Welcome to the first game of Mage War!

/me inserts some backstory about mage battles for control of the land that he didn't have time to write up

/me won't point out that this could really be converted to just about any theme

The game is pretty simple...each player who signed up has been assigned a square on a 30x30 grid. On every turn, which lasts a day, players will guess a square on the grid...if that's where another player's tower is, that player will be removed from the game. Actions will be taken based on the order players posted that turned, so if the first player to post their guess hit's the third player to post their guess, that third player's action will be cancelled and they will be removed from the game.

Obviously, the winner is the last person standing.

To help you, you should see an actual grid at the top of all pages of this topic! The blue spot is the location of your mage tower, and only you should be able to see it. Red squares are squares that have been hit in prior rounds. If you hover your mouse over a square, you'll see its coordinates, which should help you when guessing a square.

The only rules are that you can only make one guess a turn, and you should post your guess as [x-coord, y-coord] (for example, [1,3]). Again, hovering over a square in the grid will give you its coordinates.

Just to be sure... rules as written, you remain in the game if you target your own position, since only targeting another player does anything. Is this correct? Not sure if that's due to the possibility of two people having the same coordinates, or if I'm just the only one crazy enough to consider targeting my own position before anyone else can to make everyone think it's clear.

The first round of magic missiles have landed, and...hit nothing of importance. :( Ah well, at least you have 11 fewer tiles to guess...see what you can do with that? That means we're into Round 2, btw!

To answer some questions, the exact formatting doesn't really matter, as long as I know what's x and what's y. And it's definitely not a good idea to target your own square...your magic will obliterate you as well as anyone else's, and you probably wouldn't look very smart to your fellow magi to boot. :P

Another round, another series of misses...perhaps if @xXTheHydraXx had fired his magic missile we'd have a hit, but who knows really? :P

Well, 21 options eliminated, 879 to go!

Maybe next round we can get spells that let us destroy tiles in an x, +, or o centered around the coordinates we give?
I'm not sure how I'm going to develop the game further. I have some ideas, but they'll take some more coding...who knows what we'll see later?

Another round, another series of misses...we'll, you'll get there eventually. :P

It seems that two mages (North and Coco) didn't fire their spells off this round...this has created a huge load of pent-up mana in their towers, which will interact with nearby strikes to reveal their presence. In laymen's terms, this means that for the next turn, I will let you know if any strikes come within a tile of their locations.

Perhaps this will motivate them to relieve their mana pools!

Wow, four turns and nobody's been found out yet...didn't even get close to @North or @Coco Bandicoot to find out their bases. Guess I'll have to give you some help with a hint.

There's nobody on the edge of the map.

Since they were inactive again, you can continue to detect the general location of their bases if you strike within one tile of them (I will say that a particular strike came within a tile of their base if it happens).

It's not likely that anyone's near the corner, so I would probably change your choice to increase your chances of hitting someone's spot if I were you. (Although, I guess that advice is detrimental to me since I'm not you :P)

Another round of spells launch to their choose targets, and where before there was silence, there are now explosions and booms and bangs and things people go to movies to see, for some spells had actually hit something!

It was a nice try for Mathyland to try to persuade Aethelia into changing her target, but he soon learned of his failure when her spell ripped right through his tower, destroying the structure and taking him out of the game. Then Gerrick found and destroyed NyghtOwl's precious tower to boot! Lots of action this turn!

But can it be matched in the next?

This time it looks like @taulover and @xXTheHydraXx failed to cast a spell, so for the next round any strike that's one tile from them will alert everyone to their nearby presence.

My sneaky tactics of persuasion failed :(. Aethelia didn't even follow a pattern and filled in random spots near that corner. I was hoping to start a pattern of going diagonally when I said [4, 4] after she said [3, 3], but that didn't work.

Want to cast more spells too? Start blowing up some towers.

Sorry that I didn't get around to ending the round last night, I was working to beat a deadline for something for work. Not that anyone should've been holding their breaths, because nothing was hit in the last round. Oh well, good thing we can keep going even after the end of the festival. :P

Monsters have spawned.
It seems that all the spells and mana being thrown around have attracted some of the nearby creatures. Running across them will give you some benefit, like so:

Blue Basilisk
Having turned blue from all the mana it's absorbed from the area, killing a blue basilisk will temporarily increase your own mana reserves, allowing you to choose one additional target for the next five turns. This effect stacks when multiple basilisks are killed.

Red Revenant
These spirits glow red with malevolence, which you can collect to gain a shield buff. When a player is struck with this buff, the shield will not only absorb the impact, but will also obscure the attack, meaning that everyone will be informed that a player was struck that round, but not which player or tile. Tiles targeted during that round (except other successful hits against players) will be obscured and show as grey, meaning that there may or may not be a tower at that tile, and that the tile will need to be targeted again to know.

