Everybody's favorite treacherous trans woman is back in the headlines.

Chelsea Manning, the former Army private convicted of sharing classified government documents with Wikileaks, has filed to run for the U.S. Senate in Maryland.

Manning, 30, plans to run as a Democrat, according to federal election filings first reported by The Washington Post Saturday.

The whistleblower and transgender activist was released from prison in May 2017 after serving seven years. President Barack Obama commuted her sentence in January 2017.

During her time in prison, Manning became a symbol of transgender rights when the LGBTQ community rallied around her after she went on a hunger strike to protest officials who denied her request for gender confirmation treatment. Manning, who was assigned male at birth and transitioned during her imprisonment, ended her strike after the Army complied with her request.

“Like far too many people in prison, particularly transgender women, Chelsea Manning has had to survive unthinkable violence throughout the seven years of her incarceration,” Chase Strangio, staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union, said in a statement following her release from prison. “Finally, she will be leaving prison and building a life beyond the physical walls of the many sites of her detention. It is a remarkable gift to the world that Chelsea will be able to grow and fight alongside us for justice.”

Manning would be running against Democrat Ben Cardin, who has served two terms in the Senate.

Is a convicted traitor to the US government? Transgender? A radical leftist? Who wouldn't vote for her? I'm no joking have never loved a candidacy more in my life. I want her to get elected, not because I think she'll "change the system" (I don't even think she thinks that) but because seeing a trans woman who was at one point tortured by the US government and is now a stone cold socialist butt heads with the technocrats and bigots who run Washington DC would be legendary comedy.

A progressive and a whistle-blower? And possibly the first transgender member of Congress to boot? Looking forward to this.

A primary against a two-term incumbent should prove to be difficult, though. Hopefully her name recognition will draw in lots of attention and support to overcome. Good luck to her.

Not to rain on the parade, but her odds of winning are pretty low...running against an incumbent in a relatively moderate state. Plus I'm not sure she's ever held political office before...I'm curious why she didn't run for the state legislature or for the House. Seems like she's going after an unnecessarily tough fight for herself.

Any Chelsea manning candidacy wouldn't be a serious candidacy. But seen since Chelsea Manning is pretty far-left on the political spectrum, I doubt she's taking herself that seriously either.

I think if she did it right she could win some office though...she's got a lot of name recognition, she'd certainly have the support of the LGBTQ community, and there are lots of people that thinks she's a hero for releasing the information that she did. And the people who think she's a traitor...most of them would never vote for a Democrat anyways, so that doesn't have to be considered.

I sincerely doubt she will win. Then again, I said the same think about another political candidate not to long ago and eat a whole lot of humble pie.
