  • Meet me in outer space
    We could spend the night
    Watch the earth come up
I've grown tired of that place
    Won't you come with me?

This topic is about everything Stellaris, an excellent game that I recently started playing and have quickly become addicted to! Has anyone else played? What are your thoughts about the game? Maybe in time we could even try a multiplayer game. :)

  • I have it installed and got two seconds into the tutorial before real life interrupted. It looked fantastic though -- if overwhelming.

  • I had a blast with it when Utopia came out and before the Adams update. My only problem was whenever I ran Psionic Ascension, raising up other pops to full Psionics would make them the founder pop.
Which was thoroughly unacceptable in my xenophobic/religious/authoritarian Imperium of Man, where these pops were only tolerated as slave labor.
I tried to refrain from outright xenocide though, mostly because it would make expansion in the form of vassalization/integration somewhat harder because neighboring empires would hate me. I just deported any undesirables.

Which was much more annoying than when I did just go the straight xenocide route as Genetic Ascension Fanatic Purifiers. Side note: all of those pops were delicious after a good round of gene therapy.

But I haven't actually tried anything in the Adams update. Mostly because I'm scared of the Happiness nerfs, and not getting access to all the Enigmatic techs anymore. It was so nice to be able to reliably outclass enemy ships, pound-for-pound, in every area in endgame.
OTOH the other changes in the changelog seem good for the most part (because they're buffs, and by god do I love buffs).
Not to mention that it's always annoyed me that I can make the newer colonies Gaia worlds (obviously before actually colonizing them), but the older ones had to stay generically shitty. Now I can terraform colonized worlds!
    Life is amazing.

  • I've never actually gotten far into Stellaris (I always enjoyed colonizing far more then warmongering) but I've owned it since day one and I've had a blast with it, like all titles Paradox puts out. Its improved immensely since it got first put out! I remember when the only legitimate route was collectivist materialists( In MP where everyone wants to min max to win anyway), enslaving left and right with no consequence. These days the game feels a lot more balanced in the right places while still maintaining some of the unevenness that makes it fun. I can play my spiritual pacifists and still have the chance to win in MP :P I haven't played much of the recent update though, mostly because my traditions UI is bugged and I'm too lazy to figure out how to fix it!

Stellaris is great! I only recently acquired it and have so far been playing on a tiny galaxy with only three other major races as I'm learning the game with my Militarist Fanatic Materialist Adeptus Mechanicus led by Archmagos Belisarius Cawl. So far I am the most advanced in all forms of technology and navy strength.

My only wish is to get the steam version so that I can download mods to get some of the beautiful upgrades so that I can actually build Forge Worlds and unleash the full might of the Mechanics on its enemies.

(Cuz there are no updated mods for cracked versions) which I only have because I wanted to get a feel for the game before buying it. I can now proudly say I really want this game!

Anyone play the Horizon Signal mechanic yet in the game? It is glorious, just don't embrace the research, kill them but keep the notes. Don't embrace it and don't destroy it. Because WHAT WAS SHALL BE, WHAT SHALL BE WAS! THE WORM-IN-WAITING IS WATCHING US!

    End of Time

I remember there in the dawn,
When the suns rose and rose,
    That never could I know,
A sight more grand than this.

Now I sit here in the dusk,
While the suns die and die,
That never will I see a sight more sad,
    Or a sight more beautiful.

Actually what pleases me about the game is that they've really streamlined the gameplay and removed a lot of the tedious aspects of a space-based strategy game. If you have a chance to try it again, the tutorial is a pretty good guide to most of the game. The only thing in my meager experience I'd suggest beyond that is to start other colonies earlier than the tutorial has you do it, cause if you wait too long other empires will colonize all the open planets.

In any case, one thing I'm really liking is the research mechanic, where research options are given semi-randomly instead of through a tech tree...it makes each game different, and you can't necessarily rush to a specific tech like you can in Civ. I've played three games so far, and some tech I was offered early in one game wasn't offered until much later in another...

At this point I have the basics down I think, but diplomacy and strategic combat get tricky...I'm sure having 30 AI empires doesn't help, but I'm not entirely sure how to utilize fleets and armies in the best way...it's one of those things I'll learn over time though I'm sure. :)

  • You know, so many of us own Stellaris, its a wonder we haven't organized a game! Stellaris has surprisingly good MP, as in, even my potato internet can run it at full speed in large games. Its amazingly optimized for a Paradox title!

  • I'd gladly put a game together but with what I'm running that's just not legal. Once I acquire the steam version I will let y'all know and submit a few Ideas for times.

I love Stellaris, and I should really be giving it some more time. Utopia was a great expansion and greatly increased the content of the game. If a game does end up getting organised, I prolly might join in.