This effect does not stack, but killing a second Red Ravenant while you have the buff will grant you the additional ability to move your tower to a random tile that has not been targeted upon being struck, meaning your tower wouldn't actually be in any of the obscured tiles. How sneaky is that?

Currently, 7 Blue Basilisks and 3 Red Revenants are on the board, and any creatures that are killed will respawn every 10 turns (10, 20, 30, etc.).

Oh yeah, all your hits were misses last round too. Welcome to round 10.

Welcome to round 16, pretty much the same.

It's Friday, the game hasn't been going so hot lately, so I added something new to accelerate the game.

Artifact: Scrying Stone
Even the stones in the area have absorbed a good deal of mana, meaning that finding one can buff your spells. Upon finding one, tiles to the north, south, east, and west of your targets for the next five turns will be revealed. In the event this buff reveals another player, they will not be eliminated and will need to be re-targeted during the next turn. This effect will not stack, but having two in effect for a turn will also reveal diagonal tiles.

There are five Scrying Stones on the board. I also added three additional Blue Basilisks and two additional Rage Revenants, meaning there are now 20 creatures and artifacts plus 9 remaining players to discover.

In my eternal struggle to help you guys hit something (cause you haven't in awhile), I have added some new items to the board:

Scroll of Summon Scorpion - Scroll
Summons a scorpion to a location defined by the player which lasts for ten turns. The initial cast takes up one attack, but afterwards the player can move the scorpion to any surrounding tile in addition to their normal number of attacks. Once cast, the scroll is removed from the player.

The Starcaller - Artifact
Calls a comet from the skies to clear a random 3x3 (or 2x2 if there are no available 3x3 areas) square which has no players within it. If there are any monsters, artifacts, or spells in the grid, the player will collect them and receive their benefits. Can be used multiple times, but has a 10-turn cooldown.

Welcome back, @Aethelia. :)

While most people struck nothing of importance, Pengu's shot uncovered something shiny...on further investigation, it turned out to be a Starcaller, which was recovered and is now on display in his tower in all its glowy artifact glory. In future turns, Pengu can now use either his normal, targeted attack or use the Starcaller when it is off cooldown (please specify which you're using when posting from this point forward).

I turned out to be pretty busy yesterday, so I hope you guys enjoyed your day off the game! Aethelia is certainly putting her Blue Basilisk buff to good use, since one of her shots uncovered a Scroll of Summon Scorpion at 18,27. Funny how these blasts can obliterate mage towers, but leave paper harmless. In any case, it seems she's advancing in the game and everyone else...well, isn't. Anyone else getting worried yet?

I'm just picking edges knowing that, and feeling bad for having more choices but not wanting to do something silly like only doing every other turn since it might cause a delay in waiting for me if I tried that.

Wow, four turns and nobody's been found out yet...didn't even get close to @North or @Coco Bandicoot to find out their bases. Guess I'll have to give you some help with a hint.

Unless Wintermoot was being a lying liar who lies (and I doubt that), we know for fact that there is nobody there. No doubting required. Aethelia, you have had really swell luck thus far, and given the kerfuffle around the Arena Game (though you won) there is no reason you should sabotage yourself. Please don't.

Now, if Wintermoot hadn't said nobody was on the edges, I would be thinking "Huh, I wonder why Aethelia commented on the likelihood of edges. Could it be that she's on the edge?" =P Still, if anyone is along the 30s, they're safe from me. And even if no people are on the edges, various buffs might be sitting around in there.

Thank you for quoting that... I was not aware of that hint. It didn't seem particularly necessary to read every post, so I've skimmed the ones that weren't turn updates, and that appears to have been an error. I only said the edge thing because I thought it would be interesting to see if anyone would be more or less likely to pick the edges if I said that.

Maybe the edges should just all be red then. Unless that's where all the extra bonuses are, since that wasn't ruled out. Still maybe for now I'll just edit a coordinates post this one time, I don't think I'm going to edge crawl that scorpion after all...

Could work. I can't be the only one who has thought of entering all the choices into an excel spreadsheet, noting that there are at least 2 participants consistently aiming away from certain areas. Not that I'm doing that, I have no idea how to do such an analysis in Excel, just have thought of it as a hypothetical option.

Actually, the first was correct: if you read what's next to 1 target/turn, and then look at what turn we're on, that's what I was referring to: The fact that I can use Starcaller again soon.  :P

Could work. I can't be the only one who has thought of entering all the choices into an excel spreadsheet, noting that there are at least 2 participants consistently aiming away from certain areas. Not that I'm doing that, I have no idea how to do such an analysis in Excel, just have thought of it as a hypothetical option.
And this is the other reason I have been randomly rolling, and openly told you all that I was randomly rolling. The Lord RNG wins again!!!

