American achieved a level of prosperity under Clinton that we haven't seen since and likely won't see for a long time. The budget was balanced, we were paying down the national debt, unemployment was low, and wages were going up. I don't agree with some of his centralist politics, but given the politics of the time it's understandable...he represented a brand of Democrats that felt they needed to act like Republicans on social issues to get elected. Hopefully the failure of his wife to win election will finally put that theory to rest, but I still believe he's the best president we've had since Kennedy.
Under Obama, the economy has generated jobs on a monthly basis for most of his presidency, he advanced affordable healthcare for all, as flawed as the actual implementation of it was, and he was a stalwart support of the rights of minorities, especially for the LGBTQ+ community. Even more amazing, he accomplished this in spite of Republicans promising to undermine anything he wanted to do before he even took office...including in some cases legislation they previously supported. Perhaps just as importantly, if you had read taulover's article, he articulated a trust and a vision that resonated with America, including white America, which is probably why he was elected twice. Being one of the most gifted orators of our generation probably helped too.
Now lets look at Trump...instead of 'draining the swamp' as he promised during the campaign, he's hired them into his government. His Cabinet is composed of millionaires and billionaires...richer than the bottom third of American households combined. His tax plan calls for a massive tax cut for the rich, similar to the Bush tax cuts that did nothing except explode the national debt. His solution to Carrier exporting jobs to Mexico was to allow them to still export some jobs while giving them over $7 million in corporate welfare...money that no doubt the taxpayers of Indiana will have to cover. He still supports a registry of Muslim-Americans, reminiscent of the Nazi-era requirements for Jews to 'self-identify', and likewise his judicial picks are very likely to curtail freedoms and liberties for minorities while affirming the role of big business and big government. And that's not even speaking of him as a person...someone whose petty narcissism and authoritarianism would make him more in-place as the generalissimo of a banana republic than as the leader of the free world.
But hey, at least it won't be the status quo Clinton would have offered, right?
