  • So I stumbled onto this weird opinion article yesterday and thought it was pretty interesting:

  • Eh, as far as looking for blame I think the idea of blaming baby boomers is a bit out there.

I believe most of the issues the article raises can be explained by the decline of civics education, as I've mentioned a few times elsewhere...traditionally, the purpose of the American education system was to promote good Citizenship as a bulwark against those who wanted power at the expense of Citizens' best interests. However, at some point it was decided that we needed to focus on other areas in education so our kids wouldn't 'fall behind' kids in other countries in math or science.

So now we have generations of Citizens who are clueless about their government or their responsibilities as Citizens, who look no further in politics than who says the stuff I like most, and doesn't believe they should have to contribute to the things that keeps the nation and society running. People complain about potholes in one breath, and in the next decry the idea of raising taxes to fix them. And don't even think about investing in the next generation in the form of free or even just debt-free college, that's too 'socialist' for the so-called greatest country on Earth (just not in education, or freedoms, or anything besides largest military and most people in jail).

Partially because of that, but also because of a lack of critical thinking skills and an Internet where you can find groups and 'news' that reinforce any ideology, we've become a nation of people who see what they believe, not the other way around. Is it any wonder that the political parties would eventually take advantage of that? To pander to what people believe to get themselves elected? Is it any wonder that a large portion of Americans believe any number of things that are provably wrong?

That's not a problem that can be pinned on any one generation. It's also not a problem that's going away anytime soon. That's what should really make people fear for the future.