That wasn't the plan... the most unpredictable should have been the last to have been found... sorry about that, blame those targeting the main diagonal, I guessed that turn that those doing so were trying to get everyone else to not target the diagonal lines closest to the top-left to bottom-right diagonal. Thought you deserved the truth about why I picked two spaces where the x coordinate and y coordinate were different by one, it was to get them. Oops. It looks like Hydra is correct. I'm not sure why the hit didn't register last turn, but it should have...therefore he is eliminated from the game and Blue Mones, who launched the successful attack, will get an additional attack this turn to compensate for the one he didn't get last turn. Otherwise, Aethelia got her own Blue Basilisk buff at 9,3 to match Gerrick's, so for now they're both tied at four attacks a turn.

It is weird sometimes to click this topic and think, oh, this started in August? ... what was I even doing in August? I don't remember, that was forever ago.

Maybe I should have done the math on this earlier, because my estimate would have been that it would take around 74 turns to end this ((900 - (900/11)) / 11 = ~74, just a guess, I'm sure a more mathy person has a better equation), with only the rule that you absorb someone else's shot, and without the no edges hint or random powerups. Over two months even if every turn was 24 hours.

Still interested myself though, even though I forget even asking to join.

Sorry for the long wait, but we're back now! And...nothing happened. :P

One thing about Pengu's Starcaller call, the description says that it will randomly choose a 3x3 open target unless one doesn't exist, then it will choose a 2x2 open target. However, it doesn't specify what it will do if there isn't a 2x2 square available. In the end, I picked a random open coordinate (23,34) which would form the top-left tile of a 2x2 square. Unfortunately for Pengu, the other tiles in that square had already been targeted, so the Starcaller this turn only picked up the one tile. This is obviously a mechanic that will need more work before the next game.

No, or at least if I did I made an error and didn't intend to do it, though once or twice the position of the scorpion in the post wasn't updated even though the map was, and instead of pointing it out I just used the position I knew the scorpion was at to move it perpendicular to how I moved it previously, so it may have looked that way.

I hope only one was picked up, there's a very distinct advantage to getting to move to a random square AFTER the reveal that no edges were blue, since it could now be on an edge while the rest of us still aren't, right? Guess I'll give a repeat order and if that doesn't work, might have to GG to Gerrick for real this time.

Don't we know now that that happened? Since we checked all the squares from the previous turn.
Since one Rage Revenant is effectively "survive one more turn" and is far less useful in practice than having two and possibly moving to squares that nobody else could be on.

I guess so... okay then...
I mean I can't really argue with the appeal of a sudden underdog win, those make for good stories, and I think for the first time I'm the underdog in this...

I suppose strategically, if the last blue square I can't see can be anywhere, and mine is not on the edge, my best hope is to try the edge rather than ruling out squares for Gerrick even faster, and hoping that works.
Other than with the scorpion, because I don't want the scorpion to feel useless. I know that feeling. Don't like it. But I can talk a lot about that more another time.

I didn't really think that scorpion through. Guess it can just stay there. Also it's hard to find a specific red square in a sea of red squares. No lines between them.

I should have made my December 15 post shorter. Gerrick liked it and I don't know what that means. Probably something innocent, like the part where I said I'd try anyway. I should have only said one thing so it would be more clear.
But it reminded me that I considered early on using post likes to make it seem like I was either trying to say something, or giving something away by accident. Like making someone think "Why did Aethelia like two posts targeting the same area? Am I close? Or is it a trick?"
But then I realized it was unlikely to work, after already being unlikely to be noticed at all. Not like subtle hints ever seem to work in real life for anything I do.

Aw, that there's a post means I got it wrong.

Not that this would be relevant until it came down to two, but I wonder if anyone would try to cheat by intentionally going first, seeing if the other person posted normally, and then tried to edit their post with completely new coordinates on the assumption that the first coordinates were wrong. And if they got away with that strategy, if player two could act cool about it to get player one to switch away from winning to not winning.
Not going to do that though. I'm glad there aren't any obvious typos in my post earlier so I don't have to edit it for that reason and look guilty. I like to edit my major typos when I catch them, hate having imperfections, things that are wrong must be corrected.

It's just something I look for. I don't try to cheat or take advantage of people, but I've had that happen to me a lot in life, so I'm always thinking of ways it might be done so I look for when others do it.
Apparently I can't turn that off even though I don't know of anyone here who would do that.

Really though let's end this soon, I don't know if I should stay in Wintreath much longer but I feel obligated to not abandon this Mage War thing I joined long ago. Things that are started must be completed.

After 75 rounds and 5 months, Gerrick discovered Aethelia's tower at 8,8 and blew it to smithereens, winning the game. Congrats to Gerrick. :D

Whew, that was way too close for comfort. And after my teleportation, we ended up being only 2 tiles away. :o

I didn't even know you guys were so close until the end, lol. When Gerrick moved I gave him a tile determined by random generator and didn't even check if he was close to anyone.

I'm glad that you guys enjoyed the game! Any closing thoughts or opinions?

Maybe just have the gameboard be a liiiiittle bit smaller next time? :P

But really, it was fun. I'll definitely play when we have another game.
