving as 'lobbies' of a sort, but once you leave town the entire Act is instanced to you and your party, much like D2/D3. In some ways it's even better than a MMO because you have the community and activity in town to do things like item-trading and economy stuff, but you still get the intimate experience of just having you and your party out in the world. You're not competing with others for kills or grinding areas. I think the choice to do it like that was very innovative, but there could be more improvements made...building up guilds, for example.

Actually I hope to eventually find at least one person to play PoE with...I love the aRPGs, but they're the sort of game that's so much better having at least one companion to play with. I probably would have never finished Torchlight II on my own without Reon. :P

Ohhh, okay, gotcha.  I heard from some that it's an MMO, and that it's not, so I was a bit confused and thought it purely was.

If I had a better computer that would play it, I'd happy play PoE with you.  I really need a better system.  <.<

Amazon is having a sale on the Starcraft II Battle Chest...$19.99 for both Starcraft II titles, and a strategy guide that is included. Probably not cheap as defined for this topic, but sales on Blizzard games seem to be rare so I thought I'd include it. Note that this is a boxed version, meaning it has to be shipped to your home and then you install it from physical media like you had to in the old days.

Game sales abound just about everywhere though, as everyone tries to wrap up their own game sales before Steam launches theirs. :P

Spintires (https://www.indiegala.com/store/product/spintires/263280) for only €6.21. It's great fun with friends (has multiplayer up to four players the last time I checked), and that's the best deal I have seen so far.

I'd been on the fence for awhile, but I took the plunge and subscribed to the Humble Monthly Bundle. In a digital incarnation of services like LootCrate, the Humble Monthly Bundle promises to send you a new bundle of PC games each month, but you won't know what the games are until they're sent out. So far, as far as I know reaction has been negative, due to the relatively high price and the fact that only 5% is going to charity, but I'm thinking of it a different way.

They're promising in part to include games that have never been in a bundle before...between the higher price and the far lower amount going to charity, that leaves them with more money to pay the game publishers, which I'm betting they will be able to parlay into bundles with better games, and for the price that's what I'm expecting. If there's at least one or two moderately big titles per bundle, or several popular indie or early access games, I'll be happy. If nothing else, those who subscribe for the first month are getting The Legend of Grimrock II right away, which is currently listed at $24 on Steam, so you're at least getting something!

The first Humble Monthly Bundle came out a couple days ago, and it was superb. Absolutely worth every dollar, you got:
Legend of Grimrock II: A game that harkens back to ye olde days of first person real time grid based dungeon crawlers, absolutely fantastic.
Saints Row IV: There's a dildo bat.
Towerfall Ascension: Think platforming arcade game with limited ammunition and fantastic physics. You have Towerfall.
Lethal League: Smash Bros meets baseball meets eargasmic music.
Valkyria Chronicles: A turn based tactics RPG with perma-death and a neat artstyle!
Besieged: You make siege engines and kill people and blow up shit with it. Or, do what I do and try to break the game's physics engine.
Sanctuary RPG: An ASCII turn based RPG that *gasp* has enough complexity in it that it doesn't feel like a boring grind fest! Also, it's rather funny.

Seriously, Grimrock was worth the price of admission, and Lethal League should not be missed. Unfortunately, the bundle's over, but fortunately you can sign up for the next one! If it's even a tenth of the quality of this one, it will be absolutely worth it.

Indiegala (https://www.indiegala.com/attraction) has particularly interesting bundle now, 17 old games for as low as $3! Special price only for the first 24 hours! (Do you think they might hire me as a salesperson?)

But seriously, that bundle has gems like Death Rally, Wacky Wheels, Raptor: Call of the Shadows and Crystal Caves.

If I remember correctly, the initial game is now free, but you still have to buy the expansion if you want access to its content. When it first went free to play, Reon and I tried it...I found it boring, but in fairness he seemed to love it.

I mean, I used to love the Steam sales...looked forward to them, would refresh every few hours for the flash sales, would vote on the games they should offer for sale. I liked how dynamic and interactive the sales were, but now you have none of that and the sales aren't even that great. When they changed it up, Steam said it was about making the sale more accessible to everyone so they wouldn't have to keep checking for new sales, but it feels like it was a nod to publishers who think the time for cheap games is over and they should be doing away with deep sales and charging more.

I spent like $30 on the summer sale this year, but that was mostly to round out my Sega Genesis collection. For me, that's a lot to spend on a sale, but... well, I don't spend a ton of money anyways.

I actually ended up spending $10 this year:
Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics - $5
Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2 - $3
Portal 2 - $2

I was tempted to buy a few Total War games, but that's just too much money with all the DLCs right now.

I do, just not as much as before. Still better than every alternative.
Obviously better to use Steam during a sale than not during a sale.
Nobody is doing what they do. Or at least nobody who matters, Origin being the Bing/Windows Vista/New Coke/Tinkle of PC gaming.
Beats getting $60 New/$55 Used games at Gamestop or another game store... where depending on who you are, they'll "helpfully" ask if you're buying a game for your boyfriend/son/brother even if you remember the NES days......
You could try garage sales or other random people who might sell used games, might get a good deal there. If you're very lucky.

I think they realized that they didn't need to make their sales that good because they don't have any real competition to beat and seem to be well known now. I know my best chance of not paying full price for Civilization 6 is to wait for the next Summer Sale and determine if that's good enough, or if I should wait until the next Steam Summer Sale, there's no hope of getting the full game + all inevitable DLC for 20% the price anywhere else.

Also, most games are clones in some way, shape, or form...for years after Dune came out in 1992, RTS games were called Dune clones. :P
Then beginning in 1995, Command & Conquer and its sequels revolutionized the whole RTS genre.  Does that mean that all of the games that followed are C&C clones.  :D

Tacoma is a great game, especially if you're into visual novels or sci-fi. One of the great things about it is that you interact with objects to get pieces of the story while still not being involved in it, which makes the game feel especially immersive. Interesting, they're offering Tacoma DRM-free instead of the usual Steam key that expires in a week.

Also, the game was mentioned in Pengu's walking simulators review (only noticed since I was putting it into the Orendi yesterday lol).

Speaking of Pengu's review, The Witness, which he also discussed, will be free on the Epic Games Store from April 4 onward. Oxenfree is currently the free game they're offering.

I bought this game years ago on Steam, and it's UI is clunky and frustrating as hell...you can tell there that it's an aged game. But it's also an absolutely beautiful game to travel through. Games today try to make the world as realistic as possible, but there's something about the older graphics that's charming...like you're walking through a fantasy novel. Definitely recommend, at least to try out and to have. :)

Last I was here, there weren't very many Xbox gamers, but I'll put this here just in case. Today, Xbox announced the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. It's a subscription that basically bundles Xbox Live Gold and Xbox Game Pass into one. It includes Xbox Live, Game Pass, and Game Pass for PC (games you can play on Windows 10).

Right now, there is a deal for the first month of Ultimate Game Pass for $1, and right now it upgrades your current xbox live and game pass subscriptions to ultimate up to 36 months. So any current xbox live or game pass months left get upgraded to ultimate game pass, which is both in one. I'm guessing that this deal will only be available for the week of E3.

Let this sink in for a moment: this means that you can buy up to 36 months of Xbox Live, then for only $1 upgrade it to both xbox live and xbox game pass. That can save up to $360 of xbox game pass. For just $1. (And yes, I've tested this and it 100% works)

This is best for anyone who knows they're still going to use Xbox Live for the next 3 years. Even if you weren't planning on getting game pass, it's literally $1 for 3 years of game pass. Act on this quickly cause it'll probably last for only this week or less.

Note: it adds the months you have left from both xbox live and game pass. To quote Xbox, "if you have 3 months of Xbox Live Gold and 3 months of Xbox Game Pass already on your account when you purchase your first month of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, you will have a total of 7 months of Ultimate on your account before you need to renew your membership."

If any of this is unclear or you have questions, let me know. If you need evidence that I'm telling the truth, it's explained in the FAQ section at the bottom of this link (https://www.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-game-pass) (click show more).

TL;DR $360 of xbox game pass for $1. See above for details.
